Brazil can do big numbers for certain films. Hope it's popular there.

It opened big in South Korea. Looks like they weren't as racist as some people thought.

Oh nice. SK is a potentially big market too.

Not too shabby.

I'm real curious how it will do in Eastern Europe or South America.
it not
I'm not too familiar with how these places are with B/C list superheroes, but it will show the power of the Marvel Brand and the product of the film to get those folks adoring the film.

Nope, It will show the power of black films, it's a lie back films don't sell. It will do will every where.

Can't wait to hear some actuals from the U.S. market. Not too far away from opening midnights.

Everyone stop the bickering. I am going to do a more deep dive into this thread when I have more time, but deleted some posts already. If the argument keeps going, I will issue infractions.

Thank you.

I have read 4 pages worth of posts, and I have this to say:

I have a zero tolerance policy for racism. But, I also have a zero tolerance policy for people being accused of being trolls/racist with no facts to back up their claim or as a default argument. So, if you think a post is racist or raically insensitive, report it so WE the moderators can make that determination. If you derail a thread crying wolf when their is no wolf, then it is you who is trolling, and I will be infracting YOU.

So, from now on, stop calling each other racists, trolls, etc. Report controversial posts so the MODERATORS can take action.

If this becomes a bad trend, I will issue infractions as well as ban specific people from this thread temporarily.

Thank you.

First of all, I'm NOT saying that ALL Black films don't do well at the box office. However, I am saying that HISTORICALLY MOST Black films don't do well internationally (JUMANJI,the FAST & THE FURIOUS films, and a few other films being the exception) MAINLY do to racism in many international markets (especially the Asian markets). I also specifically stated in my post that this seems to be changing with the success of movies like JUMANJI and the FAST & THE FURIOUS films.

And for the record (in case you decide to jump to conclusion and get it all twisted) I am NOT saying (a) that Hollywood should make fewer Black films or (b) that Black films not doing well internationally is a justification and a valid excuse for not making a lot of Black films.

Unless i'm misunderstanding, please explain how are Jumani, Fast Furious are considered 'all- black " ?
just because a movie has one or more than one black actor doesn't make it a black film.
for example- the movie "John Q' featuring Denzel W. has several black actor/actress in it, but the movie is not about blacks or black culture.

Let it die man. It's a non issue what one person thinks. Never in the history of ever has a forum post changed someones mind.

Black Panther will be a breakthrough mile stone, I elaborated In an earlier thread what I thought what will make BP so unique and appealing to draw the huge attention and excitement it is currently amassing.
But it will also add to the element as a Black Superhero, this high a level 'wow " intrigue. I think it do for the black superhero theme what Wonder Woman has did for the female superhero theme.

Don’t get me wrong, as I thought Blade was a breakthrough in it's own
right as a popular black superhero in it's own solo film, but it's just near
on the scale level of hype, anticipation and cultural superhero rage that the Black Panther is about to become. – And just on it’s first original film at that.

As popular as Captain America is among the Marvel Universe, the Black Panther sensation is about to surpass it, even before it hits the theater screens.

Die? really? I was looking for clarification and a better understanding, not summing up any type finger pointing or accusation. this was a sensible question and by example.
I don't see the reason for getting defensively guilty. how can our diversed cultures ever better communicate and understand one another if we cannot present exchanged thoughts and views if we cannot intelligently discuss them ?

Mainly because the box office thread is probably not the best spot for it, especially considering how sidetracked this thread got.

I'm currently hearing all of the box office opening weekend predictions of Black Panther $150 million range in the US.

But heck, I am really wanting BP to far exceed those projected BO numbers and rake in and surpass Iron Man 3 record numbers for a solo superhero movie film..and I think that number was $174 million.

I think there is so much more hype and critic praise that BP will build upon the curiousity and intrigue even with those that are not comic movie fanatics and they'll be so influenced to have to come see the movie anyway. Be a historical part of the big opening party.

Here's me predicting that Black Panther will amass a record $183 million on it's first weekend box office opening. :cwink:

Nope, It will show the power of black films, it's a lie back films don't sell. It will do will every where.

It'd be a stronger case if BP wasn't a Marvel film.

Imagine it was the same story (minus the superheroes/vibranium). Now that would be a true test of Black films.

But I believe it will bear lots of fruit for all. Especially more opportunities for Blacks in front of and behind the camera.

i'm just glad that a lot of the reviews ive seen and read mention wanting to rush back to see it again, that's great for longevity

I'm confident it will have a good rewatch rate.

One reason it's doing great in South Korea that's not being talked about is that it's a movie about a king. Royal families and palace intrigue is a big part of their historical dramas. I've watched a few myself.

Oh good to know. We have King Thor too now. :woot:

Asians are not racist. Do you ever see anything like a #BlackLivesMatter movement or an Apartheid regime in Asia at all?

Asians have ethnic pride (pro-Japanese, pro-Korean, pro-Filipino ).

This is quite a different beast than claiming racial supremacy.

I've seen images of Japanese stores (I believe) with signs informing customers that the establishment will only serve Japanese people. I have no reason to believe that this is a widespread phenomena. It's naïve to suggest that discrimination and racism doesn't occur in Asian countries.

I was including films that featured one or more lead Black characters, which both JUMANJI and the FAST & THE FURIOUS movies qualify as (Vin Diesel is part Black and most of the cast of the F&TF films are either Black or part Black). The leaked Sony emails even said Black lead films don't do well overseas.
