Supergirl Supergirl General Discussion Thread - - - Part 12

In watching the round table interviews with Supergirl cast, David Harewood will be directing episode 19 for the 4th season.

We may have scenes between Brainiac 5 and Lena Luthor.

Looking forward to Nia Nal who is making history as the first transgender superhero and ancestor of Legion of Superheroes member Dream Girl.

I imagine that armor suit will be for Kara's double.

If Lynda Carter is coming back, all the better.

With Manchester Black, I wonder if Supergirl will be doing its own version of What's So Funny About Truth, Justice, and American Way? in addition to its own version of Red Sun.

Re-posting for the new page...

That's Nicole Maines, who's playing the new transgender Legionairre, Dreamer.

And adding David's roundtable:

And a different Melissa one:

Someone needs to tell Melissa that Red Son does not involve clones or doppelgangers, lol. It's not about two Supermen with different upbringings. It's an Elseworld about ONE Superman with a different upbringing than the story we're used to.

So much for this rumor of the Supergirl cast not doing press interviews without MB.

Like I said, I think Leanne Aguilera only tweeted that because she found out they weren't going to do press with HER, lol. But yeah, they did plenty of press.

I wonder if Brainiac 5 will induct Nia Nal into the Legion of Superheroes.

Melissa was, finally, in everything. She looked very tired.

I knew I shouldn't have watched that Supergirl Season 4 trailer. It was exactly what I knew it was going to be. Mostly clips of season 3 with a voiceover. And it was just that.

Are all the other trailers like that for future seasons of Flash, LoT and Arrow too?

I loved all the emotional stuff (family orientated) in season 3. Reign was a poor villian.

Change of tone in season 4, so it should be interesting to see how it pans out. Love those characters. All of them.

Looking forward to the next season.

New showrunner should be a good thing with getting a new direction & feel.

I’ve read a few mainstream articles about the addition of Nicole Maines to the cast. And - hokey smoke! - the reader comments are ugly.

My own concern isn’t about a trans character, per se. It’s that Supergirl’s writing staff doesn’t have the talent to do justice to the topic. Typically (and unfortunately), they’re pretty clumsy and heavy-handed when it comes to “political” commentary and subplots.

I’ve just started watching Black Lightning; and the quality of the writing there (at least so far) is like a 100x better. :csad:

I’m looking forward to seeing Kara / Supergirl mentoring Nia / Dream Girl / Dreamer as a superhero. And I guess seeing the two of them learning the ropes as junior reporters at CatCo, working together to break stories, etc. It will be good for Kara to have a storyline separate to the DEO this season.

I’m not sure why the Russians would put Red Daughter in a spacesuit, but I guess they needed to come up with a new way to cover the face after they used the cool and scary mask design for Overgirl. Unless Red Daughter has trouble breathing oxygen or something? It did look very toyetic which was fun to see.

Hopefully they can get Lucy Lawless for a special guest role this season, especially with Lynda Carter returning. And they can’t offer Jerkules screen time and not do the same for the Flawless Lawless, especially if they gave her some kind of eco warrior character.

Is it an actual transgendered person playing this character? Or is it a man dressed as a woman, or a woman dressed as a woman pretending to have once been a man?

They've hired a trans actress for the role.

She seems pleasant and enthusiastic to me.

Trailer w/ mostly old footage, but teases of Agent Liberty and Daft Punk Girl:

Thanks for uploading all the interview vids as well flick.

I'm not familiar with Agent Liberty but I love Sam Witwer and the design and motivations of the character are intriguing. I'm also interested in the Super space suit at the end. :hmm

What is the beef between the cast and this particular reporter?

I think the Arrow and Flash ones have a bit more new footage but they are only two minutes long dude, not exactly gonna eat up your day. ;)

Is Odette Annable not playing in season 4 anymore? What's happened to her character Sam? They didn't really show any proper ending for her (eg saying that she and her daughter were going to relocate and spend time together somewhere now).

I was hoping she'd still be around, and maybe Chyler would also get to spend time with Ruby.

She isn't a regular, so don't expect to see her too often.

it's not been said either way yet... but the impression is that both Sam & Ruby won't be around

I hope we do get that scene early in Season 4. I guess we’ll see.

I know that I am going to regret asking this.
But, what are they saying in the comment sections of these articles?

I thought Sam and Ruby's final scene was fine enough. They'd played the characters out, and since they 'magically' rid Sam of her powers there's not much more to do with her.

And I think that super suit looks pretty cool and at first thought they had finally made a space suit for Supergirl. That way she could survive in space at last. But maybe they can keep it after the Red Daughter story line.

Here an example:
" Look at what the feminist movement has eventually led to. Promoting people with biological problems".

Pathetic. Those who write these kind of comment are the people with real problems.

What was Sam and Ruby's last scene? I don't remember now. I don't recall it being any kind of goodbye or closure though.

Good Lord.
It's worse than I thought.

No problem. :)

No beef that I'm aware of. She's generally very friendly with them and moderated their panel at last year's SDCC. They just did fewer press rooms this year (probably for Melissa's sake), and hers wasn't one of them, so she announced about a week ago on Twitter that the SG cast wasn't gonna be doing any press at this year's Con...which obviously wasn't true, lol.

An interview of Nicole Maines. She explains why casting a cis-gender actor for a trans role in today's confusing times (when people still have reservations about trans people) is a way to reinforce stereotypes.

When Maines came out to her parents in the late 90s and early 2000s, trans women were solely portrayed by cisgender men as either sex workers or drug addicts, which she said painted a very specific image.

“They’re men in dresses and that was damaging for a long time.”

Maines hopes the “Supergirl” casting is part of larger wave of the “right representation” of the trans community.

“I think we’re in a time right now where more than ever representation in the media matters. And what we see on television has a very dramatic effect on our society.”

Maines also talked about the recent controversy surrounding Scarlett Johansson, who bowed out of playing a transgender man in a feature filming after her casting sparked an intense backlash online.

Johannson’s casting, according to Maines, would’ve only furthered stereotypes about the trans community.

“I think that cis gender actors don’t take roles out of malice, it’s just a failure to realize the context of having cis gender people play trans gender characters,” she said. “We don’t see the same issue with sexuality, we see straight people play gay all the time. With trans folks we have a lot of people accusing us of just playing dress up for whatever reasons and that’s just not true. Having trans people play trans roles show that we are valid in our identities and we exist.”

It is not quite the same as straight people playing gay characters.

It might help if trans people can play cis roles and then, you can do vice versa. But does that happen?
