The Batman Reboot Casting Thread - Part 1

I actually think Somerhalder could work. Though they probably would have to cast a big name villian.

Christian Bale was not a household name when he was cast as Batman. That's actually his big break. American Psycho has a cult following, but many people don't care for it, and it's popularity spiked because of Batman.

Umm, not so sure about that - BB certainly propelled him to the next level but he was well known due to AS, Shaft, Reign of Fire, Equilibrium, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, and the Machinist. AS and the Machinist may well have cult followings but both were surrounded by immense publicity in mainstream media - with AS getting criticism/interest for adapting such a violent and notorious book and the Machinest out there mainly because of Bale's extreme weight loss.

In short, those movies [as well as the appearances in the others] mean that the GA certainly knew who Bale was before BB and it wasnt his big break, just his biggest movie at that point.

Wasn't there a huge fan movement online asking that Bale be cast as Batman?

All of those movies are basically for film buffs. They didn't have a lot of noteriety outside nerd-film geek culture. They were basically blips on the screen in terms of box office, and many of them did not have full releases. So really Batman is his first major film outing that people actually care about. Since then you've had Prestige, The Dark Knight, The Fighter and Terminator: Salvation. Those are far bigger films. I mean all the others you listed, frankly, you probably wouldn't have known those films existed until someone told you about them. No one was saying hey let's go see Captain Corelli's Mandolin if they had a life. Most of those movies you listed he's not even the star (Reign of Fire and Shaft, no one thinks of those as Bale movies. His role was relatively small in RoF from what I remember.). The General Audience really wasn't that aware of him in Batman, and if they did it was for American Psycho and not much else.

I... wasn't? I was just asking if my recollection was correct.
Yeah, I think there was. Although so did Henry Cavill, and he's really not done much outside of television, and I'm sure that'll change big time now (it already is).

Before Batman Begins, the general audience, while not clueless about Christian Bale, he wasn't really a household name. They knew about him, but didn't know much about him.

Batman Earth One looks like Wes Bentley.

Hi,

I know that a lot of people won't believe what I will say but in opinion, George Clooney is still the best option as Bruce Wayne/Batman....

It's brilliant to have this discussion with someone, like my best friend, who has never read a Batman Comic in his life whose only opinion stems from the film history. I have maintained that if you gave Val Kilmer and ESPECIALLY Clooney role in Burton's Batman they would have done just a well or better than Keaton. That is no slight to the Keaton, just a point. It's actually unfortunate to me that Clooney was wasted on such a ****** interpretation of Bats because now he will certainly NEVER don the Cowl but I actually agree, if you were to give him a J. Nolan or Goyer quality script, Clooney would fit pretty well. I would say now he is definitely TOO old to do such a thing and I think now a days he is a little too much of a nice guy in the spot light. Back in the mid-90s there was no doubt that the Cloon-ster was an all around bad ass.... So if you are still in there, I'd like you to know I agree with everything you said :)

But since I think he is too old for Bats at this point and a little too nice, I have to say Jon Hamm is still my pic for Batman. Jon Hamm or Patrick Wilson!

Bentley edges out the others for me for a couple reasons:

- He was Aronofsky's choice for Batman, along with Christian Bale

- He's in the same place (career-wise) that Bale was before Batman Begins.

- He's acted in this genre before, most recently with Hunger Games.

- Much like Bale, he overcame great dark stuggles in his personal life. He could bring at intensity into his Batman.

- I think he has the potential to do what Keaton did, play a Bruce who's hard to read and always up to something beneath the surface.

- He's the right age for a reboot trilogy and the JL films.

Eh I just don't like the look of Bentley for Bats. I could possibly see him in some kinda role in the DC/verse but not Bats. I have always personally thought of Bruce and Bats as being a little older than the rest of the Justice League, minus perhaps Green Arrow, so I go back to my stance that I want someone who passes for mid-30s Bentley looks like MAYBE Late 20s, to me anyway. though I suppose by time they actually get around to this, he will be in my preferred age range, so who knows.

Anson Mount who is the lead in AMC's Hell On Wheels would'nt be a bad choice for batman

Go back a few pages.

I agree he's great, but he seems a bit too small time for a project like this.

AMC's Hell on Wheels is his only project of credibility. He's got no worthwhile film work.

He's my #2 favorite.

Thanks Minus Shock for your support. Good to see I'm not the only one who think that way but I agree with you, Clooney is too old now. I also agree about Jon Hamm but I also think that Michael Fassbender could do the job too (even if he's playing Magneto). But my second choice after Clooney would be Jim Caviezel. He almost looks like the Jim Lee version (in my opinion of course)

As much as I want to see Fassbender in everything, I don't think Bats works quite right. Plus I want to see him become the ULTIMATE Mags. It's funny because I have always thought Caviezel had the chops and if you watch his show, Person of Interest, he pretty much is Batman. About every scene he is in I utter "I'm Batman". Finch is Oracle. It's really like a Batman show haha.

Hey, after Dredd inevitably bombs, Karl Urban might be a good choice.
