Superman SPOILER Review Thread (NO TAGS NECESSARY)

Settling on an 8/10 for now. Could go higher or lower on a second viewing.

Negatives first. Didn't like the Jimmy/Eve dynamic, could've done without the rainbow river, Super harem was a nope, Lex's two henchmen felt like they came from a much worse movie, Hawkgirl was just kinda there, and the literal typing monkeys on social media bit was unnecessary.

The holding out for a hero moment with the little kid was powerful in theory, but also reminded me of the Frank Herbert quote about putting your faith in heroes. Lois was right to question Clark's involvement.

Loved Superman, Lois, Lex, Terrific and Guy. Was worried about Hoult in the trailers, but he nailed it. The overall feeling of this universe is fantastic. The opening text was a bit much, but it allows them to hit the ground running. The movie didn't feel overstuffed, while it obviously juggles a lot. Loved the twist with the message from Clark's parents.

Metamorpho was also a LOT, but I think it's kinda ballsy how weird they got with him. This movie never feels afraid of being a comic book movie. Overall I'm really on board with the direction of this universe and particularly looking forward to seeing other creators play in it.

Bring on Supergirl!

We are in a Gunn-Movie in the end. :clown:

Im overall positive. Gunn reduces his silly humor. I get tired of his formulare a little bit (like Controlroom is a Gaming Center, Cute Animal used as a crowd pleaser, Eve/Jimmy dynamic, Nathan Fillion), but he never fails to create heart warming moments.

I like to highlight the score for this movie as well and obviously: The Casting. Im totally sold of Corenswet, I loved Rachel anyway since Ms. Maisel. I really like that Kent family look like real people and no "Hollywood Beauties". Also Mr. Terrific was handled very well and I was very sceptical since his portrayel in the Arrowverse was so boring.

Good 8/10!

How can Superman justify letting another war happen when he stopped this one?

War will simply adapt to account for Superman. More stealth and secrecy, or the development of hi tech weapons and metahumans that can keep him busy.

In theory there should definitely be fewer wars though. Like what's the point of Superman if he can't make the world a better place overall?

Had to sleep on it but yeah, objective 8-9/10 (depending on if particular changes to the canon are able to gel with you or not) but personal 10/10 for me, exact same as with The Batman

While I can absolutely understand not being a fan of the message from the Els and some have given fantastic reasonings for why it was a worse change, I feel like the comments made about Superman being an immigrant by Gunn and the rest of the cast is good evidence that he wasn't trying to downplay that element of Superman's backstory at all. For better or for worse. Me personally, I don't think the Els being *******s necessarily downplays Superman being an immigrant and that story. Superman is still an immigrant, he was still sent here from Krypton. Regardless of if the Els do it for altrustic or awful reasons, it happened. And as Pa Kent said in the movie, what's important is Clark's own choices. It's definitely not a choice I'd personally make, but it's one I can live with considering the emphasis it gives on Clark being good for good's sake, which is the most Superman thing there is.

Also lmao I cried like 5 times. Not hyperbole to say I've needed this goddamn movie for 13 years, to remind me and the rest of the world about what real punkrock is.

Good movie, bad movie, Superman is well and trully ****ing back. The world is better for it.

With the Els, my view is: had this been the very first Superman story, evil Jor-El/Lara would not be an issue. Is it perfunctory or does it add something? Thematically, the film is about Superman deciding which beliefs to be defined by. Realizing that the principles learned on Earth are enough, and worthy of tying his identity to, questions the Donner film's notion of "alien dad has all the answers". Because had he not had Marlon Brando's instruction manual - or if that manual had not been benign at all - would he still be willing and equipped to be Earth's hero? This movie says yes.

I always hated the idea of evil Els. Wouldn't want it to be canon in the comics. But same as with The Batman and the corrupt Thomas Wayne: if it serves this story, I'll buy it.

If you recall earlier in the film, the Justice Gang did not even support Superman's intervention in Jarhanpur or other than Terrific were even willing to help Lois find him. The fact that they decided to intervene in Jarhanpur was proof that they came around to his way of thinking and were inspired by his example.
Agreed. But I think it would've been communicated better if the Justice Gang's disagreement with his intervention had been more emphatic, if Guy, Terrific and Hawkgirl had all left no doubt that they thought Superman's actions had been INSANELY STUPID, so that them showing up was more of a genuine surprise. It was definitely set up and the info was definitely given; it just needed to be more, imo, to enhance the emotional effect.

