Captain Marvel The Captain Marvel box office prediction thread

I had never seen anything from the Geeks and Gamers YouTube channel. I keep seeing it mentioned here so I thought I'd check it out. Holy s***. The comments section is ridiculous there. It's pure nazi land in there. I wish I'd never heard the name Geeks and Gamers. Thanks a lot guys!

What's insane is at $1.1B or more, CM might not end up in the top 5 films box office wise at the end of the year. 2019 is going to likely be one of the biggest years we've seen in a long time.

And maybe except for one movie (detective picachu) all the other movies in the top 5 will probably be from Disney...

Ikr?

Detective Pikachu, Far From Home, The Lion King, Endgame, Toy Story 4, Frozen 2... :shock.

I'm having trouble visualizing it. What we need is a handy chart or something graphical in nature.

(Not really. Please don't spend any time on such a thing :cwink:)

Japan OW seems to be a bit less than initialy predicted ($5.9M instead of $6.5M) but still biggest OW for a non-Avengers/non-spider-man Marvel movie (even if we exlude Friday numbers since some films opened on a Saturday). If it has average MCU legs it could reach about $22M-$27M.

That's still a very good result and will be more than expected. Maybe we're seeing slow signs of growth in Japan.

I think Sony gets the movie profits and not Disney but regardless, Disney is poised to have a tremendous year.

So, hypothetically, how would this Disney buying tickets work? You buy a bunch of tickets, the movie theaters take their cut and you lose money? Is there something I'm missing?

Yes Disney is in the business of losing money just to show the haters.

Also, Disney is a publicly traded company, whose investors include large financial institutions and some of the nastiest hedge fund sharks on the planet, who if they were pissed off enough could cut the market value of the company in half by hitting a few buttons on their smartphones, and then sue for what's left. So yeah, Disney would totally try to defraud them by inflating earnings numbers for one single movie in order to prove a minor point about feminism.

Disney is buying the tickets like anyone would online through Fandango or whatever to make it look like Captain Marvel isn't actually flopping because of the backlash :o
