Star Trek: The Motion Picture--Appreciation Thread

I can see Vader a little...but it's stretching it. And I don't see piggy at all.

This was the cover art they say it was taken from:

Can someone repost this pic? All I see is a red X.

This movie forgets its audience is human.

The only thing I really appreciated was when the ending finally came.

I have that 'directors edition' dvd and i love that they were able to go back and 'fix' the fx shots they couldn't do before the release date. for example in the theater release when kirk, mccoy and spock meet up in kirk's quarters after spock fixed the warp drive you see a wall with a darker rectangular area. in the DE dvd they removed that and in it's place you see a window looking out at the warp engines of the ship. the dvd producers made a CGI version of the TMP Enterprise and put 'virtual' cameras inside the model that would film if they had a real camera looking out at a real part of the ship from that angle.
:wow:

Here is a CGI picture of the TMP Enterprise, this is what they used in the DE version of the movie in certain shots.

My bro reads the Shatner Star Trek books so apparently Voyager is like the beginnings of the borg or something of that nature... Anyway I haven't seen the movie in a while, I remember likign it, thinking it was slow as hell but really digging the end scene with the satelite and what not. My bro owns all the films, I think I have 2, 6, and 8 at my dorm... I should watch KHANNNN tonight, but i'll probably watch First Contact beccause that's my favorite.

You know what was great about this movie? The cast weren't a bunch of old and fat people. It got depressing after a while. Like Roger Moore as Bond in the `80s depressing. Here they looked alright:

It's incredible to think that this and the new one are the ONLY Star Trek movies where these character's aren't portrayed as old people. :wow:

Eh...outside of Shatner and Doohan, I personally don't see where any of the others gained an unusual amount of poundage between 1979 and 1991. In fact, given how some people do tend to fill out as they get older, I'd say Nimoy, Takei, Nichols, and Koenig held on fairly well for their age, and heck, Kelley himself thinned out.

I rather liked the idea of the characters' age becoming more apparent, especially in II and VI where it was actually sort of integral to those stories - I mean, yeah, once Kirk & Co. start looking like they qualify for Liberty Medical and the Scooter Store, they might want to consider hanging up their phasers, but at least the producers weren't jumping the "young and virile swashbuckler-type" bandwagon that had the custodians of every other sci-fi franchise of the '80s scrambling to find the next Mark Hamill or Harrison Ford.

As for ST:TMP itself, I have to agree that the movie probably might have been more tolerable if they'd chopped 30 to 45 minutes out of it initially...and if they'd had the nifty red jackets from the get-go instead of those pajamas. :woot:

True, but Doohan seemed to have gained weight for everyone. :cwink:

I like that as well but it would have been nice to see more than one (two counting the new one) movie where they are young. They being old limits what they can do. I was watching the ending of Generations today on HBO Family and it was ridiculous how Shatner's fight scenes were shot tight and wide to hide the fact that he's old and fat and that a stunt double was used for the wide shots.

I think tdc of tmp is an improvement over the theatrical cut.it fixes some of the pacing issues. Anyone see the recent Family Guy with TNG whenthey go to the trek convention some of the audience is wearing TMP uniforms but there colored red & black and they looked so much better. I wonder if that would have worked in live action?

Yeah...at least there's no 10 minute montage of the Enterprise in the new movie.

When I first saw the movie, I actually didn't mind that. I wanted to see the new ship that bad. I thought it was beautiful, and I still love that design the best.

Actually, Kirk's reunion with the Enterprise is IMO the best scene in the entire film.

I saw this movie when I was like, 10. It was boring so I don't remember anything about it, except that there were living machines in it somewhere.

Check it out again before the new movie.

I'm one of the few people who think that the first Star Trek film is the best. I'm a big fan of the original Star Trek series from the `60s because of its commentary on society and its hopes and messages for the future. The film series, however, I've never been a fan of because it lacked what I loved about the series. The exception being the first film, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Many think the film is boring. I think it's a great film because of its exploration of space, knowledge, love, and existance itself. I don't want to insult anyone, but I think most people don't get the point of the film.

I agree with you 10000000000000000000%, I don't get all the hatred toward the movie, one of the best. I kind of didn't like the director's cut revealing Viger being a mere super advanced star ship, I always envisioned Viger being a mix of sub atomical tech(much smaller than nano tech, technology beyond our understanding) cloud infused with the inner core and not having a specific shape. On the other hand I find Wrath of Khan a very tedious movie, I always change the channel when I come across it, talking about an over rated movie.

I need to re-watch both versions. I honestly don't remember all the differences.
