Yeah, Mario 3D Land wouldn't be as good without the 3D. It's so stupid to see people saying "now you have a choice!" No, there's a slider that allows you to turn off the 3D..we've always had a choice.

This, to me, seems to be a bit of a desperation move.. Quick, get another DS out the door so we can make more money quick!

It's desperation, I guess, in the same way the 3DS XL, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL, GBA SP, and GBA Micro were desperation? Nintendo has been redesigning the hell out of their handhelds for two generations now, this isn't surprising at all. The only surprising thing is maybe the lack of 3D, but...meh, I'm not even that surprising.

They are also continuing to add more unneeded confusion to their product lines.

"Where are all the DS 2 games? I only see ones for the 3DS?"

They are still struggling with the whole Wii U is a Wii add-on nonsense, I don't know why the keep making things confusing.

I will say, making this a non-flipped is really odd. It just looks odd to me with both screens on one surface:

Anyway, here's the promo pic with those Nintendo game dates. Also has dates for A Link to The Past and Mario Party 3DS:

GI wouldn't put the Micro along those as it was a last ditch move to get people to buy more gba's before the DS. The 2DS doesn't really come as a redesign to me but more of a back track (like the Micro) . I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo announces it' next gen hand held next year.

I assume they'll start adding "compatible with 2DS" on boxes now, or there have something on the box to clarify that all 3DS games are compatible with it. But yeah, it was never a good title. But without the 3D, calling it the 3DS doesn't make a lot of sense either.

Yup, like Goldfarb said on Twitter..

Maybe. But I don't think so, the 3DS has only been out for 2 years. I'd say we've got at least another redesign before they announce the next handheld, maybe two.

I guess we'll see.. I can't wait for the 2DSXLi3DSMini version. I swear if MS and Sony did the redesign Nintendo does people wouldtar and feather them for it.

I think most people, from the beginning, questioned the name. It was bad marketing, but it's out there and it's not like they can change it now after 2 years on the market. With 2DS, though, I don't know. When you take out the 3D, the name of the system makes little sense. You could just say, **** it, and call it a 3DS mini/micro/whatever even though it's devoid of 3D, but Ninty doesn't want to do that, I guess.

Honestly, I don't think it'll be a huge issue for this as it possibly was from the DS to 3DS. The 3DS has enough presence now, and has been out for such a short time, that I think people are going to naturally assume it's a redesign. Plus, I think simply adding compatible with all 3DS software on the box will probably be enough. I may be wrong, though.

I just don't see them announcing a new handheld so soon, especially since the 3DS seems to be entering it's prime with MH4 and Pokemon coming.

It's not that big see it happening.. I just wouldn't be shocked if it did.

****, I would. I don't think there's ever been a case of a successful system's lifespan being that short.

Lol, who was asking for the 3DS XL? Or the DS Lite? Or the DSi? Or the DSi XL? Or the GBA SP (well, that only is kind of an exception, since the backlight was a big issue)? Or the GBA Micro? It's a Nintendo handheld redesign. It's like being surprised at Nintendo releasing a Zelda game at this point.

Haha good point although I had no idea Nintendo has released that many handhelds.

Yeah, it started with the GBA, but they went insane with the DS.

And they all sold good so they're doing something right. They own the handheld market and they won't be losing it anytime soon

Isn't it normal nowadays to get improved bigger and/or slimmer versions of current handhelds? Out of all their XL, Lite, or whatever releases, only the 2DS seems weird to me. Losing the 3D feature, and flip-close, which makes it now some weird ass tablet thingy, with two small, separate screens.

Yea i cant figure out the 2DS thing, the others make sense, to a degree, but this one. I cant process it.

I do see some logic to it. I said this in another thread, but I think Nintendo wants a lower priced model on the market. And since they've already done a major price cut on the mainline model (from $269.99 to $169.99), I think putting out a cheaper to make model was the alternative. And with the 2DS, they now have a good bracket going on: You have that model for the low end consumer (those on tighter budgets or just getting for their kids), the mainline model ($169.99) for more "average" consumers (those with better budget), and the XL ($199.99) for the more 'core gamers who want the best out there. I also doubt it's completely a coincidence this was announced at the same time the Vita has been officially slashed to competitive pricing.

It's not necessary, no. But really, outside maybe the DS to the DS Lite and the GBA to the GBA SP, none of those redesigns I mentioned were all that needed. However, I can see more logic behind it than I think most are giving credit for. The name is an issue, but they already ****ed that up a long time ago anyway.
