The Avengers The Avengers Critics Reviews Thread - Part 2

Someone at AICN started that rumor, threw in "not cinematic enough" and sourced it to a possibly mythical studio exec who had seen the film. Those slams were picked up and parroted ad nauseam by the weak-minded here and elsewhere. Now that the film is out, the "TV movie" criticism has evaporated. I wonder if Beaks will acknowledge it.
Beaks wasn't impressed with the movie's look visually and he does think it does look like TV in his review. Not sure if he was the one that started or fabricated it but I think maybe some one saw some footage that wasn't fully touched up and made the conclusion that way.

But Beaks seems to be the only one expressing it in a review of the movie.

If he's still making that ridiculous claim he is an idiot.

I can't really bash anything I'm Pre-programmed to love Superman and Batman by default. :oldrazz:

Interrupting yet another thread derailment with a review of The Avengers:

‘The Avengers’ Review: A High-Octane Superhero Extravaganza: 8.5/10

With Joss Whedon‘s Marvel movie mashup, The Avengers, the superhero movie finally lives up to its paper and ink counter part. In comic books, crossover events are common. Superheroes appear alongside other superheros all the time but, with a minor exception here and there, that tried and true comic book staple never made it to the big screen. In a fantasy-based world, the superhero team up film has long been the pinnacle of “what if?”

The Avengers not only makes that fanboy fantasy a reality, the high-octane superhero extravaganza delivers on almost every level with well-rounded characters, plenty of humor and jaw-dropping action. A few things do get left out in the wake of all that excitement but odds are you won’t really care. The Avengers is as fun as movies come and fans who’ve been waiting for a superhero team up on the big screen will leave the theater satisfied.

Oh wow! Just saw a TV spot on Adult Swim with quotes from the US critics!

******ANNOUNCEMENT********ANNOUNCEMENT********

This is the AVENGERS forum....if you want to talk about Batman, he has his own forum.

DO NOT.....I repeat....DO NOT try and start or continue any Marvel VS DC wars.

That's great news! Disney has three more days to flood the airwaves with positive buzz about The Avengers before it opens. After the weekend, they can hit us up with the "#1 Movie in the Universe!" spots and more critics' quotes.

Is it strange that I'm looking forward to these ads more than I have with any other movie? :woot:

Not strange at all! And I've seen about 7 different commercials for the avengers today. Its just wild

And wow again! Just saw another spot that uses US critic quotes!

Both of these ended on a quote that says, "The best superhero movie of all time!"

I was just saying earlier today how Sony constructed a critics TV spot for Spider-man 2 and Disney should be doing the same for The Avengers. Their marketing team is certainly on their game.

Just wanted to add that the first spot had this cool little alteration to the 360 shot of the Avengers where they added the various publication logos (Time, Hollywood Reporter, Variety and I think Newsweek were some of them) to the background.

I'm seeing tv spots everywhere..lol...and i'm loving it

xeno, I say this in the nicest possible way since I don't know you, but I think you're being paranoid. Respectable critics like Beaks simply do not start false rumors to "take down" movies. And he hadn't even seen the movie when that info was released (no critic had). It was just what he had heard from someone who had seen it, which at the time was just people inside Marvel. And, when he did see it, he liked the movie. Just because he didn't like it as much as you or I doesn't mean he has some vendetta against it. That's just silly.

Just saw that one play during a commercial break for The Tonight Show.

Where did I ever say Beaks had "a vendetta" against The Avenger? I said he was an idiot for saying that it looks like a TV movie and I stand by that. I'm not disagreeing with Beaks merely because he didn't like the movie as much as I do. Frankly, I don't care about that. What I do take issue with is the fact that he said he thinks the quality is that of a television show. You've seen it, I've seen it, millions of other people have seen it. Does his criticism strike you as valid? Certainly no other critic seems to agree with him, not even the ones who gave the film bad reviews.

No, I think that's totally invalid, but I have read a few other critics who thought that it looked TV-ish too.

I thought you were saying that Beaks made up the info from Marvel insiders about it not looking cinematic? If you weren't saying that, deepest apologies. I read too fast.

To be fair, the early word AICN reported was extremely positive. TA was said to be filled with humour, heart and excitement - albeit Whedon was apparently lacking a cinematic eye.

I can see why the execs would come to that conclusion, considering that they must have seen a lot of non-fx, indoor scenes, which I thought did at times look a little uncinematic, whereas the big, amazing outdoor stuff was probably still being completed at ILM and Weta.

Beaks takes issue with Avengers for "playing it safe" while touting Ang Lee's Hulk as underrated.

So I guess he'd prefer a more experimental and unfocused Avengers movie that can barely be considered profitable. No thank you, Beaks.

I'll take the Avengers movie that is widley embraced by both fanboys and the public and makes over a billion dollars because it is so satisfying to the masses over your experimental, commercial and critical bomb that potentially destroys the future of Marvel Studios.

Yeah, I don't think it's a big deal. I've seen 4 reviews of TA on AICN and 3 were glowing - and if Harry's isn't equally positive it'll be the #1 shock of the year.

I don't think avengers is the best superhero movie of all time (I've been more engaged with other superhero movies (TDK, X:FC, IM1, SM2) but what I will say is it is the most FUN superhero movie of all time. no question about it. like taking a comic book that has splash pages for every page and putting it on the big screen.

Beaks' review was every bit as incoherent as he claims The Avengers was. The movie's humor escapes him and he seems to have missed (or dismissed) the character development throughout the film. And he holds up Lee's Hulk, which failed on every level and had an climax that was completely incomprehensible, as a great example of what comic movie should be. If that's an example of his taste in films I'm not surprised he was unimpressed by The Avengers.
