The Avengers The Avengers Critics Reviews Thread - Part 2

First off, this movie right now is the most anticipated thing in my life. I even set up a 5 day vacation for it with my family.

Now, I'm just throwing my two cents at all of the accolades towards The Avengers from the critics. I can't help but see that they are just riding on that Joss Whedon is a directing God at the moment, and if someone, say like Michael Bay, had his name plastered on the exact same film, the movie would have been bashed like crazy. I'm just saying..........

If Michael Bay made this movie then it'd have sucked, and all the criticism would be warranted.

And probably for good reason. Do people still not know the difference between guys like Michael Bay and competent action-adventure movie directors?

I disagree, I think he's bashed for no reason. And, he just doesn't give a crap what the critics say, and neither do people who watch his movies (only movie I really didn't like from him would be TF3), but everything else, I pretty much loved. It's why he's my second favorite director, just behind Steven Spielberg, and slightly above Ridley Scott.

But, you all missed my point. Critics have their favorites and bias opinions, no matter which way you slice it. I really hope this movie lives up to it (Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Mission Impossible 4 were the only movies recently that I was on the same page as the critics)

Michael Bay does get alot more bashing than he deserves, but I wouldn't exactly call him a "good director" or anything.

A lot of Michael Bay's stuff is throwaway popcorn entertainment. With TF2 he hit a new low and I've heard TF3 is not much better.

Sometimes I like to be entertained with my brain on
Sometimes I like to be entertained with my brain off

But I always want to be entertained

Transformers 3 was quite a bit better in my opinion, I'd put it somewhere in the middle of TF1 & TF2.

Well, I'm not sure what's considered a "good director" anymore, but when I go to the movies, I go to have a good time and to escape from my life, and Michael Bay excels at that for me. My favorite movies from him are Transformers 1, The Island and Bad Boys 2.

Last year, movies that I did really like that the critics liked

Captain America
Super 8
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Mission Impossible 4.

Movies I agreed with the critics
Transformers 3

Movies I disagreed with the critics
Harry Potter Deathly Hallows part 2
Drive
X-Men, First Class
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

And I don't know what the hell is up with Thor. I liked it, some critics liked it, some bashed it, take it as you will.

There's nothing wrong with that. There's a lot of films I very much enjoyed by Michael Bay, even against my better judgment. I absolutely loved Armageddon, even as my brain was telling me that the story was rubbish and the acting, for the most part, was awful. Michael Bay has a legitimate talent for appealing to the baser instincts of humanity. No matter our background, we all like to watch pretty lights and explosions. I give Michael Bay an enormous amount of credit for his ability to direct action sequences. His audience may have to turn their brains off, but it takes intellect and understanding to make action scenes that get the audience involved.

Let's face facts, however. Human beings are easy to please when it comes to action films. MB may be particularly adept at getting people to enjoy his films, but even some very poor films can elicit the same reaction in lesser doses. If a critic's only standard is entertainment, then critics have little purpose. I trust critics to tell me not only am I going to be entertained, but will that film respect my intelligence, and perhaps, leave a lasting impression. In that, Michael Bay has always fallen completely flat. His films are, and always have been, completely disposable.

Transformers 3 had some good visual effects, but now I know what the OP stands for. OverPowered. I hate how they turned Shockwave into a weakling. Whatever!

Michael Bay is a good action director, he just can't put "heart" into the characters.

I think Michael Bay is batting.500. The Rock, Bad boys, Armmagedon, Transformers are all fun action movies. Transformers 2/3, Bad Boys 2, Pearl Harbor, and The Island all sucked. Thats not that bad. He should just stop making Transformers movies at this point and I bet he makes some fun action movies again.

If Michael Bay made this movie it would not have been good.

And it would be racist.

Michael Bay is good for juvenile humor (humping rats, humping robots, etc), a ton of slo-mo shots, explosions and incoherent action scenes butchered by fast editing topped off with corny characters. His act is beyond old by now. If he was directing The Avengers I wouldn't even give the movie a second thought.

Instead we get a movie that's actually funny and doesn't use low-brow, racist humor.

No one gets high on pot brownies and runs around tackling people.

I hate when people say "Michael Bay isn't good with character or story, but he's good at action." No -- he's good at crafting cool looking images. He's TERRIBLE at action. None of his action scenes have any sort of sense of geography, pacing, suspense, rhythm -- all the things a good action scene should have. Plus, since he's awful at character, they have the added debit of no characters you can root for, making it harder to care (I saw all three Transformers movies and I couldn't tell you Tyrese and Josh Duhamel's character's names, or anything about their personalities). His action scenes are pretty-looking special effects reels, nothing more.

qft.

I thought Transformers 2 was terrible with action. There were times I couldn't even tell what the hell was going on. Characters had ridiculous personalities. And of course MUDFLAP AND SKIDZ
