Is it true that the Joker actually likes Harley here? That just feels so different.

I got a torn feeling coming from Joker. In a few scenes, he had absolutely NO regard for Harley whatsoever, but in the deep depths of his dark heart, he loves her. It's a great play of characters for a live action take on the two. They can explore so much with it.

Yeah, its true  Totally screwed up the nature of their relationship. And one of the reasons people are finding this characterization of Joker off.

If nothing else, it seems like they have another group of characters worth exploring, even if this movie didn't work out. Just like with Cavill Clark, Amy's Lois, Gal's Diana, Batfleck and my new favorite Alfred.
To me the characters/actors are what saved the film. I could see Ayer's personality in the film and I liked what was there.

Where were the tonal shifts so bad? How was this any different than the tonal shifts in GotG? Seriously... I'll wait for a well reasoned argument because to me, the tone felt IDENTICAL to that of GotG, which went from serious to joking around quite often.

I'll agree with you on the uneven pacing - at times it felt 'off', but so did the pacing in every single CBM made this year, other than Deadpool.

I said it in my last post- the soundtrack songs. It felt like there should have been music score there, and then when the Bohemian Rhapsody trailer dropped with such huge applause that they thought dropping songs in the movie would lighten it up. GOTG to me overall is a lot lighter than this movie was written. This is coming from someone who enjoys GOTG but things its overrated. and Loved MOS and BVS.

I guess I will just have to watch it and see. It is just something I don't think I have ever considered.

Thought that much was evidently clear.
He started out making use of her to stage his breakout. But after she leapt into the pit of acid for him, he turned around for her and that's when it's clear he genuinely loves her a lot more than has been seen in the comics.

I guess it wouldn't be exact. Just more the rivalry/bond they would have.
In my head, I totally see Deadshot as Angel Eyes, while the Joker in his insanity could be more Tuco, if not exactly.

Went to the 7 o'clock showing. Loved it. In fact, the guy next to me muttered out loud while we were waiting for the mid-credits scene: "What were the critics talking about? This was a great (curse word) movie." Everyone I talked to leaving LOVED the movie. I'll put it easily on par with Deadpool if not better. I didn't see any of the problems with pacing & editing that BvS had & I've seen several critics say it's much better than BvS. That's where I'm lost. If TC of BvS is a 6 or 6.5 in many minds & this film is much better than that version, -shrug- I don't know, it's frustrating. This film's critical analysis is more difficult to understand than both MoS or BvS. Anyway, characters are completely accurate & a crowd-pleasing fun ride with dashes of humor & wall to wall action almost from beginning to end. Someone mentioned it having the soul of an '80s or '90s slam bam action film & I would agree. I'll say it got repetitive & dragged slightly towards the middle when they were in the city, but aside from that gripe, it was a totally enjoyable experience. I'm going again Saturday afternoon. I say to folks, go see it. IMO this movie is at least an 8 out of 10 & really should have an RT score in the 70s/early 80s. Can't say enough good stuff, completely satisfied.

This. The soundtrack songs change the tone of the scene by force. They seem like an hamfisted attempt saying, "How do we make this scene seem less severe?". Clearly part of the panicked attempts at "fixing" this film in light of BvS's fallout. It is loud and cacophonous and there's little thematic link with what is on the screen at the time. There were plenty of scenes where we didn't even need pop music. GoTG was more organic, thoughtful and fit with the characters.

I remember seeing those pictures of Joker slapping Harley in the street months ago, I guess they decided not to use it, for whatever reason.

That said, it didn't bother me. Him actually loving her. I kinda like it.

Yeah, the best I can describe how I felt was how he was torn in some regard, but overall, no matter how much they ham it up together, something is always going to be off with those two. I got more of the feeling of Harley's obsession than Jokers love for her. You can see in a slight way that Joker disregards her in little ways.

Apparently abusive Joker did not test well.

The movie certainly makes it seems that way, but again, we see virtually nothing from The Joker's perspective, or of him alone, aside from him asking where she is and threatening a guard with access to her.

His goal in the film is to get her back, from the very little we see of him outside of Harley's flashbacks. It's never explicitly clear whether that's because he loves her dearly, or simply wants his toy back, or is angered by the fact that someone else has a hold on her.

Either way, let's not act as if The Joker has never been shown to actually like or want Harley (for whatever reason) in other media.

That gets me excited.

There were rumors of a The Good, Bad, Ugly type Batman film from Latino Review last December.

Be interesting if they do it. Since Deadshot would be the "Tuco" role.

get

There's a hit out on Joker, Deadshot takes the contract. Batman's trying to stop Floyd from fulfilling the contract while simultaneously trying to lock the Joker back in Arkham.

Not bad.

Hmm. Thats interesting.

I'm not sure I can see Will Smith in "that role"

I could see the Joker in the Tuco role I guess. Annoying the hell out of him on a journey, but Batman finding the restraint to not kill him.

Instead of Deadshot I do see Deathstroke in the Angel Eyes role.

Thank you for the nuanced reply. I am genuinely curious, as most seem to be really liking that aspect of it. Even those that don't like the film overall.

Oh that does work a lot better in my head.

In this cut of the film I felt that the Joker had real feelings for Harley. Which is weird for a fan of the Animated Series such as myself.

Went to the 7 o'clock showing, movie started & I kept thinking 'OK surely this movie is about to unravel & fall apart any second now'. Then 30 minutes passed, an hour passed, & it never came. Loved it & so did the crowd. In fact, the guy next to me muttered out loud while we were waiting for the mid-credits scene: "What were the critics talking about? This was a great (curse word) movie." Its most likely people had a ton of fun. I had a ton of fun watching the film with my friends, but I feel the movie has a ton of structural problems, but most audience members don't bother with that. Its also connects to what I think were most people's problems with BvS. That film can be very boring and a bit too cynical for children. SS, however, is just a lot of dumb fun.
