I think the whole Ben being a child abuse victim is wayyyy overblown. That was his older brother picking on him, and getting physical with him. There are definitely older siblings like that out there. And Ben showed no signs of abuse. Plus his mom in this movie was a bad-a** and defended him.

The scene came from out of nowhere, and escalated very quickly with Ben's mom. The actress was very melodramatic. I couldn't take the moment seriously, especially since it ended so quickly. What was the point of having it in there in the first place, especially since it isn't referenced in the movie again (to my knowledge, that is)?

I thought it was weird and awkward.

It was weird and awkward. I guess it was meant to show Reed and Grimm both don't fit in very well at home perhaps? And that's why they have to look out for one another? Idk. But i agree with you.

I think what a lot of people take from that scene is that it doesn't just look like two brothers fighting but, actually has a more abusive tone. I read that out of the scenes cut there were more scenes with Ben's family that dealt with the abuse. Though admittedly we don't know that for sure, but I think that would be consistent with what we saw and with Trank's past approach with Chronicle.
