Supergirl Supergirl General Discussion Thread - - - Part 12

And now photos of Kara in a black tracksuit with the book are floating around.

I feel like the crossover is going to be gloriously chaotic.
I'm slightly concerned to be honest. The first crossover was okay, the second (Crisis on Earth-X) was simply too much. Initially I thought this years crossover (what with it excluding Legends) was going to be smaller and more … watchable, but the more I read about it, the more chaotic it sounds. I can't help but worry that it'll just be another grand spectacle of a mess. :(

I had the same thought and concern. Eliminating LoT this time around seemed to acknowledge that the last crossover was a tad overstuffed. So, going for smaller/leaner would be a way to tighten the story and give more focus and screen time to the remaining solo heroes.

But with Superman/CK, Lois and Batwoman as added guest stars - plus a sizable roster of villains (Arkham doctor, the Monitor, various evil doppelgangers) - it appears that the overall cast might not be much smaller. Or that the plot will necessarily be more simplified or streamlined. And instead of four hours (from four shows) to cover all this stuff, there’ll only be three.

All that said… the hints, clues and images we’re getting about the crossover look promising. Maybe they can pull it off.

Oh I hope so too, cause there's so much potential with these crossovers, but I've been left less than impressed with any of them thus far. Smaller scale crossovers are the way forward though, they've got to be. Trying to cram so much into three hours (or less) just ruins the overall experience, but we'll see...

Wow I couldn’t disagree more Invasion was great and Crisis on Earth X is better than about 90% of feature comic book movies.

I can’t wait for this years again, I always think how will they top that yet they continue to do so.

Crisis on Earth X was fun and entertaining, I think it would been a great movie imo. I love that the crossovers now are all about the multiverse and seeing different versions of the characters that we all love. The new seasons of the Flash, Supergirl and Arrow have been solid so far. I just hope that the Elseworld crossover lives up to its hype.

I think it’s possible the new crossover tops Earth X now that we’ve seen the lineup and the BTS images. But one sequence I think may be too difficult for them to Top is the Red Tornado sequence. Now that’s how you do a high stakes superheroes against the odds sequence.

Frankly, the biggest (and maybe only) reason why I am planning on watching this year's crossover is because of Superman's inclusion (who I am happy to say that, from the looks of things, has a big part to play).

I haven't loved the crossovers, but I do think they've been improving as they've gone along. Hopefully this one will continue that trend. I have a feeling at least I will favor this one the most, if only for the lack of the Legends crew and all the Supes we're getting in it.

I am excited for the most part for this crossover even though Curtis will be ushered in for part of it.

Hopefully it's just in the Arrow portion.

Elizabeth Tulloch has wrapped her part as Lois Lane for the crossover, according to her Twitter.

Amell confirmed that he just wrapped Supergirls portion of the crossover and there are only 2 days left of filming for it.

The crossovers have been entertaining, I'll give them that, but they've also been very cluttered; when you've got to write for so many central (and supporting) characters, there simply isn't enough time to make anyone truly stand out, and there's countless character interactions that were missed because there just wasn't time for them.

I think they've also suffered somewhat by each episode having a different writer (whereas this new one is being wrote by the same person?) The longest crossover we've had to date would have been Crisis on Earth X storyline, and that was what, 130-140minutes worth of screen time? Infinity War probably had less characters that Crisis on Earth X, and even Infinity War (which had a longer screen time) lacked on character development (understandably so, there was a lot to cover).

I just think, personally, that there could be a stronger focus on smaller crossovers; two parters, either between Kara & Barry, or Barry & Ollie, or even Ollie & Kara (somehow?); Legends can practically fit in anywhere on Earth-1, and so can interact with Barry and/or a future version of Ollie on a whim (they already have with Ollie IIRC).

Focus on the story, not on throwing as many people together as possible for the same of viewers. I am optimistic about Elseworld, cause there's no Legends in it, but I remain cautiously sceptical; Stephen and Grant (at least) are playing three different characters per.

That’s fair enough each to their own I guess.

I actually never knew they had different writers on each episodes parts. The new one has one writer you say?

Don't quote me on it, but I'm pretty sure I've read somewhere that the whole Elseworld arc is being written by the same person/team.

Thus they may fit together a little better. Before, we've had the Flash writers writing for Kara and Ollie, or the Supergirl writers writing for the likes of Ray, Sara and Mick; they may know of the characters, but not necessarily about how to write for them so that they'll fit into their respective style.

With the episodes being written by the same person (if I'm right on that) they should flow smoother. We'll find out sometime in December, but of the crossovers, I expect the Elseworld story to flow better, firstly because of the same writer, and secondly because of the reduced characters (what with Legends not being a part of the crossover this year, and the apparent fact that few of the otherwise supporting characters seem to be involved in the larger picture;

I haven't seen a single snippet of information involving the likes of Dinah, Laurel, Renee, Diggle, Cisco, Joe (understandably), Ralph, Lena, James and a whole host of others. I very much expect the crossovers to be more Superman & Batwoman focused (though the latter reduced) and to also focus on the main heroes with the odd scene with Brainiac, Iris, John, Alex, Caitlin, Felicity & Curtis (maybe?)

Watching DC Invasion for the first time since it originally aired. I’m so psyched for this years crossover wanted to build up to it.

Yes, Primal recently posted a quote from Stephen Amell saying Marc Guggenheim essentially wrote the entire crossover himself this year. So it's a good news/bad news situation for me. Yay for consistency, boo for Guggenheim. I don't particularly trust him with the Supers, but oh well.

Next year, I'm hoping they stick with the "same writers" thing for the crossover, but let it be a different writer(s). The Helbings from The Flash are the best for the crossovers, imo, though Rovner and Queller did a great job with the Supergirl ep of Crisis on Earth-X I thought, so I wouldn't be opposed to them either.

Just for reference do you know off hand what episodes he’s written before?

He wrote the Arrow and Legends portions of the Invasion crossover. The former of which was absolute WORST for its handling of Flash and Supergirl, imo. He had "story by" credits on Crisis but didn't do any of the actual teleplays for any of them. The Flash portion of Invasion was the best, imo, and the Supergirl and Flash portions were the best parts of Crisis, so I'd rather see people responsible for those get the reins next time.

He was a showrunner on Arrow and Legends, so he's written a lot of episodes for them. And those are my least-favorite corners of the Arrowverse, so...yeah, he's not my fave.

See I loved all three parts and the Arrow portion being the 100th episode they had to do something special with the episode to celebrate that and for me it worked really well.

Well then I'd say your odds for loving this crossover are better than mine, lol. I absolutely HATED the Arrow portion of Invasion. SG and Flash were beyond poor portrayals there, imo. When I later watched it with my mom, I didn't even bother showing her that installment and she didn't feel like she missed anything, lol. But I just think he's one of the worst Arrowverse writers in general. I hated the pilot for Legends that he wrote, as well as last year's stupid finale, he took over as showrunner on Arrow after S2 which is precisely when it plummeted downhill, etc. The guy rarely does any good in my eyes.

But I'm just crossing my fingers that he can write Superman better than he writes Supergirl and Flash, and hoping for the best.

The titles for episodes 8-10 have been released, so here are the upcoming eps we know thus far:

4x04 "Ahimsa"
4x05 "Parasite Lost"
4x06 "Call to Action"
4x07 "Rather the Fallen Angel"
4x08 "Bunker Hill"
4x09 "Elseworlds: Hour Three"
4x10 "Secrets and Lies"

I am just going to say that X-men Gold has... soured me on Guggenheim's writing ability.

I'm hoping for another young Kara episode but none of those sound like they would be.
