Looks like they can get away with it in the handheld market as they've been ultra-successful in spite of it. Game console identity is possibly more important.

I think it's probably more an issue of cost. It costs more to manufacturer and sell a console than it does a handheld. These things are probably very cheap to produce and there's possibly low risk to doing a redesign and having it flop. Well, maybe. Or it could just be that Nintendo say how well the SP redesign did, and even how decently the Micro sold despite being a useless piece of ****, and went crazy.

It seesm they're good at reading the wrong things into why some of their products are very successful and this leads to mistaken future policy.

I'll say it again, Nintendo's best course of action with whatever hardware they cook up next is to make a unified handheld/console hybrid. Hopefully without a confusing name.

Nintendo Entertainment Tablet. Can stream the game's video output to your TV (like Chromecast wireless HDMI dongle but better. Wii U Off TV play in reverse).

Or they could just make two separate devices that play...exactly the same games. The console device could still use motion controls--the games would detect what hardware they are being run on and adjust accordingly--and on the portable a different control scheme would be used.

Nintendo president says "meh" to Xbox One, PS4 launch software
Reggie Fils-Aime says he feels "very good" about Wii U value proposition against Microsoft and Sony's upcoming systems because "it's all about the games."

My take: He's absolutely right.

All three of those games he mentions look really, really good. And the launch lineups for PS4 and XBONE are very "meh". In fact I would say this is probably the weakest launch lineup in recent memory.

Doesn't mean Nintendo isn't going to get creamed this holiday though. :/

Sure he's right that the launch isn't spectacular (I honestly think it's pretty good), but the WiiU's launch lineup was significantly "meh" too, and their entire year since has been just as bad.

Both MS and Sony are going to have a steady stream of quality games over the near year, and when we can finally compare each console at 1 year into its life cycle, it's going to be night and day between the Wii U and everything else.

If developers continue to completely ignore the Wii U the way they have been this past year, it won't matter how "meh" the PS4 or Ones line up looks.

The guy's right on the next gen launches being a bit weak in terms of exclusive games but multiplatform games are more than making up for that slack. Wii U still hasn't got a solid collection of games all this time after launch and although future exclusives may be great (& better than PS4 & XB1) the lack of multiplatform will mean hardcore gamers once more can't buy ONLY a Nintendo console & games for the generation. It never used to be like that for Nintendo.

50/50 on this. I think the PS4 launch line up is pretty boring on disc, but there's a lot of digital titles I'm excited about. The fact that, before the year is out, I'll have Planetside 2 and Resogun is exciting.

I'm expecting issues of low attention rate for the Xbone and PS4. People will buy the system but no games.

I'm also not expecting them to have anywhere near the hype of their predecessors, I think those days are over. There aren't any major hardware improvements, not just with graphics/performance but services they offer. I don't remember what PS2's online service was, but I don't think it was anything like PSN now (I think you had to buy some adapter anyway).

there was no unified infrastructure on the PS2. Any game that utilized online play had its own registration and sign on

Maybe my memory isn't that clear but I remember the 360 not being too hyped around where I live while the PS3 hype had been huge until the price announcement and the 3 month European delay killed most of that off. Even without killer games PS4 & XB1 are doing very well in preorders and most people I know who are into games plan on getting one within the next year or 2. I think the excitement wil be really high when true next gen games start coming out and the only limiting factor will be if the economy still hasn't recovered.

The hype of both previous gen systems seemed to come when they got going unlike now where most people want one but might not be able to afford it at launch. Game attachment might be low at first sure but apart from cost relative to buying power in a damaged economy, I see no other reason why it would be a lower attachment rate than the early days of the previous consoles.

That's not the case with the current gen and that won't be the case next gen either. Maybe it doesn't take off as fast and the ps3/360 did, but the attach rate will be similar to this gen. There's no evidence to support otherwise and preorders for the consoles and games for the new consoles have been really good.

Agree, people are ready for next gen. I think the "oh people don't want this" days are over. Preorder numbers for both games and systems prove this.

Preorders were always going to sell out. There shouldn't be any debate about that.

True, MS and Sony deliberately undercut their production to give off the perception of high demand.

LMAO, the PS3 didnt take off fast. I see the PS4 already having a much better start than its predecessor

Haha i know, im saying this gen may be slower than last gen(altho early numbers seem to dispute that). But yea, ur right, Sony couldnt of had a worse start.

In regardsto preorders.. Sony was pretty damn ggenerous. They opened them back up several times. I also blame Sony's ps3 struggles on Ken Kutaragi.

Just finished Space Marine for the first time. What a great (and tremendously underrated) game. It's definitely in the running for my favorite third-person shooter ever. The last third to last half of it is just incredible. It's really sad there most likely won't be a sequel.
