The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

No excuse if it fails. Gunn literally had all the time in the world to get this just right.
I don't mind some humor but I don't want it to be a comedy.

I'm not really worried yet, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little nervous.
One thing that has always fascinated me is how quick people want to remove all sense of stakes and seriousness when it comes to live action versions of comic book characters.

They'll say "It's a comic book movie, it shouldn't take itself too seriously"

I never understood this when you have plenty comic books and animated films like Flashpoint Paradox and plenty episodes of B:TAS that take themselves plenty seriously and yet no one ever mentions that.

When it's flesh and blood actors all of a sudden things need to be silly and lighten up.

That's as absurd as anything you are speaking against.

You can be silly or you can be serious/dark. But you have to do one or the other RIGHT. A great silly movie is A GREAT MOVIE. A bad silly movie is a bad movie. A great serious/dark movie is A GREAT MOVIE. A bad serious/dark movie is a bad movie.

I mean it depends...some stories should lighten up and others should be darker and edgier. Variety should be what people strive for.

No one has. That's movie magic. Zeitgeist. Destiny. It might be this year's Barbie. It might be this year's The Flash. It might be somewhere in between.

Somewhere in between is the safe bet. It’ll make enough to warrant a sequel is all that matters.

It's a movie. You either like it or don't like it (personally).

Anything else is just bandwagon jumping.

I like The Flash. It's got some severe fx problems, it's not "GREAT," but I like it.

I like (only) the first Venom* movie. It's a dumb movie, but I like it.

* I HATE HATE HATE the 2nd Venom movie. I didn't care much about the 3rd one, even though I gotta say I was somewhat (a little tiny little bit) moved by the finale.

Couldn't fare less about whether someone will agree with me on that.
I liked the flash ok. I still say they should have taken the loss and recast Ezra. But that's neither here nor there.

The first venom was ok. I've yet to see 2 or 3.

The thing with Superman is, even tho I love Gunn's style, I really hope he hasn't made superman into a wisecracking super dude.
He needs to be taken seriously. Yes, Superman can, and needs, to have some humor about him, but I just hope it's not too extreme.

I expect that from a character like guy, not from Superman.

Yep. I like plenty of movies others dont and hate films I am supposed to like. Not because I have to be different, but because I like what I like.

I dont think reviews are going to be bad anyways but they wont affect my enjoyment one way or another. I care what I think when I am sitting in the theater. That is why I don't get all anxious about this stuff...its not like anything changes in my life if it opens to record numbers and 90+ on RT. People get way to caught up in it like it is the Super Bowl or something. It ruins fandom...

I like The Flash too. Agree with you 100% on this one, the VFX is trash but the story is good. It works better than MOS or BvS, imo.

You'll find out soon enough whether you like James Gunn's Superman or not.

I liked Kraven. Yes, I did.

Well we can obviously tell there is some humor and wisecracks, which I think is good because we need to see that he loves being Superman. We also can see that Superman is going through some stuff so it is not going to be all 4 color greatness and yuck yucks. I mean we know he gets the snot beat out of him, we know a lot of people are wary of him even when he is helping people and we know that Lex is full on trying to destroy him. So I dont think this is going to be a comedy anymore than say Spiderman was a comedy.

I will say, in comparison to MOS and SR, the way they marketing the film is definitely different. (outside of spoilers) Almost none of the plot has been given away in the trailers but we know quite a bit about each character which I think was smart. And while MOS was great at the tie ins like Wal-Mart and Gillette which helped make extra money and push a bit of awareness what WB is doing with this film is pretty off the charts. For better or for worse they are putting everything they have behind this and have the cast out selling themselves as much as selling the film. I think that was an A+ plan!

I think the Snyder bros are wanting this to fail as much as we want it to succeed.
I'm not gonna lie, if it's as good as I hope it is, and makes as much as I think it will, I'm gonna be petty about it toward them.

With this movie in particular, 90% of the comments I read are "Well what did you expect? It's Superman, he's supposed to be a goofy and silly"

And I always think "Is he?"

I've seen S:TAS, JL:TAS JL:U some of the best Superman stuff for a casual viewer and none of it ever screamed "Silly" to me.

Why not capture the essence of those shows?

Of course they do. They've attached their entire livelihood and personality upon wanting to restore the Snyderverse and everything they think is in its way (when the one thing that's truly stood in its way was the release of BVS - ALMOST 10 YEARS AGO).

So what, man? We're grasping at straws and yelling at clouds here.
