The scene you're describing is exactly kind of balance I would like to see. It doesn't have to be a big dumb action movie. Give the SWAT guys enough personality ala Macready, Childs, Windows, etc from The Thing, and you can have a Friday the 13th movie that's gives you reason not root for the psychopath and gives Jason license to get more creative with his kills given his prey's skill-sets.

But the scene I'm describing didn't actually show Michael killing anyone. Just the dead bodies being discovered. So how is this a balance of what you want to see? Don't you want to actually see Jason taking these SWAT guys?

I do, but you want to have scenes like the one from Halloween 4 to balance everything out.

I could not disagree more. Part 6 is the best of the movies post Final Chapter, but that's not saying much.

Part 6 has an Alice Cooper soundtrack, and that's all I need to put it way up the list of the best films.

Yeah, but Jason isn't grounded... at all. He may not have become a zombie until part 6, but he's always been ridiculous.

I want to see them put him up against people that are an actual threat to him. It doesn't need to be explosions and one-liners like Predator, but watching him butcher teenagers for 30 years has gotten stale. If the next film is just Friday 2009 again, what's the point? This aspect of the property is why this property is in shambles. Nobody knows what to do with it and nobody wants to take any risks.

I was going to suggest just making Jason fight the Predator, but Mortal Kombat already did that.

Honestly not showing Michael slaughtering the police in Halloween 4 was one of the parts that I didn't like about that film, and I liked it quite a bit overall. If you're going to do that, then show it.

If The Terminator was able to make Arnold slaughtering an entire police precinct feel slasher/horror movie-esque, which it did, then it's doable.

"Horror" can be done in different ways. The idea that even the people who are trained to protect and serve cannot stop Jason's rampage, is a very horrifying notion imo.

I think it made H4 better not to show him laying waste to the police department. Sometimes it does work out better to show less, and I think this was one of those cases.

I love Jason Lives, it's one of my favourites too however I know the series can't go back there.

Part III is the weakest of the core 4 but I've grown to love that movie. Brooker's Jason is brilliant and I actually think the look with the mask is the best of the series.

What high standards you have

It gives it breathing room. My thing with these long running franchises is I want these properties to avoid doing the same thing over and over again and take proper risks with material within logical reason. Turning Jason into a body swapping slug and sending him into space was just ****ing stupid.

I was ok with Friday 2009 because it was a reboot and I honestly thought it was going to be a lot worse. I consider it to be the best of the Platinum Dunes cash grabs, but I want to see something new in the highly unlikely event we get another film in the next few years.

The video game that's coming out in a few weeks is the only thing that's really going on with this franchise at the moment and it looks amazing because they took the concept and applied it to a multiplayer game in an era dominated by modern shooters, that's a ballsy move. It also enables me to be behind the mask or on the end of the machete.

I find part one to be the weakest of the first 4. Even though three doesn't get things down as greatly as two and four, imo it got a lot more right than part one. Namely not having a final showdown where the villain resorts to playground slaps.

Okay, this is a little left-field, but speaking of Pamela, would you guys ever be interested in a sort of alternate universe film where both Pamela & Jason are alive and operating in the same space? Essentially a Psycho/Texas Chain Saw hybrid on steroids (but minus the cannibalism).

Fair enough. I think it'd be interesting to at least explore, even if it were relegated to animation and not live action. Takes the series in a new direction that's not permanent. And would afford the opportunity to show Jason interacting with his mother more.

Above all else, Elias needs to be physically introduced into this series at some point...whether he appears in flashbacks, the present or both. They should've let McLoughlin do it back in part 6 like he initially planned.

Oooh, I like that idea! See, if they follow through with that, I think it'd be so cool to have Pamela be a main part of the series with Elias being a recurring character & little Jason being in the mix (up until the drowning, anyway).

