I thought it was effective... And then came the laugh. That made it go from a solid 7 or 8 of a trailer to a 10.

And then there's the title. I don't think that there is a chance JJ is going to go back on Rey from Nowhere. Here's my early speculation:

With a name like Rise of Skywalker I think this film will end out the current cycle of the saga by going back to the beginning. By that I mean the creation of Anakin by Sheev. Even with that conversation in RoTS there's not been FULL confirmation about what role Palpatine played in the conception of Anakin. Given rumors of the film possibly having something to do with the wiped memory of 3-PO I think we will be made aware of something to do with Anakin's mother. After all, not only has 3-PO been given the short end of the stick in the new trilogy so far, but... He's been there from the start, literally, as the droid made by Anakin and being under the roof of Shmi and her son even before Qui-Gon and Kenobi arrived on Tattoine. It may not even be the main thing in his memories that drives the plot but it will matter to Rey in some way. Again... I don't think she's a Skywalker and I don't think she's going to be a Palpatine, per se. But... Anakin was a slave from nowhere as well so... Well it's there to be seen is what I'll say. One has to ask what the origin of Shmi's surname in the first place? Was she born with it or did she choose it? It's in the title now. What's the significance?

I even have to say... I'm not sure the Emperor will end up being alive or even in some force astral form given the new canon's take that the only people to transfer out of their physical bodies to become one with the Force are Qui-Gon, Obi-Won, Yoda and now Luke. Granted... TLJ did make a case for the Force not being the sole property of the Jedi, so I suppose a Sith could pull it off too. Certainaly the EU made that a thing for decades. But... I think is more likely that some kind of recording or Holocron type relic will be in play here. Some last will and testament of Emperor Sheev Papatine the First.

I wouldn't even put it past them to make Rey not be a Skywalker by blood but to take up the name of Skywalker. Let me put it this way... The term "From a certain point of view" is going to be bandied about again.

I've actually been rewatching TLJ a lot recently. And... I feel the same about it when I first saw it. I love it. I have no issue with it's treatment of Luke and think it's only BIG issue is indeed that Finn's arc is undercooked, they wasted Phasma and that the Canto Bight portion was not conceptualized well... But after that I enjoyed it immensely. Any other flaws, and they are there, are nitpicks. It's a grand tale that still brings me to tears and the Rey, Kylo, Luke stuff is golden and the heart of the film. I REALLY hope that JJ doesn't give into fan complaints one single millimeter. There's NOTHING that needs a retcon. Just wrap this cycle up in a satisfying way and pave the way for an all new path for this fictional universe to travel down.

The teaser was freaking great. All of it, from that whole opening sequence, to Leia's theme, Lando, everything. But the one-two punch of hearing Palps' laugh AND the title reveal seriously turned me into a child.

My thing is, one of the main things I wanted with the sequel trilogy was for the big bad to stem from the lore in such a way that he would feel like an overarching threat for the whole saga. I was one of those who clung to Plagueis theories simply because that seemed to be the most organic way to get there. I had a lot of trouble just accepting that Snoke was Palpatine 2.0 and that was it. Because all due respect to Andy Serkis, in GFFA, he was never going to compare to McDiarmid's Sheev F***ing Palpatine. He is THE embodiment of pure evil in Star Wars, period. And while I wouldn't have been cool with bringing him back in Episode 7 (immediately undoing ROTJ)...now that we're here at the end of the saga, it feels like if there was ever a time to play that card, now is that time. You need those stakes to feel higher than ever.

Has he been pulling strings all along? Was Snoke his apprentice? Or will his return be an entirely new threat that emerges for this final chapter? No idea how his presence is going to be explained, but I'm really excited and intrigued to find out!

Also, looks like the teaser is an overall hit. All I've been saying for the past year and a half when people tell me "I don't care anymore..." is all it will take is one good teaser to bring you back in. Looks like JJ delivered that, at least for a lot of people.

