The Election Night Thread - Part 2

I felt like this:

Hillary = status quo and our GDP is stagnant right now.

Trump = could be horrifically bad or could be good. Possibly no middle ground.

If able to vote I probably would have leaned towards an outside candidate.

I'm reactionary when liberals are calling all Trump voters, racists?

It's not all. You had working class people in rural areas that have not seen the economic upturn other parts of the country have seen and blame Obama, you have the the Republicans who dislike Trump but would rather vote for Satan himself than a Clinton in the White House. You have evangelicals that will hold their nose because they care about wedge issues and the Supreme Court. But you cannot ignore that Trump had a disgustingly large coalition of voters that were blatantly racist, xenophobic, homophobic and they were proud of it. He appealed to the lowest common denominator in this country and I refuse to defend these people. These people really are deplorable and it's disgusting that we are in the 21st century and the President elect blatantly pandered to this group of people for two years now. It's not all Trump's supporters but they are certainly the most vocal.

Not all. Maybe most. Certainly many. People don't exactly say "yes, I am a racist."

But they do vote for people like Donald Trump, which gives us an indication. Ask them if Obama was a Muslim or born in Kenya, and you get better results. Half of Republicans believe that.

43% of whites voted for Obama. 58% for Trump.

Liberal logic dictates that 'maybe most' are racist. That's definitely, definitely, not reactionary.

I am too tired to try to reason with people anymore.

If you seriously want to trust a man like Trump –*a man whose own campaign won't trust with a Twitter account – with the nuclear codes, then quite frankly, I don't know if there is anything I can say to dissuade you.

This feels like some horrible nightmare that you can't wake up from. It's 2000 all over again, except George W. Bush is sociopath and a narcissist and he admitted to sexually molesting women. Oh and he's stooge for Putin.

I wish I could go into a 4 year coma.

Sometimes the most vocal can leave some to make broad strokes whether right or wrong for an entire group.

I would welcome Bush at this point. I told my wife earlier tonight that if I could choose between a Romney presidency in 2012 or a Trump presidency in 2016 I would pick Romney in a second. And I say this as someone that volunteered for Obama in both elections.

Boy, my spelling and grammar really goes to **** when I am upset. Oh well.

Forgive me folks, everything I believed in just disintegrated. I'll come to terms with it.

The problem is the entire group ignored that the candidate they voted for blatantly pandered to this vocal minority. It gave the alt-right vindication and while not everyone that voted for Trump is racist or sexist, they overwhelmingly said that its okay to engage in this type of behavior.

Suicides are going to skyrocket. Immigrants and minorities are going to be targeted in schools. Just wonderful. Be proud of yourself Trumpians. You are going after powerless minorities.

From the hostilities, it looks like not even the 2018 Winter Olympics will be able to unite the country.

I've been watching highlights of the Rio Olympics, a shining example of what the country could be when it's united, even if only for a few weeks.

Isn't Brazil coming apart at the seams?

I was talking about Team USA and their performance in the Rio Olympics. They destroyed everybody in the Medals, and that showed a united country for two weeks as we cheered on the athletes wearing Red, White and Blue. Michael Phelps, Allyson Felix, Simone Biles, Simone Manuel, Team USA in basketball to name a few. Also we support the US Olympians who don't medal. They don't medal and for us, that doesn't matter. What matters is representing the US at the Olympics.

Hell for a few weeks in August, the campaign season took a back seat to the US Olympians.

Makes me wonder what's going to happen at the 2018 Summer Olympics and 2018 FIFA World Cup. Is the US still going to be divided? Or do we unite as one, rooting for our Olympians and Soccer players if only for a few weeks.

I vaguely recall something about a swimmer vandalizing a bathroom and lying about it or something like that.

Sorry, I don't really follow the Olympics.

Ryan Locthe, the one dark spot in an otherwise awesome Olympics for Team USA. I follow the Olympics and I can tell you that every Olympics (summer and winter) the country unites as one as we root for our athletes, medal or no medal. I wonder if things will be different based on the election of Trump and the outrage of his election.

Same for the FIFA World Cup.

Unless Trump turns the Olympics into being about him - a distinct possibly given his mad Roman emperor size ego - probably not.