Also, I gotta admit when my foot was I my mouth. You said a while back an anthology style movie could work for Halloween & Michael Myers and I didn't think it was a good idea but over time I'm starting to see that idea is actually pretty genius and could be applied to Jason too. Would even afford the opportunity to give Jason a few different designs throughout the same film.

My issue with a Friday series in the vain of Bates Motel is it would just be Twin Peaks again which is what Bates Motel, Riverdale, etc all are.

I honestly think David Lynch brought Twin Peaks back in reaction to everyone ripping him and Mark Frost off.

I can see why you'd be worried about it being too similar but I think there could be enough there to differentiate the two. The thing is, it'd be a series that you wouldn't be able to drag out endlessly. It'd have to have perfect pacing in showcasing Jason's childhood life, Pamela snapping and Jason's subsequent return.

Would probably work better as a Netflix series that could run about four seasons of 12 to 13 episodes. Something to that extent could be effective with the proper team assembled.

Thanks, I know it would never happen but with the fan base as it is and everyone loving different versions or things about Jason. I see my anthology film idea as a way of pleasing (almost) everyone.

They would need to play up that these people were always crazy which A, cheapens the mythology and B, demonizes a special needs child.

Bates Motel works because Norman Bates has always been crazy and his mother, in one form or another, has always been his greatest enemy. That element has always been a part of that character.

They would need to play up that these people were always crazy which A, cheapens the mythology and B, demonizes a special needs child.

Me too. Sorry I didn't specify further but that was what I meant. While delving deeper into Pamela's character, you can also show more of Jason's childhood. By more, I mean specifically showing Elias as a potentially abusive father (if that's the route to be taken) and how badly he was treated by his peers.

So I've been thinking where is best to set the new Friday the 13th film? Given Jason's been to many locations in the series where would you like the next film to be set?

Here's a few options:

1) An open Camp Crystal Lake - throughout the series Jason hasn't ever really been killing at Camp Crystal Lake when it's actually open. Throughout the series you have had the Camp been refurbished for opening (Friday the 13th [1980], Freddy vs Jason), closed off (Friday the 13th Part II, Friday the 13th [2009]), renamed (ok so Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives is an open Camp but the place was renamed so it doesn't quite count in my opinion) or just ignored and treated as an after thought mostly. To see Jason return to an open Camp Crystal Lake with counsellors and kids would be awesome.
2) A closed Camp Crystal Lake - much like Friday the 13th 2009 (which was mostly set at a closed Camp Crystal Lake) you could have Jason stalk teens there again, maybe they're camping out there or maybe it's a Camp Crystal Lake been refurbished just like in the original. Maybe you could even use the same idea as the 2009 reboot but set it in the winter to differentiate it.
3) Higgins Haven - how cool would it be to have the new film set here. They could have it be set in modern day and teen go to the Haven to party. You could even have the events of III as canon but some characters loosely mentioning Jason Voorhees killing teens there in the 80s. You could even have a Friday film set at Higgins Haven in the 80s and pay homage to Part III.
4) A nearby camp/house - much like many of the sequels you could set it somewhere nearby (much like Higgins Haven above) and have a few or a group of the teens enter Jason's domain (like in Part II) and that's what brings Jason's attention to them.
5) Somewhere completely new - he went New York, Space and Elm Street maybe they try again and take Jasonout of the woods. Maybe to the suburbs? Etc

My personal hopes are they set it at Higgins Haven, they could rebuild the set easily and maybe this time do it near an actual lake. I'd want it to be set in the 80s with some Harry Manfredini score. Incorporate the idea of a group entering Camp Crystal Lake which is what disturbs and upsets Jason. Make that the reason why he goes after these teens. Don't remake III of course, create new characters and new kills (although paying homage to one or two classics wouldn't harm) and go for it. Hopefully the retro vibes of the game can make the movie studio realise this is a good way to go for the next instalment. Also it sounds pretty perfect to me doing a familiar location in the 80s with original score for the 13th instalment.
