Sci-Fi Stranger Things (Netflix) - Part 1

Billy was supposed to have a bigger role but they moved his and the other older teen characters storyline to season 3.

Good to know.
How did that scientist guy avoid the blame (the one who was eating with Hopper later) after the labs were exposed by the tape. It was his voice on the tape wasn't it?

Season one, episode five now and still wonderful! :D

When the chief sliced open fake Will's body and pulled out fluff! Yikes! :p

The whole first season is great from start to finish.

I was impressed with all the actors. Winona Ryder was really convincing.

Because what he did was not technically illegal. He was sent there by the government to clean up the mess and contain the gate. But Nancy and Jonathan exposed the building with a watered down story, and they most likely had to shut down the building due to public outcry. I don't think any official charges were placed, just that the place got shut down.

Oh right, gotya. Makes sense, thanks.

Might have been hard going back to work there anyway lol.

So is
Dart actually a potentially ok pet or just as bloodthirsty as his brothers?
:woot:

I think the implication is that he was somewhat friendly with Dustin, but only somewhat. He was still a violent animal and would've probably still hurt Dustin if he didn't have Three Musketeers on him as bait.

Regarding Dart and the demodogs/demogorgons, the theory around reddit is that
if the show stays true to the D&D analogies, then they are just one of possibly many races the Mind Flayer has enslaved to do their bidding. This would also open the possibility that the Upside Down was once just like our world, but has now been taken over by the Mind Flayer.

I can see that. Though I do still think that:
the demo's are naturally violent creatures. In the same way a wild wolf or tiger would be. Sure,
you can train them with a great amount of care, but their base instinct does seem to be to hunt and kill.

[BLACKOUT]
So he would be the overall boss of the series I guess if that was true.[/BLACKOUT]

Really? I feel like season 2 was just as open ended as season 1, if that. S1 had Will coughing up the slug and being transported to the upside down, Hopper jumping into the black car, and then Hopper's food drops which all set up a 2nd season. ST2 had [BLACKOUT]the Mind Flayer looking on and then the 008 story. Will is back and normal, 11 is back, Jonathan is with Nancy, and it gave most everyone a happy ending[/BLACKOUT]

Yeah, to me S1 just felt like a more well rounded self-contained episode. It certainly left some hanging threads, but many of them felt more like stingers at the end of a scary movie or something. Will's Slug reminded me very much of a Goosebumps-type ending. And because of the genre of Stranger Things, I wouldn't have been surprised had they ended it with that. Same with Hopper leaving the eggos. There were definitely some other threads, the Nancy love triangle thing...but overall it felt like the characters in S1 went through more complete arcs.

In S2, I feel like many of them started arcs that were only just explored by the end of the season. So while it did more less give us a "happy ending" for many of the characters, where their stories were going didn't feel nearly as complete.

My interpretation is season 2 is basically a season dealing with everybody's PTSD. From Mike not able to move on from El's vanishing, El not being able to move on from her past, Joyce and Will not being able to move on from the Upside Down, Hopper and his daughter issues, Nancy and Barb, etc. The whole season was them dealing with their specific issues to get to a stage where they can finally move forward. It might not seem a ton has happened, because it's not supposed to.

To go from standing still to being able to move forward is already a big step in terms of PTSD. And that's what that last episode signified. El confronting her anger and finally going home, Mike finally reuniting with El, Hopper getting a daughter, Will finally (seemingly) free of the Upside Down, Nancy got jusice for Barb, etc. I think people wanted to see more steps and progression, but really, it was just one step. it was a big step for each, but still it was one step. To be able to move past trauma and start living, until the next adventure at least. And that's where season 3 comes in, with everybody more or less resolved by their demons, it's time to see how their new selves will interact with each other and new threats. That's my interpretation anyway.

I didnt look at it that deep, but that's a good interpretation.

I like that interpretation.

And though I like the idea of the Upside Down being a universe that was once like ours, but was conquered by the Mind Flayer, I don't think it as anything like the multiverse theory. The Upside Down looks like it is merely a dark mirror of our own world, with inanimate objects like cars following their placement in the 'real' world.

Ah I had that theory that the Upside Down used to be literally our world just in a parellel dimension. Except in that dimension, something happened. Maybe 11 never escaped, maybe this maybe that and it got conquerored by the Mind Flayer

I hope they never fully explain it

I do think the [BLACKOUT]Max/Lucas[/BLACKOUT] relationship felt a little rushed, but Jesus Christ, it was a kiss, not a rape scene. People get so up in arms about everything these days.

Jesus tap dancing Christ... It's not LAST TANGO. It's obvious that the set is a supportive and caring environment. I'm a definite dyed in the wool center-left guy and... This sort of stuff doesn't endear Progressives to the general public.

I'd need to watch the bit of aftershow they talk about, because on-paper, what they say to her seems odd, but if the camaraderie is apparent between them and it's just friendly ribbing or whatever, then it's probably not that deep.

Should definitely watch Beyond Stranger Things. The actors give a lot of insight to the characters themselves and makes you appreciate their arc more. And in just texts and no emotions, a lot of things can be taken out of context. People just grasping at straws for clicks now in the vein of Hollywood's current house cleaning.

I've seen Beyond Stranger Things it seemed like playful ribbing to me, but I think the most important thing is how the actress really feels about it.
I think the actual worse thing is the Duffer Bros referring to Max as "the prize" in some interview I have to find it. There's no reason in this day and age to do that.

The other villains are much more interesting though. And he's only an antagonist for 2 less important characters until the very end, which is at odds with the amount of focus he got.
Exactly

At least the bullies in the first season tormented all the kids. Billy just had like 3 moments with Steve before the finale, but he did have a lot with Max

I saw the Beyond Stranger Things episode and it was more like friendly banter/ribbing than bullying.

It like a fairly innocuous kiss, it wasn't like they made out or anything. Being a teenager and being filmed kissing someone in front of people is probably awkward but it isn't exactly a traumatizing event.

I'm guessing kids these days don't play kiss chase anymore

And also the actor who played Lucas got "pranked" as well with the same thing
