The Clinton Thread II

I didn't catch the close of Bernie's remarks last night (hopefully he tried to sell his voters on winning the long game as opposed to just throwing the baby out with the bathwater and voting independent); did he do a better job of bringing his supporters around to voting Hillary?

That's pretty much what he did. He framed it as this election not being about the candidates but rather being about Supreme Court appointments, equal rights, and global warming, etc. He also went into great detail of the agreement he made with the Clinton campaign to integrate some of his policy items with college tuition, a new Glass-Steagall act, campaign finance reform, etc.

Basically it's like saying we didn't want Golden state warriors to win the finals if Steph didn't shoot the game winner.

first night of the dnc was a success, in large part to michelle obama. i think half the country was wishing she was running for office after that speech. corey booker came off as a little too rehearsed and long winded, while liz warren was okay, but ultimately forgettable, and bernie's moment was more like counseling session for his supporters. i'm sure the democrats are happy to have that out of the way and to move into centrist land for the rest of the convention.

tonight, the big dog himself, and a bit of history, as we'll be officially nominating the first woman for president in the history of these united states.

bit of an aside: should we start an election thread? it seems like we're bouncing around three or four different threads and discussing the same general thing, the general, in all of them.

Agreed! How in the hell is boring @ss Clinton/Kaine gonna top that????????? That ticket has 0 enthusiasm to me.

Exactly. And there's a lot on stakes in this election, including the next Supreme Court justice. If those Bernie supporters would just stop and think about the possibility of having Trump nominate the next justice, and how that will affect their lives and the things they're passionate about, they should stop with all these protests and support Clinton. They don't need to love her, but she will do much more for their causes as the POTUS than Trump ever will.

It's not fair to put that on us. It's Clinton's fault and the DNC AS WELL AS THE ENTIRETY OF THE ELECTED DEM Leadership for trying to force this woman on us. I don't want the Clintons back in the white house. They had their time and it was the 90's. She is running a 90's CAMPAIGN? HRC is a dated candidate and her time to run was 04. Im also not the ultimate hold out. I will vote for her but only because of the Supreme Court and at the end of the day I'm a democrat. I know nothing is gonna change with her but business as usual and Bernie supporters need to understand that AND JUST ACCEPT IT THAT THE ESTABLISHMENT WON. Time to turn the page.

kaine's a centrist, but i think he's a fairly decent speaker. he's like a corny dad, but i don't think he's a complete bore. hillary is a policy maker, she's a worker, but she's never going to be electric at the mic. that said, i'm sure she'll deliver a good speech on thursday. the highlights of the convention will no doubt be the obamas and bill tho.

How would it be different if Bernie had won? What would he bring to the table to get things done? Has he proven that he can work across the aisle? What experience does he bring to the table?

I think Bernie did what he does best, he got the dialogue going, and from what it looks like got about 90% of his big ideas into the Democratic platform....I think Bernie did what he could and needed to do, and I'm not sure that much more than that could be hoped for from him as President...he has the ideas, I'm just not sure that he could have gotten any more done than Obama, and quite possibly it would be less.

i agree with your sentiment kelly. being 'exciting' doesn't get anything done, but it is what a lot of people look for. i think that feeling in our celebrity obsessed culture will only continue to grow going forward. but i'd be willing to wager if hillary wins, due to her friends in the senate and congress on both sides of the aisle, just like her husband, she'll get a lot more policy passed than obama. and that's why if she gets in, i'd give her very high odds of winning re-election: once she gets to work, people may not fall in love with her, but they respect the work she does. give me a level-headed 'policy wonk' over an orator any day.

I would schedule Michelle Obama to speak after Hillary if I could, although that may steal Hillary's thunder.

you definitely don't want another speaker after your nominee. i don't care who either of them are or what year it is, that's just a bad idea all around.

Why would you do that? A speaker after your candidate is announced and speaks? no....

Yep, which is why in retrospect, I feel bad about supporting Obama in 2008. Hillary would have got stuff done then, she wouldn't have wasted the Democratic majorities in both houses on universal health care. Her and Bill already tried that in 1992 and learned that lesson the hard way.

Nah, she's just going to make promises to do things she's had 15 years in the political game that already should've been done.

why did hillary waste these past 15 years of her presidency? smdh. #dncshame

Re-Elect Monica Lewinsky to keep Bill satisfied while Hillary is making the tough decisions of the world, a first Gentlemen's job can be very hectic also.:hehe:

maybe he'll give ol' monica a shout out and then wink tonight during his speech.

I thought it was cool how Bill's speech highlighted some positives in Hillary's societal outreach.

So what do you guys make of the Julian Assange threats of more leaks?

Probably more like a statement of fact than a threat. Say what you will about him, he delivers on what he says he is going to do.
