Supergirl Supergirl General Discussion Thread - - - Part 12

I think the ending of the show is down to a few things but I think if Melissa had wanted to do more I think they would have. Sometimes though mutual decisions are triggered by one thing, it could be that Melissa said to them that she only sees herself doing another season or two, and they were like well the ratings aren’t great so maybe we should end it next season and so on.

I doubt it was ratings, CW makes most of its money from selling the show so as long as that Netflix $$ and overseas $$ is good, they fine.

I hope Supergirl doesn't decide to go to the future or hang up her cape or whatever. I want her adventures to still continue. It's just that we won't be following them anymore.

I hope Melissa is not against making a few guest appearances in Superman & Lois.

She'll definitely appear. I wouldn't be surprised if the Kent boys are written to idolize Supergirl more than their own dad.

And the ratings may be generally fine, but not fine when it comes to the cost of production of SG. "Fine" for one show isn't "fine" for SG. It's hard to compare them.

Exactly. A costly show like Supergirl requires a larger turnout than "Katy Keene" and other cheaper shows.

The fact that the Trades even mentioned the declining Ratings, in what is basically an official ending statement from The CW, is quite telling that Ratings played a significant part in this decision.

It would be strange to have her active on Earth, but never seen... when the world is under threat.

They came up with excuses to have Superman offworld, nerfed or retired during Supergirl's time. It would make sense to have her exit in a meaningful way, for other heroes to defend the planet.

They can say that Kara is pregnant or looking after babies.

The feminists would probably have a problem with that, haha.

Well maybe they even had a problem with Melissa being pregnant and wondered why it couldn't have been Chris Wood instead.

Yeah the citing of the ratings was the biggest giveaway. If the show had better ratings, I’m sure CW would have thrown more money at the cast to keep going...or worst case scenario, retool the show without Melissa (like they did with Batwoman). Honestly it seems like a cancellation to me.

Most likely, I am thinking they couldn't come to an agreement in terms of budget for season 7. Given the issues of production this year, I imagine they were doing negotiations right now.

I’m sure it was a combination of contract and budget negotiations that led to the decision. And I think it was the right one. Melissa’s gotten more substantial career opportunities than any of the other Arrowverse leads, so she’s surely got other things she wants to do, her contract’s up, she’s starting a family, no show finds its best years after 6 seasons anyway, imo...it just feels like the right time.

Especially with how the season 6 to 7 filming schedule is not likely going to give Melissa the time off she has had previously. Because no way was the CW going to keep their big premier month January.

Even though they committed to a season 6 amidst COVID craziness, the pandemic might have been another contributing factor. E.g., Smulders’ Stumptown had decent enough ratings to get renewed back in May. But just recently, it was cancelled. Reason cited: COVID.

It was. As @Sithborg said, there wasn't going to be any break between seasons 6 and 7 and it was cited in the article that scheduling played a factor in the decision as well.

I knew the show would go 6-7 years, whenever Melissa's contract was up, which many assumed was 7 seasons. It's a little bittersweet..I'll miss the show, but I'm happy Melissa gets to move on to bigger and better.

Supergirl is a 6 season show, they aren't going to retool it regardless if she left. Batwoman is fresh and new.

Erin Cummings hinted on Campea's show today that she's heard some Hollywood gossip re: Supergirl that she couldn't tell on air because she promised not to tell. Something about more Supergirl.

That could just mean the character in general not necessarily Melissa’s version. However, if it is Melissa’s version she means then I would take it that she will be returning for guest appearances.

We know there' s a movie planned. What if they're planning to cast Melissa in that?

I don't think there's a chance in hell of that.

It's probably just news about a Supergirl movie happening for real in general. Either a director announcement or Cavill involvement or something like that.

I wouldn't begrudge Melissa Benoist a chance to play Supergirl on the big screen. Despite my not loving the show, I think she played it really well. I'd be very surprised though, tbh. And my preference is definitely teen Kara this time around.

If the show had higher ratings and was making more money, they would do anything to keep it

The only show on the entire network that does well enough to warrant the "pay whatever it takes to keep" treatment is The Flash. And honestly at this point, even that's debatable. But I'm sure Grant got a nice pay raise to stick around a little longer.
