Not really. It was a throw away comment in an article about cavill exiting the superman role.

Race aside, I always had an issue with the fact that Superman looked human to begin with and that was rarely dealt with.

Part of me always wanted to see Kryptonians looking more traditionally alien and the ship like, terraforming him to make him look more like those he is to live among.

Someone (I think in this very thread) made a very good point that I hadn’t previously considered: what if they want MBJ for their DC Black label? Instead of trying to make him Clark Kent, what if they’re aiming to adapt the story of Calvin Ellis? I’d be interested in that. I wouldn’t want that in lieu of a proper Superman film (which can still star a black actor, I don’t really care), but it’s something to consider.

****, if they want to be really ambitious (which I doubt), they Grant Morrison the whole thing and build up to a “Supermen of the Multiverse” film. But I don’t think that’ll happen within our lifetimes.

Why is this being debated? I've been saying this on twitter:
SUPERMAN IS A WHITE GUY! DO NOT CAST MICHAEL B JORDAN BECAUSE "HE'S GOOD BOYZ!" HIRE CAVIL BACK NOW!

Is the world gone insane that no one is saying the same thing?!

I really hate WB now. I'm on the bandwagon that DC should be owned by someone else. Hollywood studios are money people, not idea people. WB is a prime example. Actually, every other film from WB has been great, but DC films, why do they keep screwing this up?!

I don't think the Calvin Ellis thing would work, not for a blockbuster, at any rate. I think Superman being Clark Kent is too cemented in pop culture. For my part, I'd have to pass.

Superman is an alien, the concept of race and "white guy" doesn't exist among Kryptonians. Clark's skin complexion is irrelevant to him and the story of Superman. As for DC being owned by someone else, give it 10 years or so and Disney will purchase it.

Will Smith as both Superman and Cap at the same time lol.

Maybe. I think this is one of those "You have to get the character right on film before you starting doing Elseworlds" things.

With JOKER, it's a bit different. The character has arguably been done well on film fairly recently (TDK) and they're branching out a bit. Superman hasn't been "right" on film for three decades if you listen to the media and half the fanbase.

I mean, I don’t disagree. It’s just an idea. I doubt they’d go in that direction anyway.

If this goes ahead then **** YOU DC. Im a brother from the UK and i DESPISE this rumour. I want my superman white so sick of this PC bull****. Can you imagine if they turned Blade white there wouldn't be an up roar. Do they think people of minority identify better with heroes that have been race changed or something. "Oh a black Superman, I can identify with him so much more now " :whatever: No Hollywood just no. Just because its the 21st century you want to show that everyone fits inside the same bubble. Race baiting people and fans alike. Stay in your ****ing lane DC the world has not progressed . Humans have not progressed . Race related tensions are at its highest and you want to throw this spanner in the works ive had enough of your stupid decisions and bull****. All this does is put heat on us black folks its all a damn agenda :wall:

Yikes....

This is must frustrating reasoning I hear about this idea. What people are overlooking is something very simple. Superman looks how Superman looks. The reason why Will Smith turned down the offer years ago was because he knew it wasn’t right to depict Superman in a way that didn’t adhere to what the character looked like. People are forgetting that how Superman looks is part of who he is, and when you start to remove that he no longer is Superman. This is why the MBJ thing is nensense.

Dude, Superman being black changes EVERYTHING! Superman is WHITE and needs to stay WHITE. End of story,. You guys need to stop considering and start fighting this and get Cavil back by any means.

Kryptonitans aren't white, black, Asian, red, green, purple or any race. You saying "End of Story" means nothing as you have no control over this situation. Superman can be played by an actor of any race, as race doesn't matter when dealing with kryptonitans because they are another ****in species.

The fact that you think Superman being played by a black actor changes " EVERYTHING! " says a lot about you as a person.

Actually, it's not an illogical argument. Superman being a different ethnicity means him potentially having the deal with issues that he wouldn't have to under normal circumstance, especially in small town like where he grew up. That potentially changes things enough to where it no longer remains true to who the character is, in which case you're better off just creating an new character. The reality is Clark skin colour is what it is and is part of how he looks visually.

Agreed. Superman is white.

Rightttt . What a crock of **** . So black panther. Blade, Luke cage can be played by any race of actor . How about Ryan gosling for BP that should make the P.C brigade happy. You will not get a character with that much status being race changed just like the talk of Edris Elba being cast as 007. You think the general public are ready for such a change. Its people like you who think everyone can just sit back and accept change as it is without any repercussions. If you feel a race of people will be liberated from turning a high status fictional character Black/Chinese/Indian then this SJW/snowflake society is ****ed.

lol Black Panther is the king of an ancient African nation, Luke Cage is a guy from Harlem who was falsely imprisoned as a result of institutional racism, being black is crucial to their character, it makes them who they are. Superman is a member of another species, being an alien from Krypton is crucial to his character, not the complexion of the outer layer of his skin. In line with that, Bruce Wayne being white is crucial to his character, as he is the last scion of a founding family of a major American city, and as a result needs to be white, same with Cap, Wolverine, Tony Stark, and a bazzillion other white superheroes who need to be white to be who they are.

So...if a version of Superman has to deal with new or socially relevant conflicts...he’s somehow not Superman anymore, even if he retains many of his core characteristics, like optimism, being an inspirational leader, etc?

The character has faced hatred over being an alien...making race allegorical to that could be an interesting approach.

I don’t think the safe play is to go right to that before they “get the character right”, but there’s potential there.

Superman could technically wear a purple and yellow suit. I don't really want him to, though. He could technically be black, but I prefer white. The story implications don't even really enter my mind.
