The Batman Reboot Casting Thread - Part 1

I love Nostalgia Critic's commentary on the Burton Batman films, and how Keaton excelled because he was the one Batman who could smile and still look super threatening. Criminals knew they were screwed when his Batman smiled at them. It was awesome.

I think Bentley has potential to pull off the same. He has the intense eyes that could convey so much through the mask.

Marvel? Yes. DC, he's Bruce Wayne. At least, to me.
Honestly, I like him, but Batman doesn't seem his personality fit. I could see him pulling off a great Bruce Wayne, but I see him as a better Mister Fantastic actually. I think he's both rugged but also kind of a goof, kind of this dopey guy, slightly insecure dude beneath the surface. He has good comedic timing with all that. Like in Bridesmaids and you see him do it a bit in Mad Men. I think people just think Don Draper - Bruce Wayne though, when that's really not the case, and I don't think he encapsulates the qualities of Batman quite the way that say Wes Bentley, Michael Keaton (has) or even perhaps Lee Pace could do. Not that I'd mind him being cast as Batman, just that I feel he's better used on other characters.

You need to stop looking at an actor's personality for roles.

Sarcasm?

I mean I guess I would be fine with that, at least visually speaking he looks the part. Would he be good for it? I mean I'm not getting much off of True Blood although I'm not it's biggest fan. Maybe he'd be fine, but I doubt his overall abilities as an actor, and I'm sure it would be a step down from Bale.

:funny: Of course he does. He also wants to be the new Punisher.

I thought he would've been decent for a new Supes, but Batman? Nah.

Haha.

He's just an attention ****e.

He did the same thing with Superman.

No way he's going from ''Magic Mike' to a Nolan-produced Batman film.

He's stuck to playing sleezy roles.

Love him, but he's not right for Supes or Bats.

I say use some CG to make him appear shorter and cast him as Wolverine. :o:up:

Oh yeah, saying you want to play a role makes you a total attention ****e. :whatever:

He is a huge comic fan though, that's why he took the role of Flash Thompson. So it's understandable he wants to play a Superhero. Practice a Russian accent and maybe he could be the new Colossus.

Check out his interviews on TMZ after losing Superman, calling Cavill "some British guy."

And of course, there's his supposed excuse why he didn't get Superman:

"My schedule for 'True Blood' kept me out of playing Superman, and that was the only reason why I couldn't do it."

He is full of it.

I'd approve.
Not at all. An actor's personality means nothing, its about the character they play.

Eh, it'd be a small step if anything.

Well, I think he just wants to get into the comic movies, and I'm all for actors who have an interest in being involved in them, especially when there's a role(s) they can fit.

He would be pretty great for Wolvie, better than Jackman. And if they don't shorten Wolvie's height for the movies, no one had a huge problem with Jackman.

Unless he goes all Sean Young ala Catwoman, I don't think he's an attention ****e.

I wouldn't call Sean Young an attention ****e, just out of her mind bonkers.

Joe M gets a lot of sh** for whatever reason, but I like him on True Blood and I think he could have made a good Superman and possibly a good Batman. I can also see why he might make a good Wolverine, though I think Christian Kane from Leverage would be a better Wolvie.

Also... I'm really, REALLY not getting all the Wes Bentley love. Has he been really good in anything other than American Beauty? If so, could someone please recommend something? Because fine, he's got Bruce Wayne's eyebrows, but that's about all I can say for him, looks-wise.

I don't know that Jon Hamm's characters on television and movies are anything like he is in real life. That's what I base it on. I really don't think he'd make that great of a Batman outside of his appearance. There's something very light hearted about a lot of his performances, and he's got good comic timing which really doesn't help him much playing Batman, but would in other roles. None of that has anything to do with his actual personality. Although, honestly, I think most actors are just people who are attractive enough and likeable enough people will pay to see him onscreen. I don't necessarily believe Hollywood is about the craft of acting.

TBH all Cavill had was really The Tudors and being cast in Immortals, when he was cast as Superman. Immortals wasn't released yet.

All Bale had was American Psycho and maybe Empire of the Sun, his other roles prior to BB were really nothing of merit.

All Bentley has is American Beauty, Hunger Games and his two upcoming Terrence Malick pictures in production.

He is more or less in line, career-wise, with Nolan's other 'unknowns' and in the right Hollywood circle.

He was also a previously considered candidate for an earlier Batman film development project. Bale and Cavill were considered for earlier iterations of their respective characters as well. He just seems in line with what has come before.

He isn't too big a star for this role, or too completely obscure.

You're aware that his most famous role to date is not remotely goofy or light-hearted? And it's pretty much the role of a dark, brooding, successful man with secrets? That's why people fancast him. Not because of his appearance, but because he's basically playing Bruce Wayne Without a Cause on weekly basis.

Agreed. I didn't mean to imply that he's just attention-****ing like others here are suggesting. I was just pointing out that he doesn't specifically want to play Batman, he just really wants to play a superhero.

And to be honest, I'd like to see him in a superhero movie. Like I said, I think he would've made a decent Supes, and I also really like him for Hawkman. I just don't think Batman would be the best fit for him. Wouldn't be an awful choice or anything (and I'd even prefer him to Bentley)...but it just doesn't seem like the right fit to me.

I remember you were for him in the Casting Superman thread; wanna know how sadomasochistic I am? I reread that thread fully the other day.

But Yeah, I'd like him as Hawkman as well. I think there's only ya few roles I wouldn't want him in; Batman is not one of them.

I'm still kind of all about Pace or Bentley for the younger route.

Bruce Wayne - Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender (i cant give up hope yet!) But Wes Bentley definately has the look, especially since he's in a movie with Bale they'll probably be looking at him more now. Not that it means anything.

Gordon - Bryan Cranston

Alfred- Malcolm McDowell

Lucius Fox - Denzel Washington (in 10 years it'll be perfect)

Riddler - Joaquin Phoenix (he'd play a fantastic Black Mask as well)

Harvey Bullock - Michael Madsen

Black Mask - Viggo Mortensen

...Ian Somerhalder (Too old for Nightwing but he'd be great. Whoever says he should be Batman is off their rocker)
...Don't like Poison Ivy but Christina Hendricks would of nailed it if it was done in the next few years.
...Penguin definately needs to be in this reboot. I just have no idea who to cast without sounding too obvious.
...Mr Freeze would be a nice surprise but i doubt they would include him for another friggin 20 years. Shame.
...Hush would be ideal whenever they decide to do the origin story once again. By that time i'm sure 1 or 2 more actors will have been Batman. I say save Hush for the origin and u could re-introduce Selina Kyle in there as well. But not quite Catwoman yet. It'll be a long ways off so casting is pointless.

Director - Darren Aronofsky (for Fassbender or Bentley)
-Nicolas Winding Refn or Ruben Fleischer (for Gosling)

As far as Michael Fassbender goes, her's better off as Hush.

And I think the Batman, Inc. costume looks appropriate for a movie costume.
