Suicide Squad: General Discussion and Speculation - - - - - - - - - - - - - Part 30

Critics went in with disillusioned expectations; Audiences won't.

Excited to see this tomorrow.

I don't know maybe its the fact that most of the critics are old and movie snobs/hipsters.
Nah JK
But there does seem to be a divide between audience and critics this time
I think we need to wait. It is good here, which is good. But BvS also had a healthy amount of love early, and heck still does here. But it did drop in the second. Not that long to wait now. And hopefully everyone one here will have seen it, outside of FC of course. She has to wait. :cwink:

I honestly think you have to lower your standards of expectations to enjoy this movie.
It is just so generic, For a film about villians it plays so safe.
There are so many issues with it.
Poor editing, poor dialogue, Generic action and end of world portal plot. Awful villian.
The Suicide Squad felt out of place in the end of world story to me.

Why would a ragtag bunch of criminals, only 1 of which is a meta be left alone to literally save the world?

I thought they would be sent on a dangerous mission to retrieve some vital document or something intimate. Something smaller scaled. where they are expendable and the government can wipe their hands clean if they don't complete the mission. Like a heist of some kind, where you can see these characters utilize their special strengths in specific ways to further their success in the mission, then for the Joker to be the wild card that screws everything up.
Something like that. instead of this generic end of world shootemup.
This film had the most iconic, most famous villain in comic book history to utilize. and he is written into the movie as a bit part love interest?
You don't put Joker aside, He is too big a character to popular to not utilize his full potential.
Joker should of been the primary antagonist, like he almost always is when he is involved. Not some uncharismatic witch who wants to end the world by making a ghostbusters portal.
Grrrr.
This should of been a success story. Not another divisive mess.

I'm not going to attack the critics or anyone who didn't like the film. If you don't like it, you don't like it. Fine by me.

Critics aren't watching the movie with the regular audience for the most part. Sometimes a movie can be ok, but you feed off the fan environment and like it more.

It's like that movie finding neverland where all the snobby adults have come to the theatre to watch a production of Peter Pan and in order to get a better reaction from them JM Barrie (Johnny Depp) sat them all next to children who LOVED the show and that in turn made the snobs clap and cheer and enjoy themselves

There doesn't seem to be a critics and audience division though. I'm seeing a lot of audience reactions showing disappointment, including my friend who couldn't wait to see it and is actually a little heartbroken at how it's turned out

I am watching it on Tuesday because my idiot brother didn't want to spend 20$ for IMAX in case the movie was bad. Now I have to wait because of him.
You should get that SCENE card from ScotiaBank. :cwink: Will see the movie Friday night, regular 2D though. I'm saving my points for an actual IMAX movie like Nolan's next baby.

DC fans live in a bubble and always believe that there is a division between audiences and critics. Some of them are still convincing themselves that most people liked BvS or loved Man of Steel. Neither thing is true of course.

He would have been the perfect Joker! :csad:

He's got a great smile but I don't know if he could change his voice for the role. Although I bet people said that about Heath.
Would probably have a good chuckle though.

If there's one thing I can say before I've seen the movie it's that Leto at the very least has a phenomenal joker laugh

I can see the trailer now, Leto steps out of a shadow in a traditional dapper suit straight out of the comics and takes off his wide brim hat (think killing joke) to show us his tattoo-less forehead and grill-less smile.

Maybe he could put a spin on the famous quote

"If I'm going to have an identity, I prefer....multiple choice"

And crowd goes wild
That sounds awesome.
I'm beginning to not even enjoy MCU flicks as much in theaters, BP aside, Civil War fell flat for me.
I get what you're saying. However, the fan service was GREAT. It elevates the movie imo.

I preferred the characters and performances in Suicide Squad and it lacked the deep smugness that GOTG had. And I preferred SS's jokes as well.

Thats surprising.
I can't really speak to the pacing in Suicide Squad, but for me the pacing in Guardians completely fell apart in the final act, which was drawn out WAY too long.

And that doesn't change the fact that things that get cited as major issues in certain films are completely brushed over in others.

I think SS suffers from being a been there and done that for critics/some fans though. So in there eyes they've already seen it in a better movie. I do agree that GOTG has its own share of problems. However, it's one of the movies you just go with.
The material is fine, Leto is the problem.
Maybe Leto needs a more discipline director. Ayer seemed to let Leto go off and do his own thing.

I also felt they tried to cover weak scenes with well known/beloved classic songs

I had fun at the theater with my friends and we had laughs, that's more than I can say for the last DC movie I saw in theaters.

Well, your experience seems to be in the minority so far. Even several negative critics noted that the rest of the audience they were with loved the movie.

After Nightcrawler, he is who I wanted for the Joker.

He would have been the perfect Joker! :csad:

Listen folks, this is not a great movie and I can see where the critics are coming from. I can't say that I disliked it though because I didn't. I would be lying if I said that I did. I'm not expecting great legs at the box office. I'm expecting another huge opening and a huge fall.

DC fans live in a bubble and always believe that there is a division between audiences and critics. Some of them are still convincing themselves that most people liked BvS or loved Man of Steel. Neither thing is true of course.

There's a crazy amount of mental gymnastics going on in here from fans in denial. They get too emotionally invested in these projects during production and can't take the disappointment when the final product doesn't blow everyone away

I just goit back..and i'm kinda scratching my head. the movie isnt bad at all. its not great but its a solid 2 hrs of entertainment. 7/10 for me. 6.5 at worst. I'm not sure why the critical reception has been so harsh. Yes its pretty messy plot wise and the villain is pure trash (seriously, wtf was that?). but overall its a fun time, its not green lantern. the audience seemed to like it as well.

I'm veeery interested to see how the box office plays out.

I care about a lot of these characters and want to see more of them, I think.

Will might have played Will Smith, but I see it similar to RDJ playing RDJ. He made the character his own and it worked.

Here is the thing, a lot of people do enjoy those movies. Why? Because DC has this incredibly large fanbase. As a kid who grew up watching Donner, Burton and Timm, who loved reading about Clark, Bruce, and Wally I get it. I am a DC fanboy. I sat through years of Smallville. Even if a lot of people do not like these movies, DC have an incredibly large fanbase. It is why TDK and TDKR broke a billion without 3D.

It is why even with all the divisiveness of MoS, BvS and potentially SS, they make a lot money. Now they spend a lot of money too, but that isn't the point. It is actually incredible when you think how many people know Harley. How many people love the Arkham games. DC is pop culture.

As someone with a mixed-leaning negative opinion on the movie, I would definitely watch another movie with these characters....but I'd really be hoping that it's a much, much better movie than this. This should've, and could've been so much better. The cast deserved better.

Are we not all DC fanboys here? Why else would you be commenting in the hype?

Overall, I was satisfied for the most part with the squad. Would like to see them go on another adventure again and maybe some new friends like Deathstroke.

Just keep Jared Leto far away. I think I need to watch some BTAS to bleach my brain
