it insists upon itself :o
lol

TDK "transcends" CBM's because it was barely a CBM
someone I saw called it basically "Heat with costumes" and I thought that was extremely accurate
it's a crime thriller, that just so happens to have Batman and Joker in it

so it's a tossup, do you say "f the comics, let's make a (insert genre)"
or do you say, "let's try to give it this type of flavor, while still hitting some of the iconic comic moments"
TWS did the latter, while TDK did the former
and they worked equally as well, imo

Never thought of it quite that way, but I can see it. Though I must say TDK was IMO way better than Heat (thought it was kind of a dog).

Now that I'm channeling Martin Scorcese, I wonder if "Goodfellas" could have worked with a Superhero like a Daredevil or a Batman. lol. Now that I mention it, that's a movie I thought was one of the great crime movies and probably one of the great ones period. IMO better than TDK, but, I have to say, I enjoyed TDK more. Go figure......

Completely agree with this

------------

Btw 44 Tv spots already lol is this some kind of record?

TDK will definitely be remembered as one of the greats. It was the CBM that transcended CBMs.

I think Marvel got the closest with TWS but obviously Avengers is also a thing to behold in being the first true cinematic crossover and a great film at that.

Honestly... TDK went so far past the Comic Book Genre, i barely consider it one.. it's much more of a crime-thriller than a super-hero film imo..

I love it for what it is, it's a great film. But I have a hard time thinking of it as a just simply a "comic book movie"

that all being said, it's probably why I love Gotham so much.. it's like they merged Nolan with the 90s Animated series in a way.

Anyone seen the trailer for the Vacation movie with Hemsworth? That was hilarious.:funny: Also it was my first time heating him with an American accent.

Rubbish. Noone is required to choose a side. Nothing wrong with preferring one over the other or generally liking one company's products over another but the only ones required to choose a side are giving too much importance to playground matters rather than just enjoying what they happen to enjoy.

He had one in Star Trek too if you've seen that one.

Just got back from seeing Age of Ultron, thought it was fantastic!

There's not ONE movie out there in ANY genre that will be PERFECT to EVERYONE.
NOW I'm hearing that it's FEMINISTS that were harassing Joss on twitter. I don't know what to think about people now a days. WHY harass someone over FANTASY?

I'll be honest: I don't think the vast majority of the alleged "feminist outrage" going after Whedon is actually from women at all, let alone feminists. If I had to bet money, I'd say the vast majority is opportunistic: people who have grudges against Whedon, deciding that they have an opening to call the avowedly feminist director a misogynist, and are going for it.

heh watch the newer Red Dawn and Cabin in the Woods, both are Hems' American accent.

to ME he OVER pronounces his R's. lol NOT making fun of any one of you WITH accents (my Chicago accent sticks out like a sore thumb in Arkansas)

Still, Kind of reminds me of a scene you will NEVER see in any Directors cut of Arnold's Conan the Barbarian that I saw back when it first hit the screens.
There was a scene in the orgy room where the one girl with that boiling HAND stew/soup is walking down the steps to dump the scalding stuff ONTO Conan, and he guts her. There was all kinds of outrage for the one scene so it was cut from the movie.

the point is, if you do an actual PERIOD piece like that, you have to ignore what actually went on back then

Didn't see it. What kind of American accent? Back East? Southern? I'm sure everyone knows that people in California don't have accents. People know that...right?

Hear hear!! I just want to go see a good movie or read a good book (Anyone ever read War and Peace, David Copperfield, Les Miserables, etc.?). I grew up on Marvel Comics and love the characters, but also think TDK was terrific and am not interested in pitting one against the other. If someone else wants to do that, head on, but I'm interested in entertainment and could care less whether it's Cameron, Scorcese, Gunn, Wright, Nolan....and so on for Disney, Fox, Sony, blah blah blah....you make an interesting movie and I'll go see it.

I agree with the bolded statements. But it is just classic tribalism in action. Nowadays we call it being a fanboy. Everyone is required to pick a side and you can never admit any faults from your group. MCU is not the only one to illicit this reaction. Just look at Nolan fans.

I try to remain objective in these things but it is difficult in this type of environment. One of the reasons I don't post that much here is that even though I am an unabashed Marvel fanboy even that is not enough because I am still required to choose between Marvel Studios and Fox. And apparently even if I choose the former now I have to choose between directors and producers.

Ah man, if Fox & Trank's FF ends up a critically acclaimed picture it'll be as if a nuclear bomb went off in the hearts of the Marvel Studios disciples.

And if it makes money...I predict mass suicides.

What are you exactly trying to prove? As far as I'm concerned the more good SH movies, the better. And FF is not Trank's movie anymore according to latest news.

Huh, any chance Picard could be a sock puppet for our old friend Alexei?

Please don't say that name here. AB was allowed to befoul the TA forum for far too long before he was finally banned. You'll know he's back for sure if the "Feige is Satan" trope reappears. Dude had such a sick hatred for Marvel's chief that he's probably rolling over in his virtual grave over the studio's continued success. :loco:

Even if it did both it wouldnt change anything. Just look at DOFP. They would say it wasnt accurate to the comics or find some other reason to hate it.

Its the nature of fanboyism.

DOFP was decent but I will never get the hype. It doesn't annoys me that it made money, because people is free to like it as much as they want.
My problem is it got critical acclaim, when for me it was inferior in all aspects to AoU. Maybe it was due to the compulsory "historical context which adds nothing to the plot" Singer thing? It makes the movie look so deep and serious :whatever:

I feel exactly the same way about about the first Avengers movie. It's good, but it isn't anywhere near the hype it gets. AoU then again deserves all the hype and would deserve more critical acclaim.

But that's just it, these are opinions. Critics have opinions too so some movies will stand out more to them. Imo DOFP deserved all the praise it got because it was glorious, and especially compared to AoU. It isn't as fun but it had some serious depth and i felt like it was a lot more emotional, which is important.

Going to see AoU again next week!

To quote Ice....Rubbish. The people who are in the box you, evidently (ie "mass suicides" and, yes, I get that this isn't to be taken literally), put most of us in are a fringe element..."Marvel can't do anything wrong" groupies. Most of us are rooting for Marvel just like we'd root for virtually anyone to make a cool movie.

I suppose I could be wrong, but there's a concept in psychology called "Projection". We tend to put traits on to others that we see in ourselves because, obviously, we're normal people and a lot like most others (or so we tell ourselves). You're entitled to your opinion, but, in this case, I think you're way off base when it comes to the larger group of people (and, yes, I could be projecting).

I'm a huge MCU fan, but I of course want to see other studios succeed. A string of poor quality comic book movies will burst the bubble. Other studios producing good movies only helps the genre.

No, screw this.

I'm not making my comment until the next page. You guys go first for once. Been dealing with this all day, lol.

Indeed! I'm so happy we are getting tons of CBM's at the same time. Ten years ago i couldn't even have dreamed of something like this. Marvel, Fox and DC are all welcome in my books.

Looking at it from other angle, we may be closing to a saturation of the market. I don't know if we want that.
If the GA stops being interested in them due to genre fatigue, they will stop being profitable and studios will drop them.

I'm really fearful of the genre not keeping its good health until IW1 and 2 arrive :csad:
