WTF Man!!
So they wrecked a couple of cars, wasted 2 weeks filming her scenes and now they cut it all off just like that?
They are making good use of the budget

On the flipside, they would have more time to work on other characters, this film looked stuffed with characters so maybe it is a good decision. And its also better that they did it now rather than after post production, wrecking the pacing of the entire movie like it happened with TASM

Also I am glad Marc confirmed it himself,or people would have wasted no time in blaming Arad/Sony

when has someone been recast because they don't have chemistry with another actor?

sony and webb could have hired any girl to play MJ, they chose her for a reason so then to kinda go actually... she wasn't what we thought.. eh oh... quick cut her so we can recast... that would be weak and i really would be worried about sony and webb

Also does this mean she is still in as MJ in TASM 3 or 4?,I would love if they dump her altogether and cast a different actress.Like Lyndsy fonseca.

Make it happen Marc!!

She was confirmed before Foxx but fans don't like her so Sony is scared and doesn't want her anymore. Easy. Like Peter's origin in TASM1.

wow in that case sony should dress up in school girl outfit and be the fans ***** :cwink:

WB didn't do everything fans wanted for MOS and TDK with casting, marvel also, so if sony did recast because a few fans were crying, woah! i just... wow, seriously i'd for once be worried about this franchise

a recast is likely because inserting scenes from tasm2 into tasm3 wouldnt tie in with the story. still hoping she remains in tasm 3

This is MJ we're talking about. If they want to make more than 3 Spidey movies, at some point they're going to focus purely on them and if they don't have any on-screen chemistry? That would mean after Gwen's death, you have your two LEADS with no on-screen chemistry.

Actors have been lost from films or re-cast late into the process when what they thought was there on-screen wasn't how they thought it would turn out.

I think it's just that the script is mediocre or they had no plan. But the above is the explanation behind that one possibility.

Probably unrelated but after watching Sony's E3 press conference and how they clearly listened to the Playstation fans online and are catering to what they want, could it be that this is a new direction that the entirety of Sony is looking to move towards.

Keeping up to date with what many fans are saying and acting on that ?

If enough people complained about Shailene not being their MJ, that could have swayed Sony's decision in one way.

I can imagine a Sony bigshot going: "OK, the fans don't like Shailene, if she blows us away in her scenes we're gonna say F it and run with her anyway but if she so much as looks at me the wrong way she's a goner."

I think it'll work out great for PS4 but with this I'm not too sure.

She looked to have been a sort of dragged out cameo. The only scenes we saw her in is her talking to Gwen on Peter's porch (which can easily get cut), and the Rhino thing (it looked as if she was just witnessing the carnage at work and didn't seem to be in danger or need of saving, so that could be cut), and the scene where she gives Peter a ride because his car is broken down, they can cut that out and people can assume his car is fine or that he took a cab or something. Better to streamline the story so it doesn't become convulated or jarring due to too many new characters being introduced.

shailene is a good actress and thats something any studio should be glad to have, so seriously if a few fans cried about it and sony recast because of that then my goodness

its like what they did with lois lane in MOS, she is blonde... they could have made her brunette like many fans wanted but they didn't, they changed quite alot of the characters actually

this would be really low for sony

I don't think so, most likely Shailene will come back for TASM 3. Also, I think it has been more of a Marc Webb decision.

That being said, I wouldn't mind her role to be recast. She's a good actress, but she's no MJ.

What was wrong with Lane being a red head? She had red hair in Doomsday.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind her being recast. If that's what's happening, then I respect Webb's decision. I do feel bad for Shailene, but I'd rather have a more comic-accurate MJ anyway.

Exactly

We don't really need MJ at this point. Better to have Peter meet her in college and keep the movie from being too jammed pack, though I don't think it's as packed as people are making it out to be. Think about all the characters that were introduced in the first Star Trek movie. It'll be Toomes, Harry, Norman, Rhino, Electro. Harry, Toomes, and Norman are likely to play small roles, while Rhino will be a medium sized one (think Two Face, perhaps even less than that), then Electro as the focus. Plus the movie could be about 2 and half hours. Harry has about 10 mintues, Norman 7-8, Toomes 3-5, Rhino 15-20, Electro 30-45. That would still leave over an hour for purely for Peter and Gwen, which of course Peter will be intertwined into a lot of the scenes (of course) that I posted above. Aunt May could fit a good 10-12 mintues of screen time, which is still probably longer than she had in the first.

maybe this will all tie in with webbs spidey universe and his quest to create and expand... keep that in mind

That probably isnt the case

Webb and co probably saw that the trilogy and the movie was getting stuffed.
So they decided to space it out to 4 movies and introduce MJ in TASM3 to give this film breathing space

Whether she will recast or not,is difficult to say

Well, I'm sure all the people who hated her are happy about this news and are now looking forward to the movie a lot more.

I'm with those that are pretty damn sure she'll be back for the third/fourth film and they won't recast. I don't think for a minute that they 'listened to the fans' as some have said and will recast her.

To me this is just like the first movie where they cut out the subplot with Parker's parents, on a much smaller scale of course since MJ only had a few scenes in this apparently. Although I enjoyed the first film and I'm exicited for this sequel, it sounds like sloppy film making when they don't know what they want from the script...after they've already started filming.

I hope that scene remains,it had good potential

They just have to cut out close-ups of Woodley(if there are any) and make her a random stranger

She probably had such a small part in that fight scene with the wrecked cars. It was probably just a reaction like the waitress from the Avengers. "OH MY..."

Hey guys, I'm new here!
Found these forums with active Amazing Spider-man 2 discussion, got excited and decided to register. Hopefully you'll excuse my bad English! :P

Now about Woodley recast.. My guess it's because she's involved with another franchise called Divirgent(?). Sony probably want an actress with no conflicting schedules for part 3, 4 and beyond.

The good news about this is that it's safe to assume that Marc Webb's coming back for, at least, TASM 3. Probably, he was the one that talked to Sony about TASM 4 being made too, as he sees the main plan too big for just 2 or 3 movies.

Funny thing is that TASM 1 can pretty much be left aside if they're aiming for a The Night Gwen Stacy Died/Sinister Six/Peter parent's story.

UPDATE: Webb has now explained his decision, and there’s word that another actress could play the role in The Amazing Spider-Man 3. More after the jump.
Why Webb chose to cut out Mary Jane isn’t clear. It may have something to do with the fact that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is already teeming with new characters as it is. Or it could be related to Sony’s recent announcement of a fourth Spider-Man movie, due out in 2018.
Since MJ was a bit part to begin with, her absence likely won’t shake up The Amazing Spider-Man 2 too much. But it’s tough to tell how this changes her involvement in the franchise as a whole. We don’t know whether Woodley’s already shot scenes will simply be moved into the third film, or whether her introduction will have to be rewritten entirely.

regardless her being cut will not have a major impact or even slight impact on the film if her role as mj was really as short as they say it was
