The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

I don't understand the feeling to scrap everything that came before in the Snyder build up.
I can understand some not liking Cavill. Fine. But If they continue with Cavill and a new director and tone it should work. It is not fair to say Cavill is a bad actor. He has done good work.
The Tudors, Superman, Man from Uncle, Mission Impossible. The Witcher. He IS an A lister, like it or not. He IS popular and well liked. He is a better actor than Affleck IMO who is ok but no Denzel.
; )

He needs a great script for Superman and it will be a hit.

Advantage is at the end of ZSJL he IS the classic SUPERMAN. Ready to move forward.
Continuing the story would be no different from the animated versions with Darkseid. We don't need Superman to go full evil rampage but can be twisted "briefly" by Darkseid as eluded to in ZSJL.

ZSJL was a big hit for HBOmax. Lots of interest. No harm following this up with fresh direction if needed. I personally don't need to see a Superman saving cats and having mundane conversations and doing menial things. S&L is for that. Big films need big stakes and consequences.

Frankly I'd like to see a Team up direction. Snyder doing the visuals and another director doing the story telling. Never happen but it would be the best of all worlds.

They need a director that can do similar visuals and still tell a compelling story.

I mean I guess it depends what they're going to do with the reboot. You could still reboot Superman without getting a young guy. Have it set where he is already an established Superman. I'm tired of origin tales. Superman 78, Smallville, Man of Steel, and heck, even Superman & Lois did it wonderfully. I'm okay with jumping in to Superman knowing who he is and what he stands for. I'd definitely be okay with Cavill playing that, just have him be optimistic and more traditional Superman. The world needs that bright light that Superman can be now more than ever...
I'd like to see it open in a comic book format. Each page turns with a voiceover.

Page 1-3. krypton.
We see jor-el warning the ruling council about the impending destruction. Brainiac is the world's AI.
It assures the council everything is fine
We see a small Ship escape as Krypton explodes.

Page 4 5. Smallville.
We see the ship crash.
The kents finding him.
we see Clark learning how to use his powers from a young child to a teenager.

Page 6-7. College
We see panels of Clark making some saves in secret.
He gets a crush on Lana. He Plays football but holds back.

8-9. The FOS.
We see panels showing him traveling the world. He builds the fos in south America from a crystal from the ship.
He's in a jungle region.
We see him in the FoS. he gets the suit.
We see the \S/ in the last panel as he flies off.

Page 10-13. Metropolis....
We see Lex, metallo, parasite, bizarro in various fight scenes with superman.
superman is victorious in each panel.

Page 14. The DP
It starts as comic panels, but slowly transitions into live action.
we see the DP and its controlled chaos.
clark kent is sitting at his desk.
The camera zooms in as he hears terrified screams.. he lowers his glasses and peers off into the distance.

100% would love this honestly. Get Alex Ross to draw it too. I loved his opening credits with Spider-Man 2. Or do you mean still have it in comic panels, but still in live action format? Either way, I dig it.

Opening credits would all be in comic book format. His history from Krypton until the present.
Once it hits the present, it transitions to a normal live action film.

I think this is a case where no news is better than bad news. And, unfortunate as it is to say, Cavill’s return would’ve fallen into the latter category for me. I would’ve been happy for him and would’ve tried to make the best of it (a better choice of director to pair him with would’ve gone a long way), but I think there’s a great deal about the Snyder era that needs to be washed away for us to really move forward, and I wish that was something the studio could’ve figured out before bringing Ezra back for another go-round.

I think The Batman has shown the way. Aping the MCU won’t work out, at least not 100%. They’ve been at this for too long, we’ll never be able to match what they’re doing over there. Just let the franchises work on an individual basis, and then if they’re firing on all cylinders, then maybe consider a crossover. But just make sure they work first.

It's sad to think that the last time Superman was promoted at a Comic Con event was 6-7 years ago. Frankly, I feel like world peace would be easier to achieve than seeing Warner Bros get their act together and create a great Superman film franchise.

Alright, let’s not get melodramatic and just keep in mind that there was an almost 20-year gap between movies in this franchise at one point.

Totally agree.
I think a clean slate truly is the best way to move forward.

I understand people's attachment to Cavill's Superman and the Snyderverse, but at this point, it's about what's best for the Superman film brand going forward ,as opposed to attempting to right a decade worth of wrongs for a particular version.

They could always attempt to try to salvage a story from the MOS, BvS, and JL films and drama, but just because you could try to salvage a story doesn't always mean you should try to move forward in that continuity.

There really are many more storytelling opportunities starting fresh.

Superman has thrived on TV during the movie hiatus though. Lois & Clark, Smallville, Superman & Lois.

That said, this next Superman has to be something truly special...

Yeah, I’m not starved for good Supes content - the comics are GREAT right now, I love Superman & Lois, and we’re getting a new animated series next year - like I was a few years ago, so I’m perfectly happy to sit back, let them take their time to start fresh and get it right this time. I feel relatively well-fed as a Supes fan at the moment, tbh.

Is that animated series still happening? I haven't heard anything about it in a hot minute.

Yeah it was always slated for 2023. They’ve released some art and the voice cast so far, but that’s about it.

True, I had almost forgotten about that 20-year gap of development hell. Like others have said, I'm glad that we at least have S&L on TV right now.

I still wish Warner Bros would get their act together and give fans the Superman film that most of us have been waiting for since S:TM.

So, smoke but no fire, that is very good news. I don't have a problem with Cavill as a second banana in any one else's movies, but not as the lead in a new Superman movie. Cavill seems to be decent human, just a bad Superman.

One has to wonder where the rumor came from, but this is very good news, as no news is good news. Though I find it interesting that the rumor came from "Deadline" which I always thought was a fairly decent and respected company, not one of those irregular internet sites. Either a big mistake, or bad timing. SDCC is the biggest fan event of the year, seems strange for DC to get hoodwinked by a false rumor, if it was one.

I do wonder what is going on behind the scenes, with the MBJ Superman show, and any new Superman movie news. A Rumor, A Rumor, My Kingdom for a Rumor!!!

Sticking with the Snyder verse just feels like fox using Bryan Singer X-Men universe and trying to make it work. Time to move on imo.

Fresh start is really the only way I'm going to care, I am bored of these faces and aesthetics which will be 10 years old soon.

Batman keeps proving to be an evergreen and they had Matt Reeves to class up the prospect of a new movie... with Superman, I think right now they figure the fandom is too hostile and Cavill hype is the one thing they can rely on for good publicity.

Batman fandom is also split between Snyder's and the still recent Nolan films, which gives perspective and makes people more tolerant to another new version. All poor Superman's really got is Snyder stuff and the big vacuum prior to that.

Are we ignoring Austin Butler? I’m sure he’ll be/is already on WB’s radar:

Wouldn’t be my first choice, personally. But maybe.

I don't think he's right for the role. Nightwing, sure. Human torch, sure. Superman, I don't think so imo.

After all this time I'm still not sure I'm sold on Keke as an actress. She has the right energy, spunk, and fire that Lois requires though.
