Maybe I should be more specific. Bringing up other superheroes to have a constructive conversation about Spider-Man is completely fine. This is a superhero forum after all and comparing traits, abilities, and philosophies between these heroes is ok.

Its probably true that Batman AND Spidey spent their early days fighting street crime to some extent (at least in the comics/cartoons), and as they became aware of larger threats/injustices they set their sights on the big time operators. Plus, when they started disrupting criminal activity in their respective cities, it put them on the radar of the higher ups, making them targets of Falcone, Kingpin, etc as well as the more colorful supervillain types.

Spidey especially, a la Daredevil, still patrols his turf and is certainly not above taking down purse snatchers and rapists and the like. Despite his rather large power set, he keeps it real for his peeps.

Thanks for keeping the peace, craigdb. Many of the problems on other boards is due to a lack of proper oversight. 99% of us are perfectly capable of discussing Bats and other heroes in relation to Spidey without being silly about it (not calling anyone in particular silly), but that 1% can wreak havoc if left unchecked. Keep up the good work.

LoL. Well with this talk out genetic splicing etc it could lead to a real life spidey or it could back fire and create some horrific stuff. That also seems to be the case when people try to play God you know?!

I remember watching a show on genetic splicing once on the Discovery channel. It was really interesting to watch and my buddies and I had a discussion about it after...the ethics and what the next "logical" step was for human development. Humans, as it stands, are incredibly intelligent but very physically weak. I can see why Connors is so insistent on having his work succeed...a world without weakness seems very desirable.

Nah, an "I love you!" won't get you noticed. Everyone will be shouting that. Gotta come up with something more off-the-wall. When I saw Martin Sheen on the sidelines of a college football game, I yelled, "Hey, Uncle Ben!" He smiled and waved.

I love Batman, but theres a reason he hasnt spent much time in the movies fighting street-level crime. It just doesnt make any sense for a billionaire to invest all that time and money and blood beating up burglars and muggers when he could just donate a bunch of cash to the local PD to boost their street presence, which would be much more effective.

Even Daredevil, the ultimate street-level superhero, spends most of his time battling mob bosses and supervillains. He slaps around the occasional petty criminal in his hood just to stay fresh.

But if he just paid all that money to the police and didn't dress up as Batman, it wouldn't be a comic book! And it wouldn't be fun to read! (Or watch).

Well, to be fair, Spidey has always had bigger-level criminals to go after. He has many supervillains that are, as a whole, much more powerful then Batman's villains (which only makes sense, given that Batman has no actual powers.)

Spidey's abilities also make it possible for him to capture low-level normal street thugs much faster then Batman could ever hope to.

They said it best in the dark knight when a guy said "you have more of a chance winning the power ball then running into him." The reality of the situation being, batman has no clue when a crime is going to happen and the exact location. In a massive city it would be near impossible, even if you knew where it was, to get there in time. Thats why batman has to play up the detective aspect.

Spider-man on the other hand has powers so its a lot more believable that he can run into regular thugs. That's the great part about this character, its a heightened reality where things aren't so far fetched but still enough to have a great time.

Interesting indeed. To the bold: not neccesarily, as think about it, a baby's DNA genes is that of a combination of their Mother's and Father's, but the kid could grow up to look more like one or the other or neither. Also I assume if they mix the genes with an already fully grown human than physical apearance would be one of the last and least likely symtoms to occur with the way our body works.

Sorry DNA splicing is an interesting subject to me. To think we could enhance our own bodies, to become healthier and stronger, will happen not long down the line with the advancements of treatments today. t:

If you're interested in developmental biology, you should look up (or volunteer) at a lab that works with fruit flies. We know their genome inside and out, and can do some very specific (and sometimes very terrible) things to them.

Like we can make them grow legs on their heads instead of antenna.

Another one is where we make them unable to develop any legs at all, and the adults have to be cut out of their pupae to be studied.

They don't involve splicing, just mutations at very specific points on the genome. Either way, we'd go through a lot of "dud embryos" before successfully doing the same for humans.

IMO that stems from our very physical structure. We evolved to walk upright, so our jaws are built a certain way because of that, and our neck muscles are fairly weak. Our shoulder joints (or lack thereof) are fairly useless because of that too. If we were to be stronger IMO, we'd have to get down on all four legs again, and something tells me we won't want to give up our opposable thumbs.

Also, the exoskeleton of insects (main reason why they are so strong relative to their body size) doesn't scale up very well. If there was an ant the size of a human, it wouldn't be able to hold up its own weight.

I am black and a long time Spidey fan. I wouldn't be aganist seeing different takes on Spidey on screen in the coming years ( black, Asian, Hispanic, etc). But I highly doubt we will see a spider man who isn't white on screen. Given that fact that comic fans would be in outrage like they did because Miles is black and Hispanic. And unfortunately, a large majority of comic book fans or close minded or simply racist.

I wouldn't mind seeing a non-white Spider-Man on screen that wasn't Peter Parker. I didn't mind Samuel Jackson playing Nick Fury since the character isn't really that "big" and, well... Jackson is awesome (however, he just feels like Samuel Jackson playing himself).

If they decided to make a movie that took place in the 60s, and made Peter Parker African-American, that could be really interesting.

Anyway, I watched Spider Man 1 again recently, and I forgot that they mentioned Eddie Brock by name during a scene in the daily bugle. Seems strange that they didn't make reference to the fact that Brock was working at the bugle before Pete in Spider Man 3.

They said the name "Eddie," not Eddie Brock. In the SM1 novel, Eddie Brock does make an appearance, but I consider that "unofficial." Eddie is such a common name, that they could have been talking about anyone.

As opposed to completely rewriting a character, why can't we focus on seeing takes of Spider-Men that already exist? I wouldn't mind seeing a Spider-Man Noir movie, or even a Spider-Man 2099 one.

I don't really know where I fall on this issue anymore. As a black man I'd LOVE to see someone my color underneath that mask but at the same time, I don't think it's necessary because the thing that's so iconic about spider-man is the mask and you can project whatever race you want to underneath it. I'm coming around on the idea of James Bond being black though so maybe I will on this too
