The Expendables 3 - Part 1

Should i see this MR. Bolton? :b

Antonio Banderas is one of the best parts of the movie

These films(this one in particular from the sounds of it) would have owned the 90's. What a shame.

Wow, what a sad end for the franchise. It's almost ironic that the whole point of the PG-13 rating was to rake in more money and it ended up hurting it instead of helping it. I think we've seen the last of this franchise unfortunately and its sad because Sly has said he wants to do more.
Sweet, sweet irony.

I feel like the series never hit its stride.

While it's cool to have all the 80's action stars in one franchise, the films didn't have memorable action scenes. In fact, the action is probably no better than a direct-to-DVD movie, and that might be an insult to some of the movies in that particular market!
Yep. This is a series what never what it could have been. I get the nostalgia, heck I grew up addicted to these movies, but they did nothing worthwhile with it. They didn't make good movies. This series has more in common "A Good Day to Die Hard" then "Rocky Balboa".

They should have got some real screenwriters, wrote some actual characters and gave the films some actual stakes. There seems to be this bizarre idea that because they are based on the 80s action films, these films didn't need to be good, but when you see these homages in other genres, the best are always good films.

I think the final action scene in EX2 with everyone assembled was for me what this entire franchise should have been. That was a fantastic set piece and i wanted more of that. More of these action icons having fun with each other and tearing s*** up like they used to do.

I also feel that the series never really hit its stride or found a way to really take full advantage of the nostalgia factor. The closest would be the second film (which perhaps ironically for me, I liked the least). I think the films did a poor job making the individual Expendables interesting because they were pretty dull when they weren't blowing things up. The dialogue for most of the films wasn't good, the jokes often missed their marks, and I don't think the second and third films knew what to do with their villains. The films kept getting by on the cool nostalgia factor and perhaps that's starting to wear thin in the US at least. Overseas markets might feel differently.

It seems like Sly was attempting to counter the fading interest by bringing in new people, but I don't know if any of them will bring in enough new viewers. It appears they won't.

Even though this franchise hasn't lived up to the hype I still would like to see one more, with several more action stars to get as many as possible in the franchise.

I think international numbers will allow Sly to scrape together a 4th entry. Sly has to decide if he wants to make the people who will actually pay to see these films happy or teenagers who never would be caught ****ing dead seeing these films no matter how PG:13 they are. I don't like the PG:13 crap but the biggest problem is that the films aren't entertaining or good enough.

That's the thing... these films were never going to appeal to new generations.

Why are they gonna watch a bunch of crusty old soldiers shooting people when they can watch superheroes who are literally walking tanks or cosmic bad asses? Superheroes are the new action stars.

Sly was better off keeping these films hard R throwbacks to the 80s glory days. Make em for 50 million a pop. Loads of blood squibs. Loads of swearing. Inventive and outrageous kills. The whole lot.

That is what I don't get. How did making this PG-13 help? What people see these for is nostalgia. Why would kids and teens go and see these films? There is no connection and they aren't good.

I also enjoyed Mel Gibson, and of course, Wesley Snipes! :awesome:

Rhonda Rousey was as wooden as to be expected and everyone else was just so-so. The action was cool, over the top, exactly what you'd expect from a film like this.

7/10

It didn't help at all. The film got loads of negative publicity from fans so it hurt the film if anything. And for the record I call ******** on the leak killing this film. The underwhelming previous films, the watered down rating and the pointless young Expendables angle is what hurt this latest film.

I haven't seen one Expendables movie, and I won't be starting now.

Not even comparing it to The Raid movies, they coudlve gotten action scenes as good as the Bourne movies. Hell I saw Let's Just Be Cops and it had a very brief chase in it that's more interesting than a lot of the action scenes in the Expendables franchise.
That's a problem.
When it comes to the first movie I always cite the fact that they had Randy Couture, Jet Li, and Stone Cold: three "professional" athlete fighters and they couldnt get one decent fight scene.

