I've seen the trailer multiple times and like everything about it but my favorite part is still the speeders and chase with C-3PO, Finn and Poe. It gives me a ROTJ vibe and I'm sure it'll be a fun action scene.

Plus, Poe is my favorite new character and so I enjoy seeing him in action with other main characters

When compared to the other teaser trailers of the new trilogy, The Rise of Skywalker is the weakest. Both TFA and TLJ seemed more cohesive in their execution while this seemed just all over the place to reassure fans that they're returning to fan service. Also, gotta say, the Emperor returning in any capacity at this point kind of confuses me and further reduces Snoke's value unless he was secretly the Emperor's second apprentice.

I really hope not. It was my biggest fear of the post-TLJ backlash. But it would be foolish IMO

How is it all over the place?

I've watched trailer more times than I can count and it just gets better and better and better. This was pretty much on equal footing with the force awakens trailer from celebration 2015.

So what do you guys think is gonna be palpatines role in this? I mean the most likely scenario

That's one thing I loved, actually seeing the group together. TFA had it to a small extent, TLJ split them up completely.

Well, here's the thing. While I do think this film will be fan service heavy , I actually think its what JJ wanted to do anyway.

I think alot of fans of TLJ underestimated how much JJ really does have a different vision for SW than RJ ,and that the two really aren't on the same page as far as what these films should be. I don't mean the "let's consult on the script" together type of thing, I mean, they fundamentally disagree about what the SW franchise should be.

I do think alot of this film will be fan service heavy and fence mending with the fans to an extent. Wise or not, Disney has shown with James Gunn's rehiring, that they're willing to listen to respond to fan discontent and ,fair or not, there's been alot of it over the last couple of films.

At the same time, this is JJ's ball game, and its clear he's telling the story the way he wants to, and that story ain't "let the past die and move on to new characters". Whether's that's the right course or not depends on what side of the SW debate someone is on I suppose.

@OnTheAir showed me this awesome comparison!

Agreed on all points, that sequence looks incredible!

I'm going with.........Rey's creator. either through cloning or Force manipulation, I have a feeling Palpatine has something to do with Rey. maybe that is why Rey and co are seeking out the wreckage of the Death Star. maybe that's where she was "born."

or something.

otherwise, I really don't know why you would bring back the Emperor for the final film unless it's something personal related to the current characters.

it's not like for the past 2 films they've been teasing this larger threat ( in the Emperor ). But now they're suddenly reintroducing Palpatine into the equation.

I've found that the reaction of the SW fanbase to the trailer has been pretty much split along the same sides of TLJ debate.

It seems that alot those who liked or loved TLJ appear less then happy because of its throwback and perceived difference from Johnson, and those who hated TLJ ,are underwhelmed and wary because of Lucasfilms choices with the last two films.

In other words, it didn't change the needle as far as the polarized fanbase, which I figured would happen .

So many SW fans on both extremes have taken such a dogmatic and hardline stances on these new films that it's left little room for excitement for the new film. When you expend that much energy trying to prove "I'm right, and you're wrong!" it sort of leaves you drained.

The SW fanbase is definitely worn out from fighting itself for two years imo.

Honestly, I think this trailer did move the needle in a positive direction. The thing is, you really can't just go by Youtube comment sections with Star Wars. Even pre-TLJ, most comment sections had turned extremely sour on TFA. Negativity always thrives in comment sections, and most people who have a differing opinion don't even want to bother getting themselves involved with that because of how toxic that environment is.

My feeling that this trailer created some buzz is based on some of the trailer reactions I've seen. Tyrone Magnus is a good example. He made very clear before he watched the trailer that he hated TLJ and was looking for JJ to "save the franchise". At the end of the trailer, he legit turned into a child. His face was priceless!

It was probably the most shocked reaction I've ever seen from him for a trailer. And if you think of some of these popular reaction channels as "influencers" for the average fan, yeah, it did what it needed to. I also think the sort of people who truly believed they were going to start some sort of boycott revolution and that Episode IX was going to bomb are going to look very foolish come December.

And speaking as someone who is pro-TLJ, I didn't have a problem with the trailer at all. Literally every single film in this franchise has recontexualized the other films in some way, shape or form. It's a mythology that has been evolving as it goes from day 1, and I expect no different from this film. Just because I liked Rian Johnson's film (I have my own issues with it, but I think the level of backlash is ridiculously overblown) doesn't mean I think his ideas should be, or were meant to be, the final word on the saga. That would make no sense. It was the middle chapter in this trilogy. To me, trilogies and 3rd films are all about reconciling conflicting ideas and themes presented in the prior films into some sort of synthesis. I understand that there might be some TLJ fans who take the stance that anything that may contradict what they thought was true from TLJ is a retcon, but I think they are bit misguided in taking such a hardened stance especially before seeing the movie. The fact that Rian himself was so exuberantly positive about the trailer says it all.

