DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

There is no “winning” for DC fans. Only pain.

How my 1988 born mind feels...

...while, I can safely say The Batman is now my one-true Batman [Rucka/Brubaker style].

Keaton will always have a huge hold on my Batman heart.

Unless it was a Batman Beyond situation where he’s the guy in the chair advising a much younger new Batman, Keaton being the permanent Batman in the DCEU was just so stupid to me. Either bring Affleck back or merge Pattinson into the DCEU, but having Keaton back full time just screamed “nostalgia” just for the sake of it to me.
That’s the only way it could have worked IMO. Wouldn’t have minded if they went with that. Once Reeves is done doing his films his way, then I’m fine if Pattinson, Kravitz, Farrell are open to branching out.

I think, for better or worse, a hard reboot is coming.
The signs are all there.
Feels like we could be going through the stages of that at this point, and they just don’t want to announce it all at once. Also to test the waters to an extent and see if everything blows up with one announcement at a time or not.

Funnily enough... they wanted to release these DC films like the comics and they perfectly matched the Dan Didio method.

Overblown arcs, frustrating cross-overs, half-measures, leading to a necessary need to reboot.

DC's reboots have always been half-measures. Take the original Crisis on Infinite Earths, for example. With the reboot they wanted to establish that Clark was the only Kryptonian. But they still wanted to keep Supergirl so Supergirl was turned into a "shapeshifting being created from the genetic matrix of another universe’s Lana Lang". Power Girl (Supergirl from Earth 2) became an Atlantean (???) and a new Huntress was introuduced who looked exactly like the previous Huntress (Bruce's and Selina's daughter from Earth 2) but was now a completely different character (daughter of a crime boss).

I've never understood this obsession DC has with rebooting its universe(s) through hyper-complex stories of multiple universes and different versions of characters colliding with each other. This completely defeats the purpose of simplifying things for new readers, especially when the fallout from such events continues to be treated as a side note in the new series. Total nonsense and the reason I always select one-shot or relatively self-contained stories as my DC comics readings (mostly Batman, whose rich universe, fortunately for me, allows it to stand alone anyway).

If Gunn & Safran decided today to build their universe through events of this nature in a movie like The Flash or something else, it would already be a misstep imo. Apart from a hard reboot, I'm convinced they won't have a chance to succeed.

i think what gunn/safran is doing is overall is for the greater good.

and signs are pointing to a hard reboot.

while i enjoyed a good portion of the dceu films, a large portion of the GA and fanbase have not.
there isn't a cohesive vision to it.
and there's a certain perception of this dc franchise that's become baggage that has weighed it down.

you can write a whole book about what caused this and who is at fault here.

so i'm just wait and see with this, as always.

but maaan, i really want a good superman movie. like...at least within the next decade.
one can dream.

Not saying it WILL happen, but given Gunn's penchant for lesser known characters, we may see the likes of films such as the question, power girl, zatanna, etc etc with no thought given to a superman or ww film(s).
Just a thought.

Power Girl would be interesting - would they have the nerve to go 'comic-accurate'?

the question centric episodes in the jlu are some the best, so i am down for them having movies for b and c level characters like him.

if character and story are good, thats all that matters!

I wouldn't be at all opposed.
If it were up to me, the slate of films would be..
Etrigan
Deadman
The question
Booster gold
Solomon Grundy
A Lex Luther origin film
Dr Fate
Spectre
Vandal savage
Swamp thing
MM
GL ( john Stewart )
A wally west flash film
Captain Atom.
Hawkman and hawkgirl
Zatanna.

He prefers b and c characters because he likes to play everything for maximum laughs and irreverence. A level characters like Batman and Superman don't need much of a push to look silly, but they're still generally treated with enough reverence and love that there'll be something of an outcry if the attempt is made. There's no such danger with the likes of, say, Plastic Man or Animal Man.

They already made it clear in all their public statements Superman and Wonder Woman are what they consider pilars and fundamental parts of their new universe.

A Zatanna movie is way overdue.

Get Naomi Scott in the role and let her work her magic. No pun.

I doubt it. We know Zaslav wants the big hitters on screen.

There in lies the rub.

At the end of the day, regardless of what Gunn and Saffron may want or desire to do , they aren't free agents, and Zaslav either gives the go ahead or not.

Zaslav ain't abandoning big brand new characters for the sake of exploring lesser known to the GA characters that Gunn may be into.

They can do both of course, but Zaslav doesn't want a plan that doesn't include Superman, Wonder, and the other bigger name characters.

My main want is for a Superman film full of hope and brightness.
Something of a mix of man of tomorrow and birthright.
If cavill is replaced, then so be it.
The character is bigger than any one actor.

The reboots have been a way to (theoretically) update the characters and get rid of all the baggage that comes with decades of continuity. But DC has never managed to do them well. Usually they retain some stuff while changing a bunch of other stuff and it gets messier and messier with every reboot. So in 1985 Crisis on Infinite Earths rebooted the DC Universe. Then Infinite Crisis (2005) debooted the universe. Then Flashpoint (2011) rebooted the universe yet again only for it to be debooted by Doomsday Clock (2017)...again.

It all starts with whom they hire to direct these films.

No more one hit wonder directors or directors who have never handled a big tent pole film..

If they claim "to not get the hero" then pass on them.
If they want to re-imagine the hero, then also pass on them. Update yes but re-imagine, no.

They already made it clear in all their public statements Superman and Wonder Woman are what they consider pilars and fundamental parts of their new universe.

The question is if that still stands with gunn and Safran.
The question is how much leeway Do they have, how much is WB pushing their ideas?

If you look at the buzz the cavill cameo, now the WW news and in general always batman news generates...it seems to me the wisest to Focus on these three pilars for the Big New plan first.

Gunn and Safran were the ones that said that.
