Sci-Fi Stranger Things (Netflix) - Part 1

I figured that's what the, "every ending has a beginning" thing meant. Still a little sad.

A lot to process here. Good to finally have release dates as well as official confirmation that season 5 will be the last but what I find especially interesting is that they said season four is nearly twice the length of any previous season but there were also only 9 scripts. Since they're splitting the season in two, I can only assume that means each episode will be between 75-90 minutes. No wonder it's taken so long.
Don't take this too literally. This feels like the marketing excuse for dividing the season

I feel like the marketing for this has been all over the place.

First, after numerous nothing-teasers and clips (the release frame of which felt like forever), they FINALLY give us a release date, but decide to split it into two parts, same as Ozark.

Second, they come up with a "this is the ending/finale/conclusion" moto, then IMMEDIATELY after reveal it's been renewed for a 5th and final season. :funny:

The synopsis

“It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time — and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.”

This is the beginning of switching to weekly releases, like everyone else.

Also, there was no way this would be the final season. They were always going to tell us first. That's why this is the "beginning of the end".

Why can't it be both? I doubt they'd lie about the overall length of the season being twice as long as the others, especially since it'll have been almost three years since season 3 so I can see them wanting to give us as much show as possible. The previous seasons were roughly between 6-7 hours in length so if this is, say, 12-14 hours total then splitting the season doesn't seem unreasonable, especially since it's only five weeks apart.

It's ironic that Netflix, the pioneers of binge watching streaming content, are going to start falling in line with every other platform and start releasing weekly content. But I suppose a streaming show does have more longevity in the public consciousness if it goes on for a month or two than if it's dropped in its entirety designed to be binged in a weekend only to become yesterday's news within a week.

Yeah, I would have been more upset if Part 1 was in May and Part 2 was in the fall or something but five weeks is nothing. I'll have the Obi-Wan show on D+ to keep occupied in the meantime.

Man, I forgot Obi-Wan too! Now at the end of May I have to call in sick, send the wife and kids to a hotel, destroy my phone, stock up on beans and coffee and prepare for nothing but a visual feast to the eyes.

While it's theoretically possible, with all the new characters and all, I have heard this before and it turns out the season is actually shorter overall, but you know, the premiere and finale were longer. Or it's like 10 mins. I am sure we will have a supersized start and finale. But this is most likely creative math that comes with 9 episodes instead of 8. Maybe every episode will average 15 minutes more overall. Maybe the finale is 90 mins. But I am going to go in with doubt. Netflix aren't exactly trustworthy.

Also just look at your rough math and their statement. There is a a lot of room between nearly twice the length of 6-7 hours, and 14 hours. Like say, 9-10 hours overall. Technically, that is nearly twice the length. Nearly.

That won't be why they do it. Service that is already way too expensive for the content they have is trying to suck people dry. Season 5 is going to be three years away as well, so they can suck those lapsing subs waiting for it dry.

I guess we'll find out. But based on the info we have I'm at least willing to bet that all of the episodes are at least 60 minutes each. Time will tell.

Either way, the recent subscription price hike has me considering dropping Netflix by the end of the year. I'll resubscribe for the final season of Stranger Things and anything else that I might find interesting like the Mike Flanagan shows but overall I've found myself turning to HBO Max and even Disney+ a lot more than Netflix recently.

As for season 5 being three years away, I certainly hope not. The only reason why there was a three year gap in between 3 and 4 was because of Covid. If not for that, we'd have probably gotten season 4 last year and production for season 5 would have likely been underway by now.

That's where I'm at. Stranger Things season 5 and You season 4. Other than that I'm out on Netflix. They just don't have it anymore. Been that way for years imo. (Speaking of which I need them to drop the Stranger Things season 3 blu ray.) Hulu and HBO Max are the ones I use the most anyway

On another note: I like the change of opinion on HBO Max tho. I remember everyone acting like it was trash when it dropped. Which is crazy to me because HBO Max always had dope content. Never got the dogpiling and hate. As long as they have HBO content they always have gold

This!

I love those VHS blurays they put together. I assume it’ll come out when 4 is released as they did with 2 when 3 came out.
One would hope. Physical media has only been getting less popular but I can see Netflix continuing with those releases since it's their flagship show after all.

Yes, I think it’ll continue for this. The Crown they continually release bluray seasons as well.

Target apparently stopped selling them. Glad I picked mine up when they first came out. They were cheap too. Target had them for $10 brand new on Black Friday.

Yeah I think the biggest shows Netflix still do it. For now. I don't think HBO (except their biggest shows), Disney+, and Hulu do it anymore

Disney will when they’re not making much more from new subscribers. They’ll make a Marvel and Star Wars TV box set, sell it for a very high amount, and make that extra money.

For now, they keep it exclusive so that you keep subscribed… seemingly forever!

Wait so we got Stranger Things and Obi-Wan dropping the same week as Top Gun: Maverick? That week is going to be absolutely crazy as far as new content goes because I'm extremely excited for all three of those things.

If you add in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness also coming out that month that might officially make May one of the most awesome months ever this year and I'm so down for it.

Did you guys think they’ll do some sort of sequel (or more likely, prequel) show once this ends? Even though S4 sounds like it’s going to go into the origins of the Upside Down, I’m sure there will be some stuff that’s unexplained.

I’m 50/50 on that. I love love love this show and spending more time in the ST world is always going to be appealing to me (unless they pull a GoT and ruin the ending) but it might be better if they just let it conclude in 5 well-written seasons.

Like massively popular shows before it like Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead, I'm certain there'll be spinoffs and the most likely subject for it is a prequel about the Hawkins lab where all of this started. As for a sequel, it's hard to tell just yet without knowing how it ends.

Yeah I'm good on spin offs, prequels, etc. Let sleeping dogs lie.

Although I'm sure Netflix or anyone will pump this for all it's worth

The consistency of the seasons thus far has been strong, I would say maybe a film at the end of S5, with them all grown up and maybe a 'return to' vibe but you end up with it being an 'IT vibe' to it all, but as far as the TV seasons, if they say 5 defiantly is a completed story, lets keep it that way and go out on a high (I hope & anticipate).

I wouldn't mind spinoffs as long as they keep the mystery vibe. Basically what I love about this series is the mix of horror and coming of age drama. Make a conclusive S5 but start fresh with another mystery, another town, maybe another decade, whatever. But keep the tone.

100% sure, there will be a sequel. It’s Netflix most successful series. Since Netflix is losing non-originals every week to the other streaming services, they have to rely on things, that worked in the past.

Steve and Robin side quest spin-off is the only thing I'd find acceptable :o

Also, just looking at the posters. I wish we'd get some more creative mixing and matching. I understand wanting certain characters together, but I wish some of the groups would mesh more for different dynamics.

There's wiggle room for possibilities beyond Season 5 even coded in the Duffers' statement. I wouldn't exactly be opposed to it on principle, but I don't honestly care nearly as much as I want these last two seasons to be as good as they can be, and for the show to go out on a successful note of conclusion. I'm very glad they've set an ending date, and that Season 4 will be leading the story toward that. I'm also selfishly glad they're splitting it up so I'll have more time with it. It's been three freaking years after all. I hope they get the ball rolling on Season 5 pronto.
