yeah he made him someone people could relate to. My Friend Steve Ellis, the fantasy painter, hates Superman, the comic book character but loved SR for that very reason.

I dont relate to Superman through depressing light filters and emo superheroes... Superman is not based on the character construct of the Superman character from Superman Returns. He's better and much more responsible than the failure that Singer made.

my final thought:

this film is below average. Routh, Spacey, Bosworth, Marsden, Langella, and Huntington were great, but that's aboutt he only thing I actually liked.

The interaction between Superman and Lois is close to none in the movie, and the journey of the storyline itself is a repeat of STM, which was a terrible decision.

The suit is still just as dark and depressing as the rest of the movie is, and the lack of action scenes in this movie leaves me more bored than entertained. After buying it, it now just wastes space in my Superman collection, probably never to be watched again.

SR was just a movie explaining how Superman would be perceived in the real world in it when it should of been a full blown comic book movie with explosive twists, color, light and overly bright environments.

My only hope is that Singer learns from his mistakes and gives us a Superman sequel free from a rehashed journey and 20 year old villains, and finally give us a movie worthy of the character.

That's it right there. "He couldn't tell Lois he was leaving because it would hurt him too much." That is not Superman. Superman does what is right even if it hurts him too much. That is what a hero does.He is selfishly thinking of himself over Lois's feelings and abandonning the responsibility of being in a sexual reationship. Those are not heroic, altruistic or responsible actions. If he has the guts to tell Lois what he is doing, it changes the whole dynamic of the situation. Therein lies the problem, becasue the rest of the movie hinges on the fact that SUperman abandonned his responsibilities. THis situation creates an irony in the character. He can sacrifice himself for nameless millions, but he'll hurt the ones he loves before being hurt himself. That is an emotional coward. He's supposed to be a mature adult, not a teenager. I still say you can abandon a child you don't know about. When he left, he abandonned Lois and his responsibility in the sexual relationship they had. THe sexual relationship brought forth a child. He abandonned that relationship and ANY results of it. THerefore, he abandonned the child he didn't know about, but should have at least considered the possibility of.

How can you abandon something you have NO knowledge of please? That is a ridiculous suggestion, not to mention an OTT one. Yes he was in a sexual relationship, but so are plenty of people yet they never have a child. What is Superman supposed to do, for all of his powers he's not psychic.

Also, he didnt tell Lois he was leaving because he knew how she would react, which is made clear in the movie.

Anyway, this movie is about Superman dealing with the consequences of him leaving. Didnt you understand that? Not to mention the fact that Superman has never been in love before, he's not perfect, cut him some god damn slack!

I was in the middle of watching it when I said I liked it... I was desperately trying to change my own mind on the movie, looking for a bit of redeemable part, but unfortunately, I found none.

I finally accepted that it was a crapy movie, and there's nothing I can watch that will change it.

Final thoughts;

Superman Returns was, overall, quite disappointing on many levels.
It had some redeeming qualities but not enough to salvage what was pretty much a botched effort to resurrect the franchise. It wasn't good, but not so bad that it couldn't segue into a decent follow up which is what we are all hoping for. I remain convinced that Singer was the wrong man for the job and didn't respect the character (or the fans) enough to be entrusted with the property. I hope he's learned a lesson or two and gives us what we really want next time. 'Nuff said....

Initially I was in denial that the movie lacked so much. Then came anger, then mourning, then acceptance. SR could have been so much more if BS had conjured up inspiration from the comic source material, rather than movies already in existance.

Where did Lois Lane go? Who is the stupid broad that we were supposed to believe was Lois?

What happened to Superman's morals and logical thinking? Why did Superman suddenly become so... deeply flawed?

Why is Jason even in existance? He's there just to be there. I hated the character.

Where's all the glorious action? Why was the plane save the only good action in the movie?

Essentially, Donner is having Clark and Lois adopt a kid with super-powers, a kid who's from Krypton and crashed on Earth ( kind of like Clark ). The kid also happens to be the son of Zod and Ursa......

Now, the story is just getting started.....so perhaps there are more twists and turns. But, I would much prefer a situation like that if they wanted to give Clark and Lois a kid. IOW, have them adopt one, much like Clark was adopted by the kents.

The term "Singerman" is neither funny nor clever. While we're at it, why don't we refer to Tim Burton's Batman as Burtonman?

It doesn't matter how many times I watch Superman Returns it doesn't feel like I'm watching Superman, in the way I've grown up watching him and they way he's been depicted in all the previous incarnations. Where as Tim Burton's Batman and Nolans Batman does feel like Batman!

For me, no comic movie will ever feel 100% like a comic. As good as Batman Begins was, it still didn't feel completely like Batman to me. The same with Spiderman too. Ironically, Fantastic Four felt the most like the comic to me, but maybe thats because I don't like the comics that much.

oh, and for the record, I actually liked Routh as Clark/Supes. Aside from the costume, he pretty much looked and sounded like Superman. And, he seems to have a natural mild-manneredness, which is great for Clark.

perhaps, I would have preferred him to be a bit more muscular. But that could also be do to the design / proportions of the costume or the material "restricting" his muscles.

if he could just bulk up a little more, and the costume had a bigger shield and brighter reds, then, I think, he would look EVEN BETTER as Superman....

my problem is not with Routh, or even Bosworth or Spacey..........no, it's with the director and the writers and whoever edited the darned thing......
