Thanos is my favourite comic book villain. He's just awesome.

Heavyweight powerhouse who literally pimp slaps the likes of Hulk aside. Has shrugged off the best a Warrior Madness/Power Gem wielding Thor can throw at him.

Heavyweight genius who makes Reed Richards and Dr Doom seem like the class dunces.

He's got some great one liners and monologues too. And there isn't many villains who can have just plain old curiosity as a motivation for doing something terrible (Annihilation).

^ man morning I couldn't have said it better! Thanos is ###1 baddie in all of comics!!He even beats joker cause like morning said he can meet you on all levels. He has duked it out with Thor and Hulk physically and used cunning and guile to wrestle the infinity gems way from the elders of the universe.( man! You always have to hold onto your gems!!)That a bad dude!... and let's face it.we have all did some stupid or crazy$%%^( at one time or another trying to impress some chick( even she is a skeleton) that's real life. Modus operandi there baby! I will always dig the mad titan!

Probably the most terrifying of Marvel's villains. Nothing worth gathering up all of your heroes to fight like an all-powerful space god who doesn't give 1/10th of a **** about anything.

LOVE Thanos! One of the few villains who when he shows up I feel an 'oh s***' just waiting to be voiced. He may not be my all-time favorite MU villain, but he's pretty dang close and has been a pretty consistent menace for everybody for as long as I can remember. One of the villian cornerstones for Marvel, IMO.

Would be nice too if the characters listed so far also hyperlinked to each relevant post where the character is listed so that you don't have to scroll through an entire thread to find an entry on someone.

Going back to three characters mentioned so far, I'd like to see a team of faux Avengers using US Agent, War Machine and Beta Ray Bill. They could be awesome as they're all more hard lined versions of the originals.

Thanos ties with Doc Doom as my favorite villain of all time! He's a bad mutha trucka.

infinity Gauntlet is one of the greatest minis ever imo.

Corsair & Starjammers - not that bothered, I agree that X-Men don't 'belong' in space but I enjoyed Starjammers first appearance stuff.

Skrulls - who couldn't love those sexy chins? I like how devious they are as a race and Super Skrull is awesome on every level.

Odin - haven't actually read too much with him in as I don't read Thor.

Mephisto - cool villain, I agree with earlier comment that he is very Loki-esque. I like how writers don't make him too serious as he doesn't really need to be - there's plenty of other heavyweight villains for that.

Thanos - total badass.

Thanos is all right, but he gets on my nerves when Starlin gets all Gary Stu with him and has him own Kirby's characters. He's a Darkseid rip-off, and of course Mongul is a rip off of him, which makes Mongul a rip-off of a rip-off.

But he does look awesome and menacing and I do like him okay.

Yeah, he's a poor Man's Darkseid with the benefit of years of Starlin fan *******.

Yeah he is pretty much a complete darkseid rip, that said he actually has a better back story than darkseid.

One of the few things I liked about the Universe/Earth X thing was how thanos was resolved and how he actually killed death and such. That was a very interesting take on him.

 

[The Question]

I've never understood how Thanos can be considered a Darkseid rip-off. Darkseid is a cool, reserved, calculating overlord with no loyalty to anyone or anything but himself who generally prefers to leave the fighting to others. Thanos is a passionat, fanatical zealot who worships and has a disturbed romantic and sexual infatuation with Death, works mostly by himself (often conning or manipulating people into working for him, but rarely does he have any form of minions), and generally fights people head on.

They look similar, and their dialogue is often written very similarly, but in all the ways they count they're as different as night and day.

You guys!leave it to the egyptian god of death to rain on my thanos parade( you arejust sore cause he wants your sister death!) Hehe. He might have started off as a seid rip but that dude got wayyyy better! That %^& he was talking after cap died in "the death of capn marvel" was shakespearian or at least better than. JK rowling's stuff! Like beta ray he might ve started off as a rip but became somthing else! He's the titan baby!

I get the darkseid rip off, but here's the deal.

They are both villians, cosmic, look somewhat similar and have a lot of other random things in common (death v anti life, eternals/new gods)

but really darkseid was not even that lucrative a villian to copy, and many of Kirby's own creations are often copied or even formulaic within themselves.

If anything Starlin was heavily influenced by Kirby on Thanos, but i think thats the safest thing to say.

I think Thanos has turned out to be much more complex and interesting than Darkseid, who in his own right is a great villian.
