Summer 2011 box office predictions - Part 2

First day looks to be well over, wait for it, $90 million.

Going along with the Potter v. Twilight talk, I believe Stephen King said it best:

"Harry Potter is all about confronting fears, finding inner strength, and doing what is right in the face of adversity. Twilight is about how important it is to have a boyfriend.''

:awesome:

Deadline saying it's made $95 million opening day. Holy ****. :wow: Surly it couldn't make $200 million, could it?

95 million is freaking gigantic. Nothing will top that for a long, long time. Yes, it may reach 200 million now holy crap.

I expected big, but I didn't expect it to be that freakin' huge. It's made almost the same amount overseas too. Records are going to be broken this week, and perhaps even next week.

Deadline even says it has an outside shot at 100 million, considering how the west coast does. For a single day that's astounding. really interesting to see how much it falls on saturday/sunday.

Holy ****. I mean, it was pretty much a given that it would be the biggest movie of the year, but this is insanity.

I would say Avatar is the biggest movie of the decade.

However the future presents several films that may break HP's record
Final Twilight movie
Titanic 3D (being released on the 100 anniversary of the ships sinking)
The Dark Knight Rises
Episode 1 3D (yeah I know people hate it but dont under estimate star wars fans)
Avatar 2

im sure there are more

Who talks about Avatar anymore? No one.

Harry Potter has been talked about since day one of the first movie. (It's when it got super big...dont tell me otherwise. :hehe:

I doubt the re-releases of Titanic and Star Wars will do that much. Re-releases usually don't make much money (not these days anyway). And I doubt 3D will help much. Many people are getting tired of the whole 3D-thing, and I can´t imagine many being willing to watch the awful Episode 1 again.

HP8 better get more than $160 million this weekend.

Given the amount of screens it's showing on, plus the sleek running time, that pretty much guarantees that every fan(and there are a lot of them) with a wet mouth lining up to see it will.

I expect a huge number this weekend and possibly next.

Having seen the movie myself, I think fans will enjoy it a great deal more than the casuals, who will enjoy it as much as they usually do. Outside of LOTR I really haven't seen a film recently that relied so much on past narrative/plot. This single reason will keep it from touching Avatars totals, TDK is probably safe in this respect as well. People just walked in to Avatar on a wednesday knowing nothing but how to tie their shoe laces and still took it all in. I'm somewhat of an HP fan and I admittedly need to go back and figure a hand full of things out.

I just hope it doesn't pull a new moon.

Is there anything left to say about Harry Potter except for "holy crap!" I read the book and thought Rowling got the ending very right, but wow!

In a footnote, Midnight in Paris also should have become Woody Allen's biggest hit, unadjusted for inflation, last night. It really found its niche this summer. Light but not stupid, funny without having to resort to raunch, and romantic in a summer pretty much void of romances is apparently a pretty good combination. Didn't have to spoil it's big concept twist either.

I know WB is pissing themselves trying to find the next big thing now, because after Nolan ends that Batman run next year.....

just because you and your circle of friends arent talking about Avatar doesnt mean no one is talking about it....and I am sure 2 years from now people will still be talking about this movie:whatever:

I am not going to deny that HP is not big...it is. Box office is evidence of that. However you cant tell me the movie that currently is the highest grossing film cant be considered movie of the decade. The movie that kick started this 3D tend cant be considered.

If Harry Potter only had one movie no one would be talking about it years later.

The clout James Cameron brings has always been met with mixed reactions.

I remember when the Avatar footage first showed up online...people were saying it was going to bomb and that it didn't just look average it looked worse. Cameron always has a window of universal praise, and that's during the time of his films release, but then after it's back to the mixed hatred. The slashfilm cast is the best example of this. Before and after it's release it was and is, "kinda overrated, pretty good." But the actually podcasts aired during the time of Avatar were calling it the movie and visuals of the century and what not.

If there was a way to make harry potter one movie, I think it would be a lot better for it. Even it it would have made a fraction of the profit. Maybe like LOTR 3 movies.

HP8 might make 200 million for its 4-day but not its 3-day.

a lot of people had Titanic pegged to fail....it was over budget and like 4 months late....it was supposed to be a mid/late summer release and didn't make it out till Christmas

Titanic was the number one movie for 15 weeks...which is still the record

Lets also not forget that a blizzard had hit the east coast the opening weekend of Avatar and is said to have effected its take
