The Avengers The Avengers Critics Reviews Thread - Part 2

Karina Longworth gave a positive reveiw of IM1, and that's the only positive review of a superhero movie I can find of her. She did not review TDK, IM2 or Thor, but she gave bad reviews of XFC, GL, and CATFA

Heh... I don't think I've ever read a VV review for a movie unless they pan it.

I'm also very interested in Pajiba's TA review, if they review it. They usually have pretty good taste, and they give darn good snark too.

Can't win them all. It doesn't matter at this point though. The movie is good and I think everybody on the fence knows this by now. The RT score is now all about pride and d*** measuring with other fanboy cliques.

I pay as much attention to Village Voice as I do the MTV awards

Both have pathetic bias and are film snobs at either end of the spectrum

A film critic needs to appreciate ALL forms of cinema, otherwise their opinion means nothing

I like the Village Voice in general, but Karina Longworth is the very definition of a hipster film snob. I can predict her top ten lists in months out simply by seeing which hipster-approved directors have movies coming out that year (Noah Baumbach, Lars Von Trier, Wong Kar Wai, Gus Van Sant, etc.). She even put Trash Humpers, one the most pretentious and obnoxious films ever made, as her number one pick a couple years back. She's like the very worst people I went to film school with. Ugh.

Anyway, Time Out New York's review is up! 4/5. http://www.timeout.com/us/film/avengers

Love the first sentence! Joss Whedon month? More like Joss Whedon year.

US embargo is already over. It lifted on 4/30.

Also Village Voice liked Cloverfield ;) .

Have we had any good negative reviews yet? (I haven't read the last few)

Village Voice and the Miami one are actually fairly well-written and reasonable. Movieline to, to a lesser extent. The great thing is even the "negative" reviews tend to be in the 6/10, 3/5 range, with most of them saying that despite their slight dislike of the film overall, the humor, acting, and last act are pretty solid. Except for that ridiculous "fan the fire" review, I haven't seen anything particularly scathing -- no F's or 1-star reviews, or really anything close to that.

Cool, I'll check those out. There's nothing wrong with honest critics giving negative professional opinions and for me I enjoy seeing what they thought didn't work. RT just need to get rid of the other kind asap.

Yes that is good. 6/10 is about the highest mark you can get that can really be called a negative score. There's so many positives here that any reviewer should give acknowledgement to those alongside their criticisms.

I'm just saying Village Voice did like Cloverfield so that's one like thing they did like that was more of a . . . popcorn movie :D .

Spot on because if you look closely at the reviews on the metacritic website, there are no negatives, the one the fans have been critizing are mixed at worst(50/10) .

http://www.metacritic.com/movie/the-avengers-2012/critic-reviews

Movieline-60

The Guardian-60(don't know why they have chosen this instead of Peter's 4/5 review conspiracy ? next time peter better put his review first)

Boxoffice Magazine -60 (The infamous first negative review NOT!)

Village Voice -50

Miami Herald - 50

75 score (17 reviews) Yes it a good score but Very disappointing because it was at 80 before negative (opps i mean mixed) reviews poured in. Hopefuly we have heard the last of them and there are like 20 top critic reviews still to come Ebert, Berardinelli,.. etc.

Cloverfield was awesome.
It was awesome first time. I didn't really want to watch it again soon after though. And the monster was great when they kept it hidden. Full frontal it was a geek. :csad:

The thing I hate about Rotten Tomatoes is that it's too harsh on movies. There should be a middle ground between fresh and rotten. Are any of the reviews critical enough of Avengers to to consider it a 'rotten' or bad movie? No, but they are still put into the same basket as Jack & Jill and other pieces of ****.

What's in between fresh and rotten though?

Stale? Day old? I mean both those have negative connotations as well.

Maybe say . . . "aged" instead of fresh?

Even without RT, reviewers are lazy bastards lol. Many of them only have 4 'baskets' anyway.