It's a similar problem to Man of Steel: Superman fighting the alien machine in the Indian Ocean while people in Metropolis are going through 9/11 times ten. The itch isn´t to see him fight off alien tentacles, it's to see him rescue people from recognizable real-world horror. But granted, this film does address the idea that even if he can't be everywhere at once, he can count on his example inspiring others to also do the difficult thing.

This was very clearly a James Gunn movie from front to back. For both better and worse...still processing.

I think it was overall a good and enjoyable time at the movies...and I'm happy for the Supes fans that feel like they finally got the version they wanted/needed. The cast was great as expected. David and Rachel’s chemistry Lois and Clark chemistry was the clear highlight of the film for me. The interview scene was fantastic. I thought the way the movie used Luthor was perfect and clearly timely, but I was also kind of taken aback by how cartoon-y Hault’s performance was. Can’t say the guy didn’t commit, but I kind of need to see how it sits with me on a second viewing. Overall, at the moment it wasn’t quite the shot in the arm for the genre that I was hoping could somehow get me excited about the start of yet another shared cinematic superhero universe. There wasn’t a ton of stuff that made me feel like “wow this feels totally new”… part of that is a result of there having been so many CBMs, another part is Gunn having already directed so many of them. We’re still very far past ‘peak hype’ for me in terms of my personal tastes for the genre, but this does seem to be the first actual zeitgeist-y Superman film we’ve gotten since Donner, and that alone is a major win for DC. I also recognize and respect that I think is largely aimed at a new generation of moviegoers. And hey, anything that is driving people to theaters at this point is healthy for movies and something worth celebrating regardless of the genre if you want to see the traditional movie business still thrive into the future. This movie throws a crapload of stuff at you, and I don’t think it all digested properly for me so I definitely think I owe it at least one more viewing on a bigger screen if possible.

I do think it’s interesting that even though the tones are (literally) universes apart, there a lot of ways this movie can be seen as at least some sort of spiritual cousin to The Batman. Jumping in with the character early in their career, not redoing the origin story. But then having the character confront their origin with a dark twist on their parents and using that as the basis of their arc. Even down to assigning them each closely related genres of rock- punk and grunge. In a world where a character can casually recreate the big bang and open up a pocket universe, literally anything is possible…

I've seen it three times.

I had expectations, read some of the leaks, hoped for a lot while knowing having to start a brand + reinvent superman was not an easy task. But I trusted James Gunn.

1st viewing 6.5 / 10 : Liked it, the weaks points were mainly expectations of where I wanted the story to go
and some directing choice.

2nd viewing 7.5 / 10 : Had so much fun, really went fully in, laughed a lot more, took the ride as it was.

3rd viewing 8 / 10 : A blast, pure satire from Gunn, some soft body horror, all characters are full stereotypes with a twist in them. Still some weakness with the script and editing but it didn't matter anymore. It's just bold and takes risk, which is something I appreciate.

Basically, it's a movie that grows I think. It has weakness in terms of some pacing and writing, but it's a great piece of entertainment. I still laugh at that fight in the background while Clark and Lois are talking, it's so weird and new it really establish this universe. Also everyone panicking at the daily bugle while Perry, Lois and Jimmy are working trying to publish their story. All those subtle moments that feels like Gunn's humour is something I really cherish and find quite unique.

And I like that Supergirl is introduce in the movie instead of the PostCredits scenes, it's part of the film with Krypto, even if it was just a cameo it made sense with the story.

It has that Raimi Spider-man vibe. Cheesy, fun with a big heart.

Let's go DC!
I’ve also seen it three times, and yeah that initial viewing was the most dissapointing. I was hoping to be blown away by this film, and it didn’t really get there. The thing I straight up disliked from that first viewing was the whole clone thing. I know Luthor making clones isn’t nothing new to Superman, but we’ve seen so many superhero films over the years where it’s the hero fighting a mirror version of themselves that it came across as tired. I felt like that third act of just superbeings fighting each other was the weakest part of the film.

The second time it played a lot better because I knew what it was and was able to appreciate it on its own terms. My favorite part of this movie is easily the escape from the pocket universe in the middle of the film. That part was so fun with Terrific trying to track them down, Metamorpho taking out the guards, Superman fighting the guards while trying to protect the baby and Krypto helping. All of that was so much fun and fully embracing the silliness of comics.