He won't. In fact, I see Trump being Team USA's biggest supporter, just to show the rest of the world American dominance without the use of force.

No matter who the President is, the country does unite as one for the Olympics and World Cup. Political differences are set aside to root for Team USA, if only for two weeks.

During the two weeks of the Rio Olympics, the top story was not the campaign, but the epic awesomeness of USA Swimmer Michael Phelps. The whole country was rooting for him. And for one night during the first week of the Olympics, an African American woman made history by winning an Olympic gold medal in a predominately white sport, which trended worldwide all over social media.

I agree with those saying this isn't the end. Trump will be horrible, but we've had horrible presidents before (though I see Trump being worse than most), and are still here. In terms of policy, I don't see him realistically, constitutionally being able to pass 90% of his campaign rhetoric, let alone in 4 years. My main concerns are what precedents this election sets for the future -

1. A candidate with 0 political experience can win the presidency.
2. A candidate can offer next to no policy stances of substance here or abroad, and still win. Remember the days of nitpicking who's foreign policy was better during the debates?
3. A candidate can run on a platform with racist, misogynistic undertones, and win.
4. A candidate can openly insult his opponent's looks in what should be a serious campaign, and get cheered.
5. A candidate successfully divided the country much more than it has been since segregation was a thing. I mean the KKK showed up to his rallies, and he started legit conversations of barring, deporting, and walling out people based on race.

This election was one, "Trump is Ivanka's babies daddy" away from being a Jerry Springer episode. We often say this or that candidate will ruin the presidency, Trump just flat out made it a joke. I look forward to 2020's election of Ben Afflek vs. Vince Mcmahon.

My policy worries are these. Trump undoes any good Obama's presidency actually accomplished, including progress on what were initially disasters like healthcare. He worsens our image even more abroad. In an attempt to appeal to Republican voters, he becomes a yes man for the fully Republican congress, and Senate, writing them blank checks. He cancels any cost of living adjustments with minimum wage talks going out the window. He budget cuts things that help the poor, and middle class (SS, welfare, foodstamps, ect).

I'm sure there's lots more, but I don't see him realistically banning gay marriage (abortion could be in trouble in the long run). I see Trump being a president that wears his true feelings to work. I.E. not being overly concerned with anyone not rich, and being misogynistic. Luckily I don't think he's going to make deportation, and wall building a real thing, and if he does hopefully the rest of our gov realizes that's stupid, and blocks him. I think the main takeaways in 4 years will be a weaker middle, and poor class. Women's rights making no progress (but not necessarily getting set back), and a still divided country. Then again I could be wrong as Trump's an unknown, and we could be knee deep in a war, welcoming our Russian overlords, while deporting middle eastern lesbians.

It seems the lot of you guys are focusing on Trump himself and not seeing the big picture. Trump may not care about those things, and he's at best one term president, which is only 4 years. But the whole major deal with this election is who gets to pick the last remaining justice in the supreme court, and that decision stays past the presidency. It doesn't matter if Trump cares about deportation, abortion, gay marriage, etc issues or not. It's whether the potentially highly conservative supreme court over turn a lot of these rulings, because the justice's Trump has listed are far right leaning. Add to that the liberal judges are all older than the conservative counterparts, they can pass away and be replaced by another conservative, thus more or less permanently swinging the supreme court on the right, at least until the next president cares to swing it back if one of the conservative judges step down or pass. This whole thing is a chain reaction.

The electoral college is a disaster for a democracy.

So tangential question, does Trump's election embolden the neo-Nazis, or does it placate them because they have their proxy in the White House?

it emboldens them because his election validates everything they believe.

when trump harassed Obama about his birth certificate to the point where he felt the need to show it again to put the stupid issue to rest...all I saw was an old white man saying the black man in the office of the presidency wasn't legitimate until HE said he was. Only to see 6 or 7 years later that same old white man stepping into the office with the ability and mandate to rollback and erase any and all accomplishments of that black man...

yeah it emboldens them.

I agree. And I'm also very disturbed to see a candidate who has violent rallies where his supporters attack the media and other protesters, and he openly mocked people with disabilities got into White House. And now this man with deplorable behaviors are to be used as a role model for parents to use with their children, and whose display will be shown next to the other 44 presidents?

This is incomprehensible.
