DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

Considering they're only presenting the plan to Zaslav next week, I don't think they'll publicly announce anything until next summer.

That doesnt seem so unrealistic.
I could see them wanting to use the Plan for Hype, so it makes sense to reveal something around the time The Flash will come out.

I dont expect the big plan to be revealed in the early months of 2023, i could see them even wait till DC Fandome if one is next year.

But we will get some rumors and stuff, i dont think its possible for them to keep this huge 10 year plan completely secret.

Probably not, but it would be smart to give a tease of things to come without spoiling it all.

For instance if you know a superman or GL film is soon coming, then just show the symbol for each and say "soon".
That would be more than enough to get fans frothing.

Yup. 100% true. I'm sure there was more to it than just him refusing to fly tho.
JJ Abrams’ script leaked online and was eviscerated by fans. That was another major reason why the movie was cancelled.

I’d gladly take Abrams’ script over what we ended up getting with both Superman Returns (although I do have a reverence for that film as a spiritual sequel to the Donner films) and Man of Steel. We could have had a successful series of Superman films to coincide with Nolan’s trilogy.

People love to focus on the first draft but always skip over Abrams’ seconds draft from Oct 2003 which had Luthor as CEO of LexCorp (not a rogue Kryptonian) and cut a lot of other controversial elements too, like Kryptonian ninjas, etc. The film still had Krypton surviving the first film but even that could have worked, if you ask me. Different, sure, but I would have taken the journey.

Plus there was that spec script by Matthew Jenninson that WB bought for Wonder Woman in 2008/9, Goyer’s Green Arrow: Escape from the Super Max script in 2008, Berlanti’s Flash and Green Lantern scripts. The DCU could have been built alongside the MCU…

I think Flyby would have been better than Returns or MOS.
Without a doubt for me. I really enjoyed the later draft that ditched the Kryptonian Lex angle and the Kryptonian-Fu. The characterizations of Clark, Lois and Lex were pretty great, which is the true key to getting Superman media right for me. You get those characters right and I’ll be quite forgiving about just about anything else lol. It even got me on board with the notion of Krypton still being around as a war torn planet on the eve of total annihilation. McG would’ve had to really drop the ball hard in order for me not to enjoy that movie. It’s why, despite not being a huge fan of Abrams, I was totally rooting for him to get the Supes gig still. He clearly gets these characters and their appeal, and most of the big mythos changes in that script were Jon Peters mandates anyway.

I know way more people who are fans of Harley Quinn than, like, Green Lantern or The Flash.

Harley managed to become interesting for the Mainstream...which also is because DC didnt really promote GL or Flash.
Like the Infinite Frontier Flash run is incredible good...but you dont see DC promote it that well.
And im drawing a blank if we have a GL solo currently.
But then, i dont know if they currently promote Harleys solo a lot...just that they consider her now one of the four pillars of DC.

Ever since Harley split from Joker, DC has done a ton of Marketing for the character.
Thankfully they toned down the "DCs female Deadpool" idea, but the way DC pushed Harley is peak example how you can elevate a B or C character to A Level.

Of course it helps that she is a quirky character, General Audience likes that.

Its all fine and well, but alone the fact how the Green Lantern Universe is so underused...is a crime.
It will never not shock me how little WB/DC have done with Green Lantern in the last years.

You could build this up as big as the Star Wars universe for example, have literally unlimited potential with it.
And we can be lucky if the TV show manages to hold on and release one day...absolutely insane how they drop the ball on Green Lantern alone.

GL definitely should have had a higher priority than Peacemaker. But whatever I guess.

Yup. To do a GL film right, it would need to be on par with SW.
And that would be hard to do for less than 150/200 million ( imo )
And it would need to take itself serious. The last GL film didn't.

Im glad that we got Peacemaker...its awesome, so you dont hear any complain on my part about Peacemaker.

There is just so much more that goes into a Green Lantern anything so the comparison is rather far off.
But while we are at the topic...how is the Visual aspect of the Green Lantern Movie?
Are people happy with the CGI the Movie had?

I dont know how much has changed in CGI but 100 Million strikes me as a fine enough Budget for a Green Lantern Movie.
Which however brings us back to something very very strange...They made a Black Adam Movie with a 200 Million Dollar Budget...WTF?

If they have the money to throw it at Black Adam, they definitly should have the same for Green Lantern.

But i dont think that the Budget is the main problem.
If you do Green Lantern, you have to go big, have to go all out.
And that is incredible hard to do.

Developing and making Peacemaker is a hundred times easier and cheaper than GL though.
There's no way around the fact that that's a large part of it.

I don't think it's so much that they threw that money at Black Adam, as they threw that money at The Rock. He's what they thought would be the big draw.

WB is probably still weary of doing another Green Lantern film considering the last one was a massive bomb.

The last one bombed because it had a very poor script,
was miscast ( and I love RR )
And it had poor effects.

It was a case of WB thinking they could make a GL film and we would still see it no matter what.

The studio obviously aren't averse to the idea of Green Lantern in itself. John Stewart was a major part of the DCAU JL/JLU shows, Hal Jordan featured in his own animated series, there have been three animated Green Lantern movies (four if you count Justice League vs the Fatal Five, which is really a Jessica Cruz story), the 2011 live-action movie, appearances in various JL animated movies, and the upcoming HBO live-action series (which is now going to focus on John Stewart - obviously why they made him the central character of Beware My Power). They seem determined to keep the idea out there.

Fearful they'll use John and give him Hal's backstory with elements of his own.

Nah. Far as I am concerned it is a million times more interesting to just let interesting filmmakers choose whatever character calls to them and roll with that. I would be just as happy with a Question movie or a Booster Gold movie than any of the bigger names if the right person was attached - especially because a more obscure character offers extra freedom (and, lowkey, the B-List is more compelling than the A-List in so many ways at DC).

I would like to see Raven be portrayed by an Indian actress. I think it falls more in line with her original appearance.