I see a lot of people comparing this favorably to the Raimi Spidey trilogy and I wouldn’t go that far because I hold that trilogy in high regard. Spider-Man 2 is still special to me because of how it’s able to balance comic book trappings along with real human drama. Superman isn’t quite that for me, but if there is a comparison to be made between the two it’s how both approach the source material with complete sincerity.

I feel the same about Hoult on my first watch. I very much enjoyed my second viewing but a nitpick I still have is I wish Lex maintained a bit more cool in Act III. Especially in the face of getting arrested; I was just wishing for a bit more of that “I’ll get out of this” attitude rather than tears of defeat.

But he otherwise felt pretty much like All-Star Lex to me. I would have taken a dash more DCAU/Clancy Brown if I’m nitpicky.

Kept help but think the "I'm the goddamn Mr. Terrific" was a nod to THAT infamous panel.

The only thing I didn't really care for was the kents.
They just couldn't sell it to me.
I would have preferred some bigger star power there, Kurt Russell and Susan Sarandon.

As I said in the spoiler free review thread, overall, I thought it was a good film & enjoyable that can be further built upon in future films. It had some encouraging positive things that I liked, but also had some negatives I didn't like.

I liked David's Superman on the whole, I actually cared about his Superman & I cared about what he cared about, which was something the previous two iterations didn't do well at all. I wasn't a big fan of his out of the suit Clark Kent scenes however, the persona was disappointing, I'm pretty sure there was only one scene at the Planet & I didn't think it was particularly good. I thought they'd lean a lot heavier on that this time around after the last iteration pretty much ignored it, but it was more of the same.

The actual in-suit Superman was a lot better though, my favourite moment was in the otherwise annoying scene due to what's going on in the backround is when he arrives at his apartment & is having a bit of a heart to heart with Lois, his sort of closing remarks about how he was going to turn himself in to try & find Krypto even though, his words not mine, he isn't a very good dog, but that he was out there alone & probably scared..

giphy.gif

Fantastic, so much so I had a bit of a lump on my throat because I actually thought they might kill the dog.
There was actually I think two differing families sitting a few rows behind me with their children on the left & right hand side of me. I heard both of them on a few occasions asking their mother/father with great concern a few times as to the whereabouts of Krypto. Being truthful, I thought Krypto was a dumb addition & couldn't be pulled off well in a live action format, but I'll gladly concede that I was wrong.
I can see why they reportedly cut a scene with Ultraman punching Krypto because it didn't test well judging by what I heard behind me.. and the fact I wouldn't want to see the dog hurt either.

Deeply disliked the El's having other nefarious motives for sending him to Earth. Disliked it when Smallville did it, thankfully they sort of bailed out of the idea fairly quickly & ultimately ended up being more traditional. The key difference is the message about Smallville's Clark being sent to rule was never made public, this Superman's been outed publicly which sort of validated a lot of Lex Luthor's mistrust of him. I really wish they'd clarified that portion of the message had been fabricated & it was something else entirely.

Speaking of Nicolas Hoult's Lex, he was fantastic. Genius, manipulative & overall a great portrayal. Only sort of negative was that he was captured/outed at the end as it potentially rules out a President Luthor story.. although does it? Given they went with a totally not Isreal & totally not Palestine fictional conflict in the film, they could again draw from real life parallels & have a convicted criminal elected President of the US..

Rachel Brosnahan was great as Lois, after seeing a few of her things prior to the release of the film she seemed like the most slam dunk casting prior & she was IMO. Sadly the rest of the Daily Planet cast was wasted. Uncovering Luthor should have been something building from each act of the film as opposed to being thrown together in the final stretch in brief pauses in between the action. Would have had them in the movie a lot more.
No clue what they were thinking creatively with Jimmy Olsen being some sort of womaniser, when I was watching I thought this reminds me of Will Farrell's character in The Other Guys when he has all these insanely beautiful women throwing themselves at him & he's oblivious. Just a head scratching decision for me, making him a lot less likable as a character. Actually would have loved to have seen Eve Teschmacher smack him one across the face at the end of the film.

Outside of a few creative decisions, some wasted characters & it's simplistic plot that has been done previously, I did like the film overall. It has at least got the ball rolling for the character & this DCU providing a foundation to build upon.