Well to be clear, when I was talking about moving the needle , I was talking about the extremes of the polarized SW fanbase, not the causal SW fans, not SW fans who aren't entrenched one side or the other of either hating TLJ to the core or loving TLJ so much that they're offended by anything that may contradict it. , and not general audience viewers who weren't as invested in taking sides on TLJ. I wasn't referring to comments sections in youtube videos because you'll find everything from thoughtful statements to childish, bullying, racist etc stuff which is pointless to the topic . So yeah, I really don't take those into account. I do watch opinion videos like the one you posted and go on other SW messageboards just to gauge reaction from those fans who been on the very polarized ends.

As for your own position, I know you've been more open to how the third film could play out and how TLJ isn't the last word. We've discussed it before , so I know where you stand on it. I was referring to alot of TLJ fans who weren't as open to the possibility that TLJ would not be the last word and who also seemed to think Abrams would somehow not do anything that could contradict the creative choices RJ made. At the same time , I've seen alot of those who've spent two years hating TLJ and what Lucasfilm has done react numb and distrustful to the new teaser, so both extremes have pretty stayed in the same place.

I wouldn't even put Tyrone in the category I'm talking about in terms of extremes so his reaction isn't a great surprise to me.

I agree with what you're saying basically, but I'm talking about the real extremes. I should have made that more clear.

I think as a teaser, this is a good trailer. But at the end of the day, it's basically a "Hey guys, we exist!" trailer. With the added bonus of the title reveal. So it is better than a standard "we exist" trailer, but still not something I can call amazing either. But I felt that way for all the ST's teaser trailers.

This teaser seems to act as a good Rorschach test for people. If you hated VIII, its a course correction. If you loved VIII, its a potential regression back into Abrams' worst habits. Everyone seems to have gotten something different out of it.

I like TLJ but love this teaser and am so glad to have JJ back

Tyrone Magnus participated in Captain Marvel conspiracy theories. He is not the type of fan we want to try to win back.

I used to like youtube reactors like Akasan, Grace Randolph and Tyrone Magnus but eventually they just rubbed me the wrong way for some reason and now I can't stand them. Especially Grace

I don't know. I think TLJ discourse has saturated so much of Star Wars talk, that I we are putting stuff into the trailer that isn't there.

I love Tyrone and akasan, but my god do I hate grace Randolph. She's disgusting in every sense

Eh... I loved TLJ flaws and all, and don't see course correction in this trailer at all.

I find it interesting how JJ is talking about the past. I don't want to say he is avoiding TLJ, but I do find it telling that this has become about the entire saga.

Seconded. I mean if anything, the context of Palpatine still being around just makes me love the swerve of killing Snoke in the second act even more. So there's that.

I think he is treating this film as the conclusion of a trilogy AND the conclusion of a trilogy of trilogies, as he darn well should. And let's face it, from a marketing perspective- the conclusion of 9 films is a far grander pitch than the conclusion of 3.

I also a remember he gave an interview with Wired in 2015 where he was talking about the ST has to function as part of a larger 9 film arc as well as its own thing. Gotta find that, it was a great interview.

My buddy and I did a whole podcast over Celebration news, but especially the trailer and our hopes, fears and dreams about the trailer’s content. He loves TLJ, while I despise it and think TFA is far better. But we’re both hopeful about the film, while also qualifying some of our hopes about Leia and Lando in that we hope they get something original to do that still works well. Since I’m on Jedi Council Forums, I related the theories about what scenes from TFA they have left over to use:

- Leia mourning Han scene
- Leia deploying the warhammer weapon

We wound up shooting off into two tangents: whether or not there was an identifiable clear main lead in the Sequel Trilogy thus far (I’m behind Rey first, then Finn second, he feels it’s debatable and would like Kylo to take a run at it in this movie), and a small debate over the title. I’m a little cool on it, because the only way the title works for me is if Rey gets retconned into a Skywalker, since I find the other options either likely to deprive Rey of some focus or to try some lame metaphorical take that is just going to rub salt in the wound by trying to make a family drama I love into a brand name.

But weirdly enough, he disliked it even more.

Here’s the podcast, if you want some nerdy listening. ‎FranchiseWars on Apple Podcasts
