Age of Ultron The Avengers 2! The Official News and Speculation Thread - Part 47

This is one of the earliest reactions tonight, I've read it several times, and I'm still not sure what the hell it's saying. It's like trying to decode RDJ's fast-paced mumbling of hip jargon in his interviews. :hehe:
Means it's got a lot going on and he was overwhelmed but in a good way.

Yeah there's no way. Empire Strikes Back wasn't as "fun" as A New Hope. But that doesn't mean it was worse.

So true! We keep making the Avengers/Star Wars comparison, but I'm pretty sure the initial reaction of many critics to ESB was that it was darker and not as fun as ANH. Fast forward 35 years, and it is regarded by many to be the best film in the series (to date).

Personally, I'm excited about these reactions! Sure, there are a few who don't seem as enthused as others, but that's the case with every film. As we know, film is subjective, so what works for one doesn't necessarily work for the next. But, the vast majority of the reactions are favorable...even from those who feel it isn't quite as good as the first. I'm glad to see that, but ultimately the opinion that matters most to me is my own. April 30th can't get here soon enough!

A little OT while we wait for the next set of reactions, anyone else as excited as me for Daredevil in about 50 minutes?! If only i didn't have to go to work.

I wouldn't be too quick to jump on the Avengers 2 = ESB bandwagon just yet, however im also quite sure that critics back then were less (but not by much) cynical and nitpicky, but when you have a huge fan pleasing easy to like film like Avengers that doesn't take many risks, you are kinda stuck, because you either do the EXACT same thing and get damned for it, or go different and get crapped on either way.

People are going to want different things from this movie, I seriously doubt it's going to get as much universal (somewhat undeserved) love from fans this time around, but the ones who DO love it, I'm betting they'll like it more than the first.

I get the "phase" part. Phase 1 was 5 movies, phase 2 was IM3, Thor 2, Cap, and gotg..AoU is it's own "phase", that coupled with someone saying "epic" doesnt describe it in scale, it must be monstrous

I see no issues with following the thoughts of reviewers that tend to like or dislike the same kinds of movies that you like and dislike, and if they hype it, then I know its going to be good.

Just saying....people walked out of green lantern early screenings singing its praises

Just saying.

Well based on the reactions i'm going go the RT score will be 75-80%.

These early screeners are nearly always geeks as well and so for them if it's too much but still fun, then for others it's just going to be too much.

I think not being as 'fun' might become problematic for the people hoping this would outgross the first movie.

The 'fun' is what made even the casuals viewer come back for seconds an thirds.

Tonal shifts are fine, it's whether or not the movie suffers under the weight of plot/character convolutedness...

And suddenly, CIVIL WAR and INFINITY WAR seem to be a lot more problematic... Oy.

Hmmm...I'm tempted to think that as well. However, since I personally tend to think in baby steps these days, I'm really only focused on how I'm getting to work on time tomorrow.

But, to speak to the point, CW and IW do seem as though they will be huge projects with big casts and many audience expectations. I think Disney/Marvel can handle them with satisfying results. The tweets have, on the whole, been highly positive so I'm gonna stick with that.

Disney is super confident so that's something to keep in mind.

Well yeah the film is still going to make way over a billion, so why wouldn't they be. Besides they allowed early twitter reactions to TDW.

Good to know, it was a weird one.

So far the most positive thing to me are the critiques saying this works because it's a different kind of movie than the first, which really catches my ear and makes me interested in what they've done.

Also the compliments on the third act are nice since there have been shades of the first movie's climax in the trailers that I wouldn't want feeling redundant. Few things a movie can do better than stick the landing.

It's why I despite that term for superhero movies "fun", that sorta thing can be used to describe anything, but it's usually used for films that allow humour and levity throughout, as if anything remotely dramatic makes it less "fun" and therefore a lesser film.

Put it this way (and this is a gross exaggeration of an example), I'll never find Schindler's list a fun film (and i hope most people don't) but it's easily one of the best films ever made, so point being...i wouldn't take the whole "it's not as fun as the first" comments too seriously.

Unless it's genuinely a dull film haha.

Did those same people change their tune when they had their reviews? Or did they have positive reviews as well?

I'm encouraged by some of the thoughts that the third act in the film is the best...in other films, the third act tends to be the weakest.

I wouldn't know, I was largely absent for that mess.

As was I, I have a couple of people that I enjoy their reviews, and they generally like the movies I like. So they having great reaction to this screening is entirely positive for me.

If I recall correctly, they weren't even critics.

Oh yeah? Well there you go..

Everyone has their goto critics, who they read and enjoy their reviews, if those guys are excited by it, then thats great for me.

It's too much. Good and entertaining but too much.

It doesn't mean it's too much - it's just packed in and concentrated. It was all part of a very positive tweet from Esquire (not a fan boy blog).
