The Good Citizens of Metropolis: The Casting Thread

You literally almost brought tears to my eyes with this post especially because of coronavirus and then the DCEU but also the world needs hope again and a Superman film can do that

Yeah.

I recently said on social media how the article Lois is writing at the end of Superman Returns “Why the World Needs Superman” feels more relevant than ever

This is to accompany the fan cast I created for Matt Reeves' Batman franchise linked here:

I'm still holding out for James Mangold in the director's chair. I know his joining Indiana Jones 5 may put a question mark on his more immediate availability, but that movie has been in development forever--Hollywood's shutdown due to the virus may the sequel's final nail in the coffin.

That’s a really good cast flickchick! It’s a shame you didn’t use the photo of Tom cruise from Tropic Thunder, that’s like the perfect Lex Luther inspo there haha

Ha! Love Tom Cruise, but he’s still my Hal Jordan until WB tells me otherwise.

Rachel Brosnahan would be an excellent Lois. Tbh my fan-cast tends to rotate between her, Margaret Qualley, and Emma Stone.

You know who would be an amazing Lois Lane? Lana Condor. Especially next to David Corenswet.

I wonder how you adapt Lex Luther these days as a villain? Like I feel like too many people would be like “oh he drowned half the city but he would still make a great leader!”

I guess that’s one of the angles that might make superman relatable again. When he realises he can’t save people from their own bad decisions. Mostly.

Maybe he violates LexCorp workers rights. idk, out of all of DC's villain I'd think Lex is the most relevant for today's day and age.

Yeah but I mean, if he does that people would be like “wow what a clever businessman”. It’s just funny how people seem to justify people like Lex all the time now no matter how nefarious they are

Just imagine if Trump were actually an eloquent genius.

Emmy Rossum has been a fav choice of mine for a while, strong, attractive, great actor above all else.

For me, I have said before, I like Lois being older but I also like Lois to be kinda quirky, in the fact that she is in love with an alien. Not the shape of water type quirky, but just enough to realize she is in love and mates with an alien. That's never really been addressed, it's not political or needs to be a big thing, but I kinda want it mentioned.

Just imagine if Trump were actually an eloquent genius.
The bloke is a genius, just not in the standard way. He is the POTUS, don't get more powerful than that and he got the votes in.

However, how would trump handle the relation of a man the can fly, have super strength and be invincible?

"I knew him well, we are friends, very good friends. Such tremendous strength, American strength. So proud to have him here - like I said, we need more people like me, more super men! He's a super man! You know... he can just walk right over to Russia, he can see past the NK lines - he can also see my daughters lovely lingerie but there we go - we're lucky, he's a super guy."

As others have said, businessmen appear one way and many ways to the public, but behind closed doors, could be totally different.

Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Elon Musk, even Sanders could all be how a modern day lex could be presented.

Have Russell Crowe shave his head and be corrupt Trump politician Charles Foster Kane Luthor. Jor-El who?

But my preferred take is Saleria with muscles and millions. Someone who's reached the pinnacle of human perfection, until Superman came along. Grant Morrison Lex. Matt Damon is my favorite for that. Back to Talented Mr Ripley, Departed ****bag Damon mode.

I like that idea too, that lex considers himself 'super man'. He's basically the Bruce Wayne of America. Strong, handsome, smart, a fine run every pie - trouble is, where as Bruce is tormented by his parents murder and wants to avenge them, Lex is bored and see's himself as above and beyond everyone, it corrupts him. The city have a love hate relationship with Lex, they need him, he builds hospitals and infrastructure and raises money, but he's a bit of a dick. He is a bit shady that people try and expose but end up fish food, the media no longer touch him and he prides as the golden boy. Then, Ka El appears and the DP covers the story and have a head line 'the real superman of metropolis' and an image of him saving the day.

It boils lex's piss.

That's why I want Tom Cruise. Xenu-powered Lex. Dude is every bit the charismatic leading man, who seems like a superhero with the stuff he does on screen, but underneath the surface? Pools of crazy.

And what I meant by my Trump comparison is that he tapped into the underlying paranoia, bigotry and xenophobia that had been bubbling in the back of the minds of a good portion of the nation for quite some time, and brought it to the forefront, making himself into the champion of the "real Americans."

She's like 4 years younger than him.

I think, to me, for me, don't try to paint him as a direct analogue. To me, Lex is a character his own. Direct analogues aren't needed. Movies have had businessmen as villains a long time.

I don't think that Superman should be depicted as needing to save people from their own decisions. This is something I don't like. He's just a guy. I like the casualness of Clark as a person in some versions. I think it's among the reasons why I like the version in Lois & Clark: TNAOS. And I think a lack of that, to me, is among the reasons, though much lower on the totem to Snyder's perception, why I don't particularly like what I've seen of DCEU's for the most part.

I keep coming back to Brad Pitt as Pa Kent. We're at the very least 3 years away from a reboot, giving him time to age into the role more. He's not Redford, but he's pretty close.

Brad Pitt would need to be aged and roughed up...

As Perry White, sure.

56... looks about 46... that's the difference. I think he is too well known as a celeb, like he would really need to go natural and give an understated performance.

Make Lex the President, IMMEDIATELY, in a rebooted Superman. Lex is done being just an industrialist with a grudge against an alien.

And what's your reasoning for this?

Brad Pitt as Jonathan Pa Kent...I can actually get behind that I mean Brad definitely looks good for a man who is almost 60 or he's getting there he's 56 turning 57 so realistically he is a good fit for the role but for Ma Kent well Martha Kent would definitely still go with Julianne Moore