I loved TFA its my second favorite star wars movie. I loved TLJ to but at the same time I was still dissapointend and the reason is because from trailers I thought it would be my favorite star wars movie. I known I am in the unpopular opinion in that ROTJ is the best star wars movie but I think a lot of that is because of vader/empero and the emotion of it all and the fact ewooks didn't bother me at all. I am going to try to not over hype it because of the fact that I thought TLJ would be the best star wars ever yet its my 4th favorite. Even though I loved TLJ the reason I thought TFA was a solid amount better was because of a few things. 1. Rey and finn being together I loved in TFA because they have so much chemistry and I really missed that in TLJ. 2. Humor I didn't think the humor in TLJ was bad but I think TFA handled humor better than any other star wars movie ever. 3. Pacing I thought TLJ like first half of the movie is to slow. Once it got to like Rey going to Kylo man the movie picked up and I love love the end with Luke and Kylo has it was so different and creative and the music when luke like gets there and how it bulids up to him walking out is some of the best music in any of the star wars movies!

TBH, I'm mixed. I liked TFA, but hated, hated TLJ. I wanted to like it, but walked out of the theater so indifferent to the series that I didn't care if I saw another new Star Wars film again. In fact, I still haven't seen Solo, despite Han being my favorite Star Wars character. I just lost my interest.

I honestly didn't find the trailer to be too interesting at first. Take away the Luke voice over, and the first 50 seconds was just sand. Unlike the TFA trailer where the music hit, the Falcon soared in, and I was geeking out. But then they hit the nostalgia button. Luke's voice over, and a few other surprises from former characters. My nostalgia glasses popped back on for a second, and I started to wonder if I should see it.

I've seen the other 8, and this will most likely be the last movie featuring the original cast. I'm most likely going to end up caving, and see it. Which makes me feel like a sucker for watching the follow up to something I didn't enjoy, just based on nostalgia. I'm just not sure if it will be at the theater, or on digital. The other problem is my friends, and even close family disliked TLJ as well. So if I see it in theaters I'm not sure if I can get anyone else to tag along, lol.

That said, I'm glad so many of you enjoyed the trailer. I'm not trying to bash it, just kinda venting my confusion, lol.. Sorry if I was being a downer in the middle of you guys being hyped for a new trailer.

Lando had me freaking out! :jd: Can't wait to see him in it.

Overall, it looks kinda cool, but I really wasn't super wowed by it at all. We'll see though. As for the name of the movie, I don't like it one bit.

Not every trilogy needs to be done that way. Look at the Thor trilogy. Taika Waititi came in and continued on from TDW in a bonkers way, and it was awesome. Sometimes, a new voice is best. Sometimes it is not. But keeping the same director is not the only way to make a satisfactory trilogy.

Yeah that is true I think the main thing is if you are going to do a trilogy to have a like set idea of what man things you want to have happen. Now like how you are going to get there can change but the big ideas should be set out. With different people being the director the Apes trilogy that just ended that I love had a different director for the first movie and than some one else did 2 and 3. So it had 2 different directors yet all movies are really good.

The trailer looks awesome: so powerful. I haven't seen The Force Awakens or The Last Jedi yet, but I'm gonna binge-watch them now, for Star Wars celebration, and then I'll be prepared for this one. It looks so good! My heart melted when I saw Carrie Fisher.
And the Death Star! And Palpatine! It's so exciting!

Wait you didn't see FA or LJ? Have you seen the other star wars movies? TFA saved the franchise for me after the terrible 1-2 and I liked 3 but man it was still flawed. TFA had that 4-6 magic fell to it back. LJ I loved to but not like TFA.

Holy ****... that makes sense. I just thought she put on more muscle, because she was super thick in Express as well. Well, hopefully she is doing better. The woman is a marvel. Also, considering the rock she had on her hand during the panel, soon to make a young man very happy.

Didn't known she was having issues but she looked great in the movie but she always does. Lol yeah she is going to make me very happy. But I didn't even notice the rock and so many women wear rings so like how do you known if its that kind of ring lol

So i was seeing the "jeremy with another video" live feed and when the trailer ended, he shouted something along the line of "No no no.....I don't like ray's stuff. That was like matrix". He really seems full of hatred most of the time.

