Kids today are also afraid of their tech startup ideas falling through. Pennywise can manifest himself as a future venture capitalist who rejects their business plan.

Pennywise is gonna manifest as a student loan debt collector

"We all float down here....in poverty."

In 2016 they defeat Pennywise by opening up a farmer's market in the sewer, gentrifying things and running him out of town. Even an interdimensional demon clown can't afford rent down there.

'IT's overseas performance is fantastic so far. 'IT' managed 66.3 million on OW and delivered 26 million in the 4 weekdays. Which means the weekdays accounts to 39.2% of the OW. Even when 'IT' displayed the best ever weekday numbers for a Sept/Fall release, best ever weekday numbers for a horror movie in the domestic market, the OS markets were still able to out-muscle the domestic figures in terms of percentage gross w.r.t OW (39.2%>>27.6%).

This weekend 'IT' collected 60.3 million. 'IT' added 10 markets with Mexico bringing in a monster OW of 13.8 million. That actually beat UK (13.2 million) to be the 2nd best OW in a single territory for 'IT'. The drop in the OS holdover markets is a phenomenal 37%. That is truly mind-boggling for an R rated Horror movie with expected front-loading. This movie has broken all kinds of previous Horror OW records in (US+Canada), Europe & Latin America. 'IT' is truly astonishing. :D :D

So you get the contrast between what looks fake, and what looks real. You can't really do that with any of the 80's movie monsters because the makeup looked pretty good, and still mostly holds up. You can cast anyone as the werewolf, or mummy, or Dracula, but you can't do that with Freddy, or Jason, or Chuckie.

Heh, this made me smile because you can cast anyone as a werewolf or Dracula, but you ain't going to get Lon Chaney Jr. or Bela Lugosi from most folks. Jason and Michael Myers are much more bland and can be played by anyone abnormally tall. But that is a whole other discussion. ;)

I have a question, do we categorize movies like 'I am Legend', 'Jaws', 'World War Z', 'Hannibal' as Horror movies through and through?? Or is there other ways to classify them when it comes to genre identification??

First three are horrors. Hannibal is psycho thriller.

Just quoting so it's easier to know what I'm referring to...

Personally, I think you could classify all of those as "Psychological Thrillers" as well. Jaws being a perfect example. The fear of not seeing the shark has psychological effects on the audience. Even though "Bruce" the shark was having malfunctions on set, in hindsight...it was the perfect shortcoming. If it hadn't, we'd never get those iconic first person shark scenes.

I think a lot of people nowadays associate horror with "blood & guts". Horror couldn't be further from that. There is a famous quote that I love in regards to horror. It's by Douglas E. Winter and it states...

Horror is not a genre, like the mystery or science fiction or the western. It is not a kind of fiction, meant to be confined to the ghetto of a special shelf in libraries or bookstores. Horror is an emotion.

If you take that into account, 'IT' can very well be classified as a horror film.

Saw this last night and enjoyed it overall. Some truly terrifying moments and I really enjoyed Skaarsgard's performance as Pennywise. I could've used more of that. Him talking to Georgie at the beginning was the perfect way to start this movie. However, something about it felt choppy to me - not sure if it was the editing or the directing but I want to see if I'd feel this way on a rewatch.

I also kind of lost interest in the third act. I didn't know anything about this story before last night so finding out that It is an inter-dimensional space monster that crash landed on earth 65 million years ago just makes me think I'd never particularly care for this story.

Saw again for a second time, my theater sold out. Went with a group of 10 people this time, and one of them walked out looking like they were going to faint. She cried about 4 times during the movie. I felt a little bad inviting her.

The 80's is truly the best era.

The '60s and '70s are a whole lot of crazy too (and with better music). But to grow up (and not get drafted)? Yeah, the '80s (and '90s) are pretty great time periods to mine.

Hey man! You leave 80's music out of this. It has its own sense of...charm...yeah...charm. Is it all good? Of course not! But an era that gave us "Take On Me" simply can't be all bad! :D :p

So we beat him based on an episode of South Park?! That IS brave.

Well, Freddy Kruger appears to feature in Spielberg's upcoming family film 'Ready Player One', and I don't see anyone complaining that it will take audiences out of the movie.

I just thought the addition of Kruger would have been a nice nod to the type of stuff that used to scare kids during that era (in the same way the Universal Monsters scared kids during Steven King's formative years). I wouldn't have wanted it to come across as a cheesy self-referential gag, but as something that would have authentically represent the types of pop culture monsters that were scaring 80s/90s kids.

That's because Ready Player One is nothing but a media mashup. That's its entire reason for being. It has nothing else going on.

Have you read the book by chance? I'm considering grabbing it from the library since I don't have anything else to read right now.

It's a fun read. At its core it's a fairly straightforward mystery "race to find the hidden treasure" tale, with a huge dose of nostalgia. It's a fun world, and a quick read.

If you're looking for a more in-depth examination of what virtual reality/gaming culture might evolve into in terms of the effects on humanity, I would check Otherland by Tad Williams. That's a series, and predates RP1 by nearly twenty years. It's a fairly slow start, but once you get into it, it really delves into some interesting ideas on how a virtual reality technology could impact us as a species.

RP1 doesn't really do that, except in the broadest terms, but that's okay. Getting mad at RP1 for not looking into these issues deeper is kind of like being mad that Indiana Jones doesn't examine the horrors of the Nazi's in the same way Shinler's List does. They're just two completely different stories. RP1 is a fun action adventure, and it's a solid one at that.

Yeah, I'll prob go for RP1. I'm looking for a quick little...almost like a beach read. I might hit the other after, but I just finished something kinda deep, so something easy and entertaining sounds kinda nice.

Can't lie, I've blasted "Total Eclipse of the Heart" more than I'd care to admit in the last month after the solar eclipse. It's okay if you know the song is awful right? :sly:

Next weekend there will be two major release in American Assassin and mother!. According to some long range forecasts, AA will open to 14.5 million and mother will open to 11.2 million. I think mother! will open higher. The trailers, TV spots, reviews are going to help the movie to a slightly bigger opening (13 million) while AA is pretty much where it's being projected right nao. So the combined OW of these 2 will be 27.5 million. OTOH, 'IT' will have a softer drop in it's sophomore weekend what with the OW being deflated due to Hurricane Irma and NFL games. So a 2nd weekend drop of (50-53)% looks likely atm. So 'IT's 2nd weekend could be (55.4-57.9) million. 'IT's 2nd weekend is likely gonna be more than double the combined OW of the new openers.

So, mother! most likely won't be a competition for IT.

Yeah...IT royally whipped their asses. It brought in something around 60 mil? That's super impressive for a second weekend.

Really interesting read with the editor.

Original length of the film was 3 and 1/2 hours. A lot of Henry's backstory was cut due to pacing issues.

Talks about the original ending with
Henry(alive) draining out of the sewer with the dead bodies.

In terms of being stuck in an MMO, Sword Art Online is my favorite :D

I honestly don't think
Henry's dead.
Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I don't think so. My fiancee and I were discussing the changes made, and truthfully, there was only one that we felt was truly unnecessary.
I don't get why the felt the need to change the big end weapon from Bev's slingshot to the bolt gun. It actually kinda removed a pretty big thing from Bev's, and you know, since feminism seems to be such a big deal in movies these days, IDK why they took that moment away from Bev's.
All the other changes I was completely ok with, or feel like they were actual improvements.
