He wanted to do another Batman film with Nolan.

Close to TDKR's release there was a magazine (EMPIRE maybe?) that had a cover story on the film. In it Bale said he tried to talk Nolan into doing a fourth, but of course he said no.
He never tried to talk Nolan into making a fourth. That was never said. All he said was he would do a 4th if Nolan had a story to tell.

i really liked Bale as Batman, but his Batman would not have fit in with what Snyder wants to create

if from the very beginning Nolan was open to more sci-fi/fantasy elements, then no doubt Bale's Batman would have fit in with Snyder's Superman

he could have fit in just fine after tdk. batman begins was plenty fantastical.

After seeing begins I thought anything was possible, especially with superman returns coming out the next year

Ah, so young and naive

Remember that rumor about Affleck and Cavill not liking each other, because Cavill had won a weight lifting match?
It was the opposite ...

All of them had fantastical elements, it's still just way more grounded in Nolan's universe.

If MOS was made after Batman Begins, then yes, they could have joined them together, but Cavill wasn't ready, WB wasn't and Nolan wouldn't have had any interest. Once TDK came out it was quite clear that the world would need a lot more fantasy in order to link up with other super-powered beings/aliens.

I think with Nolan writing and producing MOS, it was thought and assumed by WB that Bale would return for Justice League, and when Nolan was adamant on not continuing, they offered Bale money to return anyway. I think that was definitely the thought process and goal. If not Bale, then Joseph Gordon-Levitt.

Seriously, 4 years ago, we were pretty damn close:

Brandon Routh - Superman
Christian Bale - Batman
Ryan Reynolds - Green Lantern

They needed to cast two more characters and it was all set. Then it all fell apart.

I think this highlights how quickly a plan could crumble immediately. Even if WB had the know-how to create a DCCU with these films (which they didn't), the middling reception to the last two would've killed all the hype moving into JL.

It echoes Gunn's sentiments that many companies are moving forward with shared universes before they've even established goodwill on the first movie alone.

It's hard to get super success and goodwill if the last movie was Batman & Robin (for Batman Begins) and Superman IV (for Superman Returns.)

In case of Marvel let's not assume that The Incredible Hulk and Captain America The First Avenger was incredibly sucessful movies.

We were never close.

Nolan made it clear from the beginning that he wanted his Batman to be standalone:

No other heroes.

Hence why there was a JLA film (Separate from both the TDK and SR universes) in development up until 2010 that featured Armie Hammer as Batman.

And even after that project was canceled (only due to the Writers Strike), Nolan never waivered on his stance to have his Batman be standalone, and for it to be 3 films only.

And thus, Warners (knowing what they had with Nolan's Batfilms), simply waited until his series was complete to start a brand new cinematic universe, with a new Batman; avoiding the issue of having 2 Batmen on film at the same time, as well as having to force Nolan to do so (which would've lead to him leaving completely).

.

When I saw the highlighted part, I instantly read "by many".

I miss Zyrson sometimes...

Things could've turned out so different

Superman: Brandon Routh
Batman: Christian Bale
Wonder Woman: Cobie Smulders
(Joss Whedon would've cast her in his WW movie)
The Flash: Ryan Reynolds (David Goyer would've cast him in his Flash movie)
Green Lantern: Jack Black (WB wanted to cast him for the comedic GL movie written by Robert Smigel)

and then the original intention for Miller's JL was to cast bigger names

here's the original wishlist

Superman: Brandon Routh
Batman: Christian Bale
Wonder Woman: Jessica Biel
Green Lantern: Columbus Short
The Flash: Ryan Reynolds
Aquaman: Leonardo DiCaprio
Martian Manhunter: Laurence Fishburne
Maxwell Lord: Mel Gibson
Talia Al Ghul: Scarlett Johannsson

Do you mean that was your wishlist? Because Miller's cancelled JL film, the cast was much different:

Anyway, Routh's Superman wouldnt have worked opposite Balebat IMO - their worlds were so different.

no problem. it was a really interesting project that had so much potential. early versions of the script featured Ra's from Batman Begins. Nolan nixed those plans and they went in a different direction

Not really, both worlds in BB and SR were fairly "grounded".

we all love affleck now and say what you want but intially this was good idea, these both worls were grounded, like very very grounded.

In some way yes, it could have been amazing to see Christian Bale play Batman, I would have loved it in some way, but I'm glad with what we are getting. If Rises ended differently and if Batman had better skills it could have worked.

i agree with everthing except skills part :D they could write him some skills :D