This trailer is universally liked by all star wars fan. It was not the best trailer they could have put, but it made a good job of telling them that "we made a mistake in the previous movie, we will undo that, pls support us again" and you know what, it works. I am pumped for episode IX after being totally turned off after the last jedi.

Can you explain what in particular makes you think this? What specifically about the trailer indicates this was the message of the trailer or the story it barely reveals in it's content.

JJ did seem to indicate Sheev is around. Like we will see the Emperor. Now I really do wonder if Matt Smith is going to end up being a younger version of him. Perhaps in the past.

TLJ: Forget the past!
This one: Here's Kylo putting together the helmet! Here's the saber put together! HERE'S PALPATINE

Yep...no undoing at all lol

Well yeah he is gonna be there. I am sure it's not just a ghost or some creepy voice floating without a body lol that whole cheating death stuff was there was a reason

I'm open to all things being possible... But I also remember JJ telling me as a Trek fan with a straight face that Cumberbatch wasn't playing Khan. So, you'll forgive me if I choose to take any public statement from him with a boulder's worth of salt.

That said... Smith would be a perfect choice for some version of Sheev.

Granted... He was quoted recently saying he wasn't in this... So again... Mystery boxes abound. ;)

I actually think we might have a ghostly Palpatine for a bit, but he will be in full force for the third act. Maybe as Matt Smith. There is going to be a lot of the "past" in this film. Past we have not explored yet. A young Luke, potentially Anakin, definitely Palps. Probably going to have something to do with Rey.

I don't think he shows that, and it isn't a thing. If he was hiding it? Yeah. But he isn't, which is why I expect it. Especially when he talks about them taking on the greatest evil. The rumors of the Beyond and perhaps what the Knights of Ren have been up to seem to make a lot more sense now.

I think it's telling that the Kylo puts the mask back isn't necessarily some kind of retcon or the like.

Kylos gaslights himself. That's a huge part of TLJ. He's not like Rey who comes to terms with her past and pain in TLJ. He talks a good game about killing the past but he wants to replay it all again. His character of course still holds on to things. He holds onto his resentment and anger at Luke, at his father, at Snoke etc. He says he wants to break from the Sith and Jedi but ends up doing exactly what the Sith do by destroying Snoke and taking his place. I don't see some public mea culpa on Lucasfilm's part I see continuity of character in the actions of a villain that above all, deceives himself.

But that's me.

Rian's idea was to destroy the mask because he didn't like it and so we can see Driver's face (like we somehow couldn't in TFA). He said it himself. Whatever happened at the end of TLJ, it didn't seem like they were bringing it back. JJ brought it back. I don't think it will be a "retcon" but JJ doing what he likes. He likes the helmet, and will use it accordingly.

Hey... Anything can happen. Which is actually exciting, and Palps showing up hale and hearty is okay in my book as long as it's got a decent explanation.

That out there... "JJ said..." is... problematic for me. Dude seemed to major in how to play us fans like a fiddle on multiple levels. Him saying "Palpatine is there" could end up meaning all sorts of things... From a certain point of view. :halo:

I am going to take my shot... Matt Smith does end up one of the Knights of Ren, and Palps takes over his body.

Yeah but in terms of the story I think it goes along with how much bull**** Kylo was slinging in TLJ, especially to himself. He has a hissy fit and destroys the helmet, and goes on about how he's walking away from the past... Only to seek refuge in the familiar again. He can't grow from his experiences. He is trapped. His new trap is probably obsession with Rey, whom I think is totally over being sympathetic to him and sees clearly what her mission is.

Not a fan of Smith, he just doesn't have the presence required to play a cool villain. I think he is definitely the younger Palpatine but hopefully he isn't actually the big bad the whole movie builds up, wasn't that something that happened in that awful Terminator movie or I may be misremembering things
