The Daily Planet Vol. 2: Superman News and Speculation Thread (🚨TAG SPOILERS🚨)

It doesn't really matter, but I wonder how strong this Superman will be.

Will he be Planet moving strong, or, will his upper limit be in the neighborhood of, oh, say a 100,000 tons.
Or Maybe it's somewhere in the middle.
Does the bleeding, wheezing, and bruising concern you?

If they had done Guy's classic look with the turtleneck and vest, I would've been all over that Halloween costume.

This is neither here nor there, but I find it interesting how nowadays, seen both here and in the Supergirl set pics, they're doing this thing of leaving a tiny upper part of the cape for CGI-heavy shots, when back in the filming of Man of Steel and BVS they would remove the cape completely and add the whole thing in post. I'd be interested in hearing a visual effects pro explain the difference.
I'm no effects expert, I've only dabbled in VFX software, but I have a few friends working as VFX artists in the industry. If I had to guess why the DCU decides to keep the cape attachment, vs Snyder who opted to remove them entirely, it probably saves the VFX team a bunch of work tbh. Having the cape attachment at the shoulders not only serves as visual reference, but if the shot doesn't require a ton of cape movement near his shoulders then they can just keep the cape attachment on and blend the rest of the cape in. While digitally adding a cape attachment to his shoulders isn't as FX heavy as most other shots dealing with Superman's powers, it still does require a butt load of work to do and can honestly be more tedious. It was probably not a major issue for Snyder because he's CGI junkie, but James seems to value the balance of practical and digital.

This is gonna be epic. I've been kinda cautiously optimistic after being burned by BvS and then JL, but this looks and feels different.

At this point, Gunn would have to drop the ball in a catastrophic way to fumble this film. The box office and general audience is one thing, but JG is putting his entire weight behind a classic Superman story with character studies that will follow closely to the average joes interpretation of what makes these characters beloved. There is no deconstructing going on this time around.

For fans of Superman? I just don't see how this will fall flat for us, unless the writing and story completely fall apart (say what you want about Gunn, those very things are his strengths).

I am starting to teeter towards Superman being a big hit, especially opening weekend. It feels like a sleeping giant in-waiting. But it's still so incredibly hard to put a finger on of what Superman can bring in. Pre-sales will be highly interesting.

Finally had a chance to watch the BTS footage on my TV screen. Overall, I was both surprised and impressed with how many practical shots and background were used in this film. While I'll always have a special spot for Henry's Superman in my heart, I always found it irritating that a good portion of his Superman scenes were filmed in front of obvious green screen... especially when the setting didn't really require it. This may end up being the first film that I actually purchase on blu-ray within the past ten years.

The practical approach, for me, is what is going to set this movie apart in bigger ways than even I am anticipating regarding personal taste. Going practical and spending time on location is highly appreciated. This world is going to feel real.

No. The way I see it is, it must have taken an extremely strong opponent to do that to him.
Maybe he was weakened first beforehand.
Perhaps Lex does something to weaken him first, then the opponent kicks superman's azz..I don't know.

I like it tho. It makes him relatable.

Yes. I figure the floor will be 600 to 625ish, if it's just ho hum.

700 to 750 if it's really good. MAYBE even a bit more IF it's great. 800+?

It's just so hard to say at this point.
I'm really liking what I've seen so far tho.

I'm anxious to see the next trailer with some new footage.
I know you can't really judge a films box office on it's trailer, but in this case, I think it will be a fairly good indicator if it's gonna be a hit, or not.

I'll take any one of those finishes. The sweet spot for me will probably be around $720-725 mil WW. That would be a healthy start where the DCU would be off to the races. My barometer is 'The Batman'. If Superman can bring in a few extra million more than Battison, that would be ace. Anything plus welcomed.

Over powered? Damned.

Not powerful enough? Damned.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't!

It doesn't bother me either way. I happen to like when Superman is battered where he has to give it his all and every ounce of his strength to push through. Afterall, that is the heart of the character. The fight back in us all against all odds against unforgivable circumstances.

It is the biggest mystery of the first trailer. What can hurt Superman like that. Hopefully Gunn keeps that a secret until the movie.

I'd like to see something like Superman 2 where Superman was made to have to out think the villian. I'm tired of most medi treating Superman like a meathead who's only good for a brawl, while Batman is treated like tier 1 level intellectual. Superman is an alien with a different brain to ours from a race of people thousands of years beyond our own. Superman not just some dumb meat head.

Hello, everyone!

I apologize if this was already discussed, but I when I got to finally see the official figures (specifically, the Super Powers line), I feel like they give away a spoiler.

Green Lantern, Mr. Terrific and Hawkgirl (in the BTS footage) all have a similar symbol on their chest. If you closely, I think you can make out a "JL."

Its actually the Lord Tech logo.

They are a corporate team here (hence why there’s no traditional League-ers included). No official name yet, but the merchandising has them labeled as the “Justice Gang” lol. My guess is Superman will inspire at least a couple of them to leave the Lord Tech team by the end.

Flick you’re reason 874623569 why women are truly smarter.

That makes sense.

Gotcha. Thanks for clearing that up for me, flickchick85!

Seeing everything revealed yesterday just made me even more excited for this, And it was already one of my most anticipated movies this year.

I still need to get one of movie logo shirts to add to my Superman shirt collection, and I RARELY collect TV/movie figures of any hero, but I went ahead and pre-ordered that McFarlane Superman. THAT'S how excited I am.

Outside of the Internet, I feel like I'm one of the only people I can think of that's excited for this. That why I'm so thankful for the Hype and having people to share in the excitement with online!

Clark is as intelligent as it comes. The Reeve-type persona of the mild mannered reporting buffoon masks that intelligence (by design of course).

I hope the level of intelligence comes in the form of the Fortress technology. We already saw how the Superman Robots calculated the amount of damage Superman was in. I hope the Fortress provides that alien AI.

I'm gonna guess that this will most likely be the first time this superman has ever lost a fight, and most definitely the first time he's ever been seriously injured.
But obviously, he knew it could happen in the future, hence the machine in the fos to heal him.

As for as his intelligence, he should.have a super brain also.

Any thoughts on who/what this may be?

White martian definitely comes to mind. I've seen others suggest it could be a shriveled up Parasite and he'd get bigger as he consumes.

Honestly I'm down for either. But it does make things very interesting.

Hmmm. Parasite is an interesting suggestion, especially if he does get bigger with the more energy he consumes. I still wonder about Bautista and how it appeared that he may have been cast in a secret role in this. He would make a good (fully grown) Parasite.

TESTIFY!!! I too love (and miss) the intelligent Superman and many people forget that Superman's original tagline wasn't "faster than a speeding bullet....." but rather "a hercules in strength and a genius in intellect" Say what you will about the silver-bronze age Superman but those versions were highly intelligent who tended to think through their problems more often than out-muscle them while ironically the much weaker version of Superman, the Byrne version, tended to muscle on through a lot of the conflicts.
The STAS superman was the version that focused most on his smarts but sadly that came at the price of nerfing him to the nth degree.
One day I would like to see someone (outside the comics) to combine the power-intellect aspect of Superman without sacrificing either in the process just like Morrison, Kennedy Johnson or J.Williamson have done so often, dare I hope that J.Gunn would? We'll see soon enough.
