Suicide Squad: General Discussion and Speculation - Part 1

The comparison comes up because Guardians and Suicide Squad are lesser known teams that typically feature characters that aren't big names. They can both fit in the misfit mould too I guess. At least this film isn't being compared to something irrelevant like The Losers.

They're gangs of criminals that help the government. It's a decent comparison.

I really hope and think that:

For the first third or so of the film, The Joker will be a member of the Suicide Squad. He will have been captured prior to the film's opening by the Batman and we'll see and hear all about his fascination with him.

He'll also love the fact that his head can blow at any moment and will test Waller near her breaking point to push and detonate the implant in his neck, blowing off his head. Her reluctance and the outlandishness of the idea will make him doubt that the implants even work.

While working for Waller as a member of the Squad, he will secretly be devising his own plan (with Harley's help) and when the moment is right, he'll flip the script on Waller.

The scene I have in mind to show how crazy he is?

Right as he overthrows Waller -- and before her team of guards storm in on the Squad to apprehend The Joker and put him down -- he gets ahold of the detonators for the whole Squad. He'll use them to keep Lawton and the rest at bay. Doubting the implants are actually explosives, and not caring if they actually are, he'll volunteer everyone for a game of Russian roulette, joking that KGBeast should have the advantage. He'll shuffle through all the detonators (including his and Harley's) before throwing away each one to the floor until he is left with only one in his hand. Harley will have second thoughts, beginning to plead with him not to do it, and he'll explain to her why it's funny before pressing the detonator, killing a member of the Squad with a blast before escaping -- giving the Squad a vendetta against him and Waller a target to send them after.

That's an interesting theory...

Don't know anyone's seen this, but this is the trailer for the upcoming Warner Bros film, Focus, starring Will Smith and Margot Robbie. Deadshot and Harley sharing the screen together in this one. :D

Looks interesting. I'll definitely check it out.

I've gotta say the casting choices have been pretty interesting and even though I'm not that big a fan of Suicide Squad I'm more intrigued to see this than Sony's stupid attempt at The Sinister Six.

I bet money they'll write in a romance between Harley and Deadshot through this. Even to capitalise on the whole rumor of Will and Margot getting overly friendly when filming.

I was just kidding with the Goyer comment yall, don't anybody do anything crazy.

Whether it be in this movie or the eventual solo BatFleck film, I hope Harley calls Batman "B-Man." :D

Hmm... Could this be both a SS story and serve as an origin for Harley? Bat-guano crazy Harley being on the team or involved in any way is, frankly, DUMB. Sorry, it is. However, what if Harley works for TFX in some capacity? Say, Quinnzel is a psychiatrist that Waller employs to profile or deal with Squad members in some way. Maybe Joker is some kind of Lector character for the team. He has some kind of information that they can't get out of him. Waller assigns Harley to try and get it out of him, but instead Joker seduces and brainwashes the young woman.

People gotta have something to worry about even if they have to manufacture it themselves.

It's obviously not, but it was a big hit and is still relatively fresh in peoples minds so comparisons are inevitable even if they don't make a lot of sense.

Yup!

The characters in Suicide Squad are quite big with the inclusion of Joker, Harley, and possibly Lex.

I don't agree that WB is making Suicide Squad in reaction to GotG. A Suicide Squad film was in development since 2009. It had a script by Justin Marks in 2011.

The comparison is being made only because GotG is recent. I wouldn't call any of the protagonists in GotG villians either. The closest is the reformed Gamora but the movie clearly portrayed them all as heros. Might as well compare Star Wars to Suicide Squad.

That's putting it vaguely though. Outer space is like the Wild West. Jedis would be considered criminals under the Empire. Quite different from being villians. Nova Corps aren't the government either. They're akin to the Green Lanterns. Quills group wasn't really motivated to help or work for Nova Corps. In fact, they defied when they broke out of the prison and barely listened to them. If they surrendered the orb early on to the Novas, then they would have saved a lot of the Nova fleet and all the damage done to Xandar. Seems like the Nova Corps helped them more than they helped the Novas.

I wouldn't say that WB are making this film in response to GotG, because, like you said, it's been in development for a while. I do, however, think that GotG prompted them to put more money into it and go after big names. Back when we first heard talk of this film, I believe it was intended to be a smaller, lower budget film. I think that was when DC still had the mentality that that only big names like Superman and Batman could draw in huge crowds. However, I think GotG proved to everyone that you could take characters most people have never heard of and make a really successful movie with them, as long as said movie was good and featured some recognizable faces (and voices).

I think, at that point, WB got more confidence in Suicide Squad, and began fast-tracking it, pumping more money into it, and targeting some big names. I mean, it is a bit unusual that out of DC's entire library of characters, Suicide Squad is the first film that will hit theaters after BvS, when much more recognizable characters also have films in the works (Wonder Woman, The Flash). But I think it's a good move, because it helps WB with their world-building concept and yet manages to do something different than what Marvel is doing by having a film with mostly villains come early on in the process.

So do you guys want them to break into Arkham? Personally, I think Arkham should be saved until a solo Batflick. Belle Reve Penitentiary would be perfect for the Suicide Squad. Not only does it give the movie a chance to give other villains that aren't Batman-centric cameos, the prison has also housed most of the confirmed members, served as the Suicide Squad's HQ and even debuted in Suicide Squad #1. Here's some info on it.

Edit: Belle Reve is also surrounded by miles of swamp land, just like the Legion of Doom HQ. Who knows? Maybe the prison will eventually be taken over by supervillains and made into the Hall of Doom in JL.