8/10

I am honestly glad it was not people like that...The Kents shouldn't overpower Clark in the scene. The Kents should be normal looking and acting folks who you could believe would raise a dorky son.

You know what I like...that all of us have different things that we either nitpick or didn't like. I also like that we have different favorite scenes or reacted differently too them. Back in the Darker Times we almost always all had the same issues, the same complaints and the same hopes of what might be coming. That to me is the mark of bad storytelling. (even if I liked the films) The discussion around this film is more varied and we all are excited about different things. So much more fun.

I honestly appreciate how much fun we are all having discussing the film even if some people didn't like it. There is no vileness, no anger, no need for "positivity threads" or worry I might have to go away from the board for a while. We are all just here discussing a film we in some way cared about and being respectful about it.

Whut?? I loved the Kents!!!!!!

Pop was fantastic. The size of his role may have not being much, bit it's honest work, lol.

Movie was about a 8.26 rounding it up to 8.3 for me. Great, but perhaps not a momentous, quintessential movie.

Time for bullet points!!

-A thing that made noise to me: Did he killed his clone? Does that counts as killing? Will the clone come back as Bizarro or sum thing?

-Miss Tess character was portrayed in a bit too harsh form. I mean, I loved her performance, she just needed a bit more substance and less terribleness.

-Jimmy didn't took any pictures that I remember..:bigfrown::bigfrown: But then again, he didn't become a giant gorilla (sadly) nor died almost unarmed in the first 5 mins of the movie (thankfully) so he was great overall.

-Loved the background JGA. especially Green Lantern bonking the flea with a huge bat.

-The proton river scene was the worst scene for me. CGI fest that went a bit too long.

-My favorite scenes were superman solving the nannites in lungs problem, the interview, and anytime pops was in the screen.

-Did Perry found out just that Superman was dating Lois or also that he Clark? Unclear.

-Superman did his corny speech. Which for me worked just a smidge better that Sam's "Do better senator" in his tv series, but hey, blue boy scout gotta do the blue boy scout thing.

Ehhh whatdahelll I'll round it up to 8.5. Worthy of a rewatch!!!

I finally have a chance to collect my thoughts after watching this film on Saturday (07/12). Is this film perfect? No. Does it have some issues? Yes. Was it the film that both the character and fans needed? Absolutely.

Before I begin, I want to firmly state that I still have a special place in my heart for Brandon Routh and Henry Cavill's portrayals. That being said, I feel like David's portrayal will definitely take the character to new heights not seen since Christopher Reeve (on the big screen).

Rachel was just fantastic as Lois. I was invested in both her character and her relationship with Clark/Superman. I hope to see more of her in the coming years.

I had my doubts about Nicholas as Lex before, but he really cemented himself as my favorite cinematic version by the second act of the film. Like others have already said, I could easily see his Lex becoming the President later on.

The rest of the cast did a great job as well. I didn't really feel like anyone was miscast in their roles. My only big complaint is that we didn't get more of them. I would've appreciated 10 more minutes being added to the film's runtime.

I didn't think it was possible, but I actually got emotional watching Pa Kent's speech to Clark. It's so refreshing to see both of his Earth parents alive and well during his Superman years. Speaking of getting emotional, I really appreciated the original soundtrack created for this film. I don't know about anyone else, but the score really felt reminiscent of the classic films that I'd watch back in the 90's (in a good way).

Overall, I'd give the film an 8.5 out of 10. I wish I could enjoy the happy feeling that I had coming out of the theater this past weekend, but it was quickly interrupted when my car's engine light came up. :fuming::sadden:

I've seen the film 4 times now and as much as I love alot of it now, having gone from not knowing what to feel, I also see so glaringly the massive problems it has that could have easily been avoided and these problems could have been fixed in the edit, depending on what was cut. For instance:

The cut from Lex's goons letting out the baby monster and then immediately cutting to the giant one about to stomp the dog was an absolute amateur edit, and that's being nice. Imagine they went from that scene to the daily planet the next day, everyone bantering, doing their reporter business and then the light rumblings of footsteps and news reports coming in of a giant being walking theough metropolis. Clark sees it and quietly exits the DP to then open to a classic shirt rip moment. Boom, done. Flows way better and you get a good shirt rip in that people love to see.

Edits like this are all throughout the film.

This was to mean a joke since one of the goons say: "It will grow" or something like this if iirc. Seeing the movie 4 times in 4 days is a little bit wild, man :beaming:
