Square Enix Detail Where Their Losses Are Coming From. April 8, 2013 . 12:10pm

Square Enix are incurring an extraordinary loss in an “effort to sort out items not achieving expected revenue levels, through scrapping those items and terminating production”

In a recent financial briefing, former Square Enix president Yoichi Wada discussed how Square Enix arrived at their sales forecasts for some of the biggest games they’ve released over the last 12 months. The three titles in question are: Sleeping Dogs, Hitman Absolution and Tomb Raider.

As previously reported, despite high sales, all three games sold below expectations in North America and Europe. Wada shares:
“Let’s talk about Sleeping Dogs: we were looking at selling roughly 2~2.5 million units in the EUR/NA market based on its game content, genre and Metacritic scores. In the same way, game quality and Metacritic scores led us to believe that Hitman had potential to sell 4.5~5 million units and 5~6 million units for Tomb Raider in EUR/NA and Japanese markets combined.

“Of course, we want to hedge risk in budgeting these units directly into the forecast, therefore we base the forecast on 80-90% of the total sales potential of each title. However, it is disappointing that our results fell below these marks.”
For reference, Sleeping Dogs has moved 1.75 million copies, Hitman Absolution 3.6 million and Tomb Raider 3.4 million.

Wada says that Square Enix’s revenue model is outdated and that the company’s selling capacity has been “far weaker than we ever imagined” in North America and Europe. As a result, Square Enix are incurring an extraordinary loss in an “effort to sort out items not achieving expected revenue levels, through scrapping those items and terminating production”.

Some of the content being scrapped was in development at studios in Japan. A loss of more than 2 billion yen originates from Japanese studios, where certain productions have already been halted and work scrapped. Additionally, Square Enix say that they recently launched a new division in the U.S. to develop casual games for phones, but were forced to close it down after things didn’t go well. The company expects a 1 billion yen loss as a result of its closure. Total losses resulting from this “Loss on Disposal of Content” at Square Enix amount to 4 billion yen.

A further loss of 3.5 billion yen is expected from “Loss on Evaluation of Content,” where Square will make downward revisions to their prospective yields for every game title and overhaul their business models. A 2 billion yen loss in this regard will come from Japan and 1.5 billion yen from Europe and North America.

Additionally, a company-wide loss of 2 billion yen is expected in relation to re-structuring Square Enix. In total, all of these losses amount to 10 billion
yen.
While console game sales were sluggish, social games are showing “solid performance,” Wada says, with continuous growth in net sales. Square expect net sales from their Social Gaming and Others category to reach 20 billion yen in fiscal year 2013. Profit margins continue to improve steadily and Square say that their social game development teams exchange expertise with each other on a daily basis. Over the next year, Square plan to focus on providing social games to China and Korea, and gradually expand to the entire Asian region.

In the wake of the company’s losses, Wada will be stepping down as Square’s president. As previously reported, Yosuke Matsuda will be replacing Yoichi Wada as Square Enix’s new president.

I actually just backed my first project ever on indiegogo. A short film/tv pilot. It was $1 to get a digital copy of the final product.

Shovel Knight is the 2nd Kickstarter I've backed. I backed The Banner Saga last year (mainly for the art). They missed their target Nov 2012 deadline but they've added a lot more since they received a lot more funding and their multiplayer beta is free on Steam.

I think when I get a job and have some money to spread I will start backing more projects.

Great to see Absolution do so well. I dont know why they would consider that a loss tho, that game sold more than any of the previous Hitman titles save for Silent Assassin. Hitman has never, nor will ever be a mass market game. Thinking Hitman and Tomb Raider would snag 5 - 6 million in sales was just stupid.

TellTale's Jurassic Park game is 7.50 on Steam right now. As someone who absolutely loves Jurassic Park, would I regret buying it for that price? I understand the gameplay isn't great, but if it has a decent story I'd be willing to suffer through it.

I thought it was more the other way around, the gameplay was decent but the story was kinda eh. It has its dumb moments but the dinosaurs are really awesome, they look fantastic and the death scenes are really great. 7.50 I'd say is a decent price but I was willing to go through a meh game just because I love the franchise.

Yeah exactly what I was going to say. Both games have been a success but due to the nature of the product, however good you make a Hitman game the potential market for it is not as large as the very biggest mass market games. These analysts are dumb enough that they would call CoD a financial disapointment for not getting to $2B every year. Tomb Raider also is still new & very highly regarded...it probably won't be that far away from 5m in sales near the end of its run. I'm sure many of the people who haven't bought it yet (me for eg) are still intending to buy it new at some stage.

Thanks for posting though Zenith I like reading this sort of stuff, hopefully by more realistic analysts next time!

BioWare co-founder talks EA's influence, beer, and gamer negativity

BioWare co-founder Dr. Greg Zeschuk may have traded in RPGs for craft beer, but the ex-developer still has plenty to say about his former profession. In a phone interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Zeschuk explains why he's open to games consulting and how he doesn't game as much as he used to.

Zeschuk also rejects any notion of Electronic Arts being a negative influence on BioWare. "They don't second-guess you, they don't say you shouldn't do that," he explains. "We had complete creative control over a lot of it; some fans didn't like some of it and some of it was experimental, quite frankly."

Finally, Zeschuk has some interesting insights into gamer culture and the negativity that surrounded BioWare's recent projects. "At the end of the day, for every one person complaining there are a whole bunch of other people who actually like it," Zeschuk says. And while he admits to enjoying the fact that beer lovers aren't prone to arguments and invective like gamers, there's something to be said for that level of engagement. "I think the problem with gamers is you're damned if you do and you're damned if you don't. But what it talks to is the power of games as art and the power of games as a medium where people get really, really passionate," Zeschuk explains.

They were voted worst company in America for the second year in a row. You can tell its an online voting because only the internet would vote EA worst company in America when in fact they're not even close. Sure they're not the greatest but far from the worst

I think he's kind of wrong. Maybe the negativity was worse than it should have been but if they'd nailed that ending most of those complainers would be hailing the ME trilogy as one of the best ever in gaming. (is regardless to me)

I don't know about that. Mass Effect has a whole slew of problems throughout the entire trilogy that are worse than the ending.

Oh you know people would have, internet corners of elitism like Neogaf? Maybe not.

But come on.

I never played them till recently but all I read was positives everywhere on the internet before ME3 (even with ME1's clunkiness), more so than the vast majority of other big franchises. Maybe the bad taste has coloured prior perceptions? The 1st 2 are one (2) of the only old games that I've played that have fully lived up to what people have said about them.

Apparently, they think Metacritic is an indicator of how much they should be selling.

I can't even muster a joke with how stupid that is.

The Sweetest Thing You'll See Today Is A 90-Year-Old Grandmother Losing It Using The Oculus Rift

[YT]pAC5SeNH8jw[/YT]

Here's what happens when the 90-year-old grandmother of Imagimind's Paul Rivot has an Oculus Rift headset strapped to her head.

To be fair, that's about how I'd react using the thing, and I'm up to my eyeballs in video games every day. Lord only knows how many receptors she had left unfried after this.

Haha. I don't know much about the Oculus Rift. Wouldn't mind seeing what it's like.

I was great at that game!

It's just too bad they didn't get Bruce Campbell to voice Ash.