Shouldve gotten John Woo at some point

Turn in your man card now. Everyone with a penis attached to them is required to view one of these films in its entirety.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I watched the first in theaters, Netflix'ed the second one. I guess I'll watch this one the same way as the second, but I honestly don't have any motivations.

Once the novelty of seeing all these action stars from the 80's and 90's come together, the movies end up be flawed and forgettable action movies that really should went straight to DVD/ Blu Ray. Sad to say but it's just time for Sly and Co to call the quits on these movies.

I will say one thing, for some reason the final fights seem to always be disappointing. Stallone vs JCVD in EX2 and Stallone vs Gibson in EX3 should have both been EPIC. It's not every day you see legends like that go toe-to-toe and they dropped the ball both times. I'm wondering if its a fault of the director or just the fact that the aging actors just don't have it in them anymore to physically perform epic fight scenes.

To be fair though, in EX3 there was a reasonable excuse because there literally wasn't enough time for Sly to have a long drawn out battle with Gibson, but I feel like the writers and the director could have found a way to make it much more satisfying.

I liked Stallone vs. JCVD in the second film, but the Stallone/Gibson fight in this was pretty damn anti-climactic.

I liked the movie, but I can see why it's flopping and people just aren't showing any enthusiasm for it anymore. The novelty is running thin, and the PG-13 rating appeals to people that don't care about a movie like this to begin with while alienating the people that do care.

The finale IMHO was overwrought. Turning this PG-13 was pointless.

I feel like they wanted to make the finale like Avengers or something, but it was just ridiculous to me. In the first movie, I thought it basically worked. They're a bunch of hardass mercs storming a military dictator's compound. They had the element of surprise.

I like Ronda Rousey, and her fighting looked good, but I didn't buy into her dialogue as well. I thought the Chinese sidekick from the second movie was more believable in a sort of mentor protege role with Barney. I don't get why her first fight scene in the bar was so obscured. Poorly shot.

The plot was convoluted. Movie constantly goes in different direction. Way too many characters. They brought back Jet Li and he didn't even do anything.

I thought Harrison Ford complaining about Statham's accent was humorous considering that he was mumbling through the whole thing.

Should i see this MR. Bolton? :b

Well it depends on whether you liked the first two films. It's the weakest of the three and very flawed, but it does have some charm, especially Antonio's character.

Basically, if you've got nothing better to do and time to kill then yeah sure.

Saw it yesterday and for the most part it was alright, it's pretty much my junk food for films. There's some good and some not so good in this one (like the previous 2 only less bloody). I will say Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, and Arnold Schwarzenegger did a great job in it...especially Mel who had some great monologues.

And I have to say...Ronda Rousey is slightly better than Gina Carano in the acting department.

Yea it's a bad movie. It's supposed to be an 80s style exploitation action movie. But it's had it's balls chopped off.

People say ratings don't matter. Well i ask this... would Commando or Predator or Rambo or Lethal Weapon be the same films if they were neutered? Hell no.

The problem with Sly's idea of making it PG-13 to bring in new fans is... current generations of movie goers aren't really impressed by the type of action older generations were. But neutering this film Sly has alienated the people who do actually give a **** about these kinds of movies. Those people are me and you, people who grew up with ultra violent and over the top 80s action movies.

So what has happened here is simple. Making it PG-13 has alienated the people who want to see old school 80s action with ridiculous blood squibs and brutal kills. And this kinda action just doesn't impress younger generations who have grown up with Michael Bay movies and superheroes
.

This, all day this . I liked the first 2, own both on blu-ray, but my desire to see the 3rd movie has dropped a lot since finding out the rating.

I have plenty of movies out there to watch for PG-13 action, its not what I go to an Expendables movie for. I honestly may wait until it hits BD because I think it will get an R-Rating there.

Maybe, if we're lucky, they will release an unrated version of the move on blu ray.

^I think that is what will happen at some point, given how many are complaining about the rating of this one.
