Captain Marvel The Captain Marvel box office prediction thread

I didn't bother to click on Magnus' review of Captain Marvel because I already knew that it's going to be negative, but if what you said is true then I will not sub to him ever again. Same with Jeremy Jahns, the way he refused to even say anything nice about the movie and just compared it to WW while heaping praise on that movie was such a stupid thing to do that I unsubbed to him right away. Chris Stuckman and Aggressive comics also didn't like the movie, but at least they urged their audience to check it out (still disappointed in their reviews though). Campea and Grace both gave it mostly positive reviews. Screen Junkies though... really disappointed in Dan and Roth, particularly Dan. Saying that The Dark World and Iron Man 2 are better than CM, to me, is him putting this movie on the bottom of the barrel. I usually agree with Dan on his reviews but not this time.

I dont think Magnus or Jahns had an agenda to cater to the "angry white males".

Its not a coincedence people had problems with the movie. It has serius flaws some of which are VERY annoying.

You could say Magnus saying he will not watch it again is suspicius but i would defend that easily.

With so many 10+ masterpieces in the MCU i wouldnt rewatch CM again either.
Id rather watch any of the other 10/10s.

Plus Magnus has said a lot of weird things about other movies like some of the Mission Impossibles where he almost slept through them as well which for me is as weird as with the CM comments he made.

You cant judge taste.

Personally i agree with Jahns , Stuckman , Grace and the FlickPick reviews.

Magnus was a bit harsh and Campea is Campea as always liking every single movie he sees nomatter how bad.

I ve watched a lof of Campeas reviews. They are all the same.

It has become clearer throughout the years but I'm still sort of astonished that Disney is truly a powerhouse. A new character with a tiny mention in the post-credit of the previous movie is on course for 1.1B+ and that seems surprise no one. A few years ago I remembered people over BOT had a meltdown over the decline of AoU's OW from Avengers' OW (it was still 2nd domestic OW at the time, and was bumped to 3rd 7 weeks later by Jurassic World), while CW makes people go "Ew leg". BatB made 1.3B and everyone was like "Hmm par for the course". This year if Frozen makes less than 1.3B and Lion King/ Avengers End Game makes less than 1.8B I'll expect comments about "under performance" too. Aladdin can flop with less than 500M WW but I won't be surprised if it somehow makes 1B+ either.

Disney has flops of course (Nutcracker and AWiT), so do other studios, but they have many successes and they are huge.

This year is absolutely unbelievable for Disney. They have so many nailed on billion dollar films and many will finish well in excess of that. CM is actually one of the smaller ones and one that wasn’t guaraneteed a billion. I don’t like listing them as I always seem to forget one lol, but no studio will ever have had a year like the one Disney are about to get.

A billion is no longer something that's in any sort of doubt, at this point the question is whether or not it reaches 1.2b.
With China somewhat recovering and the US legs looking solid, expectations have to be revised upwards again. It will be very interesting seeing exactly how high it can get. And a billion won’t seem very far away after next weekend.

I think it's plausible that either or both of them have seen how much of clickbait anti-Brie channels have been in recent weeks and wanted some of the audience for themselves. Both really strived to say as many negative things about the movie without trying to even balance their views with some positive stuff.

If I weren't such a fan of the MCU, I would probably be a lot more skeptical of the Disney hegemony. I still try to be a little, but Marvel is making it difficult.

Some of the other stuff isn't as interesting to me, since it is so heavily nostaglia-based, like the live action remakes of the animated films. I get why they do it, it's printing money, but I have a hard time really caring.

Star Wars is somewhere in between. I've never been the biggest Star Wars fan. Right now I'm mostly interested in IX out of intellectual curiosity. It will be fascinating to see what choices they make to close out the saga.

My friends and I are trying to decide whether it's even worth checking out Ep. 9. On one hand it's the last of the SW saga of films that started back in '77. On the other hand after the fiasco that is TLJ we couldn't care less about the characters or the story at this point. JJ's got quite a mountain to climb to get the audience vested in any SW films at this point.

He certainly does. Or the creative team as a whole.

The tricky point is this decision to really demystify Luke, while moving the newer characters into a supporting role, especially Rey and Finn. Tearing down the old while not really building up the new, or not sufficiently.

That's the excitement of the MCU. It's been about building something extraordinary ("There was an idea..."), which is exciting to watch, and exciting to be a part of.

There's been a lot of tearing down along the way, but generally with the goal of building up the characters, especially in the long run. Tearing down Asgard to build up Thor, for example (in the sense of giving him bigger challenges to overcome).

Adding a new piece is always exciting, Captain Marvel being a great example of that.

What's funny is that #Strugglenation guys loved it. At least one of them gave it a 10, which is more than I would but anyway... Schmoesknows guys Harloff and Ellis both gave it 3.75 Schmoes out of 5 so they liked it as well.

Very off topic but I think Youtube's search algorithm might be broken because I keep getting offered a lot of these anti-Captain Marvel videos or channels when I was just looking for videos on the James Gunn rehiring.

Your Solo theory is possible. But Lucasfilm didn't feel that the humor in the first cut was working.
Unfortunately, they gambled and lost.

Though having seen the type of humors Lord and Miller have done with the great Lego movies, I tend to agree it would have seemed very out of place in the Star Wars universe.

I think he also liked B vs S, giving it 4/5 but dropped it to 3/5 on another viewing. For some reason he had to praise that on one of his recent Captain Marvel videos. Considering he works in pro-wrestling sort of and is a fan (though apparently has tuned out of the WWE), there is a very good chance he's working his viewers. Unless he was going to work a work and wound up working himself into a shoot and can't get out of it. :D

Same here. I've been getting tons of videos recommended to me like the ones from Geeks and Gamers. Had to mark a few of them as Spam / Misleading too.

Box Office: 'Captain Marvel' Stays No. 1 With $69M, Soars to $760M Globally

Captain Marvel easily stayed No. 1 in its second weekend, earning another $69 million in North America as it rocketed to a worldwide total of $760 million through Sunday. The global total includes a massive $494 million from overseas, where the female-led superhero pic collected $120 million in its sophomore outing.

Highest-grossing superhero movies of all time:

1. Avengers: Infinity War — $2B
2. The Avengers — $1.5B
3. Avengers: Age of Ultron — $1.4B
4. Black Panther — $1.3B
5. Incredibles 2 — $1.24B
6. Iron Man 3 — $1.21B
7. Captain America: Civil War — $1.15B
8. Aquaman — $1.14B
9. The Dark Knight Rises — $1.08B
10. The Dark Knight — $1B
...
...
23. Captain Marvel — $760M

Carol is coming for blood.

I feel that the 2nd weekend box office is a validation of the quality of the movie. If the WOM was terrible or if the movie was as bad as what some of the reviewers would have you believe, this movie would not be on its way to a billion. Similar blockbusters like Batman v Superman, Justice League, and Suicide Squad had far more popular characters and actors than Captain Marvel, not to mention a bigger budget, and yet none of them have made a billion. That tells me that the audience in general really do like the movie and are supporting it with their money. All those detractors must be wallowing in tears right now.

Bosh, $760m! I was bang on. :cwink: This time next week the serious countdown to a billion begins before we start looking to exactly how much further (and higher and faster) CM might go!

Super salty, whiny cry baby tears.

I love this, but I am not looking forward to the whining when it knocks The Dark Knight out of the top ten.

Or maybe I am?

I think a billion is guaranteed at this point. There's no serious competition until Shazam. Us will give it a slight test but nothing major. I'm guessing $890-920M by next weekend easily.

Yeah, guaranteed and just a question of exactly how much further it can get. I think those numbers are realistic.
