Suicide Squad box office prediction - Part 2

I think it was the 3 DCU movies vs. the 3 MCU movies that he was doing.

Maybe and you can ask C.Lee, if he did direct comparisons between SS and singular movies and didn't make it seem like a DC vs. MCU post.

I can see why the mods have to be careful. Sometimes we get our panties all up in a bunch for no or very little reason. It's too bad because sometimes MCU DCU comparisons can be enlightening. If you're trying to trumpet one Universe against the other, give it a rest. People probably know my personal opinion about the "competing" Universes, but that doesn't stop me from being glad the SS has had very good BO numbers and was a fun movie to see. I hope it makes 750M. All the better. IMO it's not like it was one of those stinkers that shouldn't have made a dime ($#!tformers....)

really unfortunate that its not getting a china release, it would've surely broke 800m. seems likely that JL dark wont get a china release either

The only reason why people do it is because it's obviously fun and exciting for the majority of the population to discuss which "team" is better. The only way i can see that as a problem is if people don't make the effort to present logic and respectful arguments. If i'm just insulting you and making jokes about what you like, well...i'm not doing this forum any favours. But as long as that's not happening, i don't see the problem. As long, of course, you keep discussing this topic's central subject.

I'm also happy for the results but i hope WB doesn't get even more careless with its movies.

So I spoke with a friend in regards to the China release situation, and apparently it has nothing to do with violence or Katana's costume. Apparently China bans movie that involves ghosts and spirits, so this might have more to do with the Enchantress plot than anything else. For reference, Ghostbusters was banned from China for those reasons. If SS2 deals with something more grounded than the supernatural, it might get itself a China release.

It just occurred to me....what about Harry Potter? Do they make exceptions if there's a lot of money to be made? What a stupid, insipid reason for not showing a movie. It IS a shame SS didn't get a China release and if JL doesn't that'll be a shame too.

I just don't get some people.

They banned Ghostbusters for that very reason

China's official censorship guidelines technically prohibit movies that "promote cults or superstition" — a holdover from the Communist Party's secular ideology — and the country's regulators occasionally have been known to use this obscure provision as rationale for banning films that feature ghosts or supernatural beings in a semi-realistic way (Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest suffered such a fate in 2006, thanks to its depictions of ghouls and cannibalism).

In Australia, SUICIDE SQUAD ($23M) has surpassed the entire run of BATMAN V SUPERMAN ($22M). Villainy run amok...how they do it Down Under.

Well I don't know about Harry Potter, but a lot of big releases hit that roadblock. So the latest in question is whether Dr. Strange can bypass it.

This almost guarantees that JL Dark won't get a China release. It's just unfortunate that SS's story dealt with Enchantress, instead of something more grounded like say Deathstroke. But it seems they're saving Slade as the baddie for Bat solo, so I'm good :woot:

The thing about that China rule is that mystic elements are not prohibited, AFAIK, many chinese movies revolve around magic, religious elements and supernatural folklore. I'm not sure what it is that makes the ban, probably when it is about superstition (like ghost, not related to any religion, or in a scientific/real world setting maybe)

I think I have to repost my very first Bot post here.
The technical reason a film like Ghostbusters would be banned in China and not the Harry Potter franchise is that Chinese censorship prohibits works of art encouraging superstition. It's based on old censorship rules from then-Marxist China, especially its atheism. Films containing "God", "gods"... films suggesting there is some sort of empiric reasoning behind the worship of deities... are denied on principality. Generally speaking "magic" could offend but "ghosts" and "gods" are viewed as worse. And of course it doesn't help with Katana and her Japanese flag. It should be noted that China has deep grievances against Japan such as their refusal to apologize for the Nanking massacre.

Yeah. I'll bet Disney plays it smart and gets DS in the theaters. Plus when you're spending tons on money on a Disneyland venture, you kind of have a leg up on the competition.

There's no foreign film company with better relations to the Chinese government than Disney. That stems from a controversy that made their president go to China to hammer things out, and they have been very amicable ever since. Just look at Doctor Strange.

Well forget China, DCEU don't need China :oldrazz:. I'm still salty they dropped BvS from 75% of it's screens second week. If you don't call that a shaft, then I don't know what is.

Somebody needs a hug. :oldrazz: Look at the bright side. They didn't drop SS from a single initial screening.....

Welp, despite the fact that it was a terrible movie, eviscerated by critics, and even had substandard GA scores - it somehow found an audience for these characters.

Suicide Squad - $12,248,439 (-41%)

Nice 4th weekend hold. The previous 2 were rather steep, but things tend to settle down after a few weeks. I think it'll have a rather nice long run with a soft landing. There's nothing out on the horizon that's going to hit it like Fantastic Beasts is going to hit Dr. Strange after 2 weeks.

Terrible is in the eyes of the beholder. It got killed by critics; which is why I don't listen to critics. In spite of everything that you point out (and I'm not disputing any of it), there were evidently a lot of people who liked it (or at LEAST saw it).

That's why I was saying people actually like the characters regardless of the obvious flaws from a film standpoint.

Are you mad or something?

I don't have an unhealthy emotional attachment to these kinds of things. Would you prefer me to not acknowledge what has actually transpired in lieu of my previously critical comments?

Just deleted a few posts that had nothing to do with the Suicide Squad box office. I suggest you keep to that in this thread in the future.

HAHAHAHAHA. That was fast. I suggest you delete more than a few off topic posts, this thread is teeming with them.

Oh, and to stay on topic, I predict Suicide Squad will hit at least $650 million worldwide.

As long as we're on topic now, that's all I'm concerned with.

That's pretty bold of you. Are you sure you don't want to dial that back to 640M? :oldrazz:

Maybe I'm just being paranoid and impatient but WB's silence on the future of the franchise has me a bit worried. Maybe they are just waiting to see where this thing finishes before making announcements, but I would think after week 4, its financial success trajectory is pretty clear to them now to help them determine how to move forward.

Then again, it took Marvel several months to announce GoTG 2 even though we all figured it was a given. I just hope WB doens't wait that long. :woot:

DC has 2 releases each year until 2020.

This year is the first year to try and do 2 movies within a year's span. Who's to say that they don't make it 3, in like 2019. Believe Shazam is in April and JL2 is in June. That leaves Fall.
