The Clinton Thread II

I think Hillary needs to own up to some of her mistakes and humanize herself a bit. It's a risk because she may get attacked on admitting that she's not perfect but I think that's what people are looking for with her....accountability. It's a strength when you can admit your shortcomings and acknowledge why many people don't trust you. It would go a long way to bridging that unfavorability gap if she could pull it off right.

I'm shocked she hasn't apologized for the emails. A simple apology on that front would've gone such a long way. Before the Congressional hearings even started, to just say:

"I did something that I thought was acceptable. My predecessors did it. Other high ranking officials have done it. I thought it was common practice and was acceptable. But I was wrong. And other people doing it does not make it okay for me to do it. Not when I am running for the top office in the country. The buck stops with me. I have no excuse. I made a mistake and I'm sorry."

Yep, she needs to start off her nominee acceptance speech just like that with some somber remarks taking accountability with no excuses and try to pull it off as sincerely as she can....then shoot for the stars with a positive/confident vision for the nation

I've never even heard of this Kaine guy. I've seen his name mentioned here, but I don't know anything about him. I don't even know what he looks like.

New York (CNN)Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton said Tuesday she is "sorry" for using a private email server, going further than ever before to express remorse for the controversy that has rocked her campaign.
"I'm sorry about that," Clinton said in an at-times emotional interview on ABC News' "World News Tonight with David Muir," acknowledging that she should have used separate accounts for work and personal business. "I take responsibility and I am trying to be as transparent as I possibly can."

Virginia Governor and DNC Chairman

Tim Kaine was inaugurated in Virginia's colonial capitol of Williamsburg as the state's 70th governor on January 14, 2006. His star on the rise, he was selected to give the Democratic response to President George W. Bush's State of the Union address shortly afterward.

Battling partisan gridlock during his term, Kaine cut social welfare programs to balance the budget and invested in infrastructure development, but otherwise struggled to push through major legislation. His national profile continued to rise, however, as he was the first governor outside Illinois to endorse Barack Obama for president. He was widely considered a strong candidate to be picked as the Democratic presidential nominee's running mate, before eventually losing out to Delaware Senator Joe Biden.

Kaine became chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 2009, and held on to the position despite his party's significant losses in the 2010 midterm elections. He stepped down in 2011 with the intention of campaigning for Jim Webb's soon-to-be-vacated Virginia senate seat.

U.S. Senator

After defeating former Virginia Senator and Governor George Allen in the 2012 campaign, Tim Kaine became the first senator to deliver a speech in Spanish from the Senate floor.

Since being elected to his post, Kaine has joined the Senate's Armed Services, Budget, Foreign Relations and Aging Committees. Among his accomplishments, he introduced the Troop Talent Act of 2013 to help servicemen and women transition to the civilian workplace, and coauthored the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015. Additionally, he is a founder and co-chair of the bipartisan Career and Technical Education (CTE) Caucus, and has introduced legislation to address issues of sexual assault and drug treatment.

Thanks, Kelly. :)

I think it is interesting to note that Kaine was one of the early well established party members to back Obama initially, over Clinton. We have a full circle thing happening and another connection between Hillary and the president going forward in the campaign. His fluency in Spanish is also a huge net plus. This is a high ranking surrogate that can go on Univision and Telamundo and rally the Hispanic speaking citizens' vote. Hillary needs to recreate the coalition that brought Obama victory. Given Trump's "rhetorical flourishes" shall we say... Well he's made himself unattractive to many African Americans (the birther thing is not going to be forgotten by that demographic any time soon), Hispanic American citizens and women. He's done a lot of work for Hillary in making himself unacceptable to those groups, but she still needs to make sure those blocs get out and hit the voting booths come Election Day. Having Kaine's history with the Jesuits (most Hispanics are Catholic remember) in South America out there told by Kaine himself in Spanish is a good way to help her pitch on that front. That he's been elected to state wide and federal offices in Virginia is also something that shouldn't be sneezed at.

I think it's a good choice. He's white, he's a man, he's old, he's got experience. This is going to ease a lot of worries.

Also he's from a swing state, and popular with the locals. That could really come in handy.

Barring him being revealed to be a total moron like Sarah Palin, or having a bunch of skeleton in the closet, I think he's an asset to the Clinton campaign.

Since when is 58 old?

... Since when is 58 not considered to be old?

another deleted post? jeez lol

58 is "getting on up there" or "over the hill", but not old. Especially when Clinton is 68 and Trump is 70.

He's fluent in Spanish and the Bible? ...Well played, Hillary Clinton.

Yep. They need to take advantage of that.

With Kaine's selection, the average age of the major party tickets is roughly the same. Trump is 1 year and 4.5 months older than Hillary while Kaine is 1 year and 3.5 months older than Pence.

They're all ancient. As underscored by Hillary's computer illiteracy as shown in her disposition.

The Senate is practically a gerontocracy. Americans used to make fun of the Soviet Politburo because the average member was so old. The average US Senator today is 62 years old. We've had people decompose in congress.

Quite frankly, it's impressive how fit these candidates are.

Yes, I am beginning to feel the same.

Democratic VP candidates since 1992
1992-1996 Gore (boring)
2000 Lieberman (boring and awful)
2004 Edwards (exciting...later fumbled)
2008-2012 Biden (slightly better than boring)
2016 Kaine (boring)

I'm still annoyed by Lieberman all these years later retrospectively when I think of that election.

How on Earth is the inventor of the Internet boring???
