DC Films The DC Studios News and Discussion Thread

I don't know if this was already posted, but Bautista apparently met with Gunn to discuss the prospect of playing Bane. He basically came away with the impression that Gunn is looking to cast younger across the board, thus making him ineligible for the role.

Here are a few notable excerpts from Deadline:

“I have had conversations with James about that,” Bautista said, “but I think the direction he’s leaning in, completely rebooting that whole universe, he’s starting from scratch…and I think you need to do that.”

Bautista went on to say that he believes if DC is to be “revived,” Gunn and Co-CEO/Co-Chair Peter Safran “need to start from scratch” — reimagining the cinematic universe with younger talent front and center. “You need to start to plan for the next 15 years, and I just don’t think you can do that with me. And I understand that,” said the actor. “And, also, I have to say that I appreciate that because I don’t want to play a character that I can’t bring justice to it. I don’t think at this point in my career that I can bring justice to Bane anymore. I just don’t know if I could handle the physical part, and I don’t think I would have the longevity to plan ahead for films. So, I just don’t know if I’d be that guy.”

Dave Bautista Pitched James Gunn On Playing DC Role Of Bane – Deadline

everything I hoped wouldn't happened seems to be happening. No Battinson or Reeves in the DCU, not a complete reboot, possibly making tv shows essential viewing, etc.
Do you just mean in a quality sense? Because I don't want TV shows that I have to watch in order to make sense of things in the movies.

MOS, BVS, and Justice League will by the end be completely wiped away from canon with this move.
I have no doubt that's for the best.

Well, although that's generally the way with shared universes—whether we're talking about cinematic properties or comics—nothing has actually happened yet. It's all speculation for the most part.

But yeah, that would be a pretty revolting development.

Grace said that it’s a “substantial reboot” —meaning, while it’s not totally wiping the slate clean it’s far from a soft reboot that some have assumed. Perfectly possible Gunn keeps the TSS/Peacemaker cast and keeps those movies canon and most of everything about the old ten year history/continuity of the DCEU(it’s actually been ten years since MOS, I can’t believe it) has been either wiped away or drastically changed. I mean, we’re going to have a totally new rebooted Superman in this continuity who isn’t played by Henry Cavil. That alone should signify that this will be a hard reboot of sorts of this universe. MOS, BVS, and Justice League will by the end be completely wiped away from canon with this move.
It's also possible maybe the only person he'll keep is Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and some other mega-minor characters. She's been extremely vocal about wanting a full reboot so I think she'd be bothered if it wasn't or if it kept Gunn's cast. So far she seems neutral and even seems open to the idea of being more into it depending on how they present it-which suggests that while it's not 100% doing what she wants them to do, it's probably not the opposite either.

The fact she approves of Gunn's Batman plan when she's been /extremely/ vocal about wanting Battinson in the DCU even going so far as saying Gunn should threaten to fire Reeves if he doesn't comply or he should negotiate with him to the extent of even giving him a seat at the leaddership table also makes me curious as to what is it she heard about that. Did Gunn somehow find a way to make a Batman plan that involved two Batmen that she for some reason ended up liking after all? Maybe Dick Grayson Batman or something. Or is Battinson actually gonna be in the DCU contrary to what other people are saying? It's interesting.

It is pretty funny Gunn is making an announcement about the future of DC the day after Zachary Levi went nuts on twitter

Today is the day that Gunn unveils his plans for the DCU. I am excited to hear them. Reading the posts on the board I understand what we want as DC fans to happen. My question is what does the general audience want and how can WB get them to support the new DCU. Let me simplify it. What type of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman get DC a billion dollar film?

Honestly they would never do it but...untill Reeves Batman is finished have DCU Batman be a high budget tv franchise. Though the fact that Reeves batman will have tv spinoffs also counters my idea so eh..

Also honestly I doubt DCU will reach Marvels heights....but I hope it will.
Hope zaslav and Warner shareholders aren't expecting multiple billion dollar films. If say a swap thing movie happens for instance that thing isnt exactly gonna set records. They should expect and be happy with Shazam, antman level numbers to start of at least.

It's important for the executives (Zaslav specifically) to be patient with the process - especially when it comes to keeping box office expectations in check from the onset. I doubt Gunn and Safran are going to come out of the gate with billion-dollar earners. The DC brand needs rebuilt, and that may take some time. Keep the budgets under control and use these first few projects to set a quality standard for DC films moving forward. Quality films and shows, plus brand cohesiveness, should bring more people in over time. If Zaslav and company are expecting to make a billion dollars per film right from the jump, we're right back to square one with studio intervention, talent disenfranchisement, chaotic messaging and fractured branding.

If they would stop spending 200 million+ on making films ( BA ), and make sure the damn scripts are good, then they would make a profit.

Guess I'll see all this in the morning... Really hoping for something that feels positive, 'cuz dammit we need it.

Well, last time I checked, there is no January 32nd. So today will simply have to be the day.

chop chop, Jimbo

I’m still uneasy about this stunt. I don’t think it will be the announcement we’re all hoping for. James Gunn isn’t Kevin Fiege and Dc has much to prove before it will get my investment back.

Unpopular opinion maybe but I hope they don't put too much focus on this thing where they try to make a bunch of D and E list characters into zany hits.

Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Aquaman and their respective worlds, then we'll talk.

I really don't care if you get Scorsese to write and direct an Arm-Falloff Boy movie.

That sounds... very limiting. It's almost as if you don't know any DC characters outside of the main ones. :o

Grace actually seems somewhat positive about the announcement. Said it’s not a 100% reboot but she appears intrigued. Says it does not appear to be Marvel universe but very much DC. It supposed to be at noon eastern today.

Part of me is wondering whether Reeves has a separate continuity, but that RPatz had agreed to play separate Batman. Therefore there's "one Batman", but two versions of it?

Whatever they’re announcing has to have been worth whatever stunt they pulled yesterday to build hype. You don’t want your first big move to be perceived as an underwhelming dud, so they must have something substantial up their sleeve.

I am in the minority here. I love Pattinson and think he is the best Batman by far in live action but I would love another high tech not as dark Batman with a Dick Grayson Robin just for the team up movies.
