Justice League The Hal Jordan/Green Lantern Thread - Part 1

I don’t know about that, being an American Marine is an important element of his character, one that informs a lot of his personality to take that away would take away much of what makes John, John. Also, making the black GL from Africa is a dubious choice.

Yeah, John is an American military man. Change any of that and you're changing the character.

Beat me to it; and agreed with both points.

At the end of the day, more than likely they're gonna just make'em all (IF they end up showing up) "american born" and we'll just have to rub it off as "movie coincidence" type of thing, but it's be cool if they think about it and actually give them different nationalities without changing the parts of their respective personal histories that are relevant to their character traits (I've suggested on the past to make Guy Irish/Scottish, and while a poster - I can't remember who - agreed that it would be hilarious, it would also take away the "big, dumb american jock" part of the character that is integral to him).

But... Wasn't John's military background a retcon in the first place and one only made popular by the JL/JLU series? Which, fine, just things get added to characters all the time that eventually people think are "essential" parts of said characters yet actually accrued over time and might not actually be essential if the next version that has changes suddenly attains some kind of resonance with the audience. I mean... Look at the "organic vs mechanical" debate in the world of Spidey fans. The Raimi films reached a critical mass to the point that Marvel adapted the idea to the character's home media of comics and for some that is the definitive version of Spidey, even though in the long run it's just a handful of years in the characters long existence.

For myself, I am more open to John's background being changed simply because when I first knew the character I don't remember a single thing about him being a Marine ever being mentioned or put to the forefront. I always knew John as an architect that Hal recruited as his back up.

Since it's been changed once already...

All that said, my druthers would be to keep John as an American and frankly the version on JLU was a good version and seeing that adapted would be something I am fine with.

But Guy IS Irish-American. He is from Baltimore but he has Irish roots.

When I think about it, every single GL is *something*-American. Hal is Jewish-American, Guy is Irish-American, John is African-American, Simon is Lebanese-American, Kyle and Jessica are Mexican-American. I think only Alan Scott is just "American". lol

When did Hal Jordan become Jewish? Wasn't he and his brothers based on the Kennedy's? Hal's mom was Jewish though I don't recall her being portrayed (which let's be honest, was not often) as being observant or anything. I know his father was Irish Catholic.

In any case... I don't think Hal Jordan ever really comes off as "Jewish-American".

I haven't been a regular comics consumer since 2008, so I am out of the loop on these things. Still... A Jewish Hal Jordan? Sounds like a stretch.

It hasn't been really accentuated on, but it's been around for a long time.

Some of his religious views get a bit more emphasis in the Darkseid War Green Lantern special from a few years back.

I actually own that issue, a DC Comics Christmas special from the early 90's. And I always took it as Hal telling Barry Happy Channukah because Barry was Jewish or had Jewish roots. I mean... Which guy's name sounds more Jewish? Harold "Hal" Jordan or Bartholomew "Barry" Allen?

lol Good point, but Hal's the one who's been established as Jewish, it's just not an integral part of his character since he's not a practicing Jew. Still, check out the Darkseid War GL special by Tom King and Doc Shaner.

You know what? The next time they want to make a new Green Lantern, they should be a Sikh-American. When asked why he accepted the offer to join the Corps, he says "I have a religious obligation to protect others and see justice be done."

I might be wrong but isn't there a Sikh blue lantern?

I hope we get to see all the main Lanterns at some point.

Green Lantern: Earth One is coming out next year http://thr.cm/6ZWUri

Ahead of the character's eventual cinematic debut, DC Entertainment has announced a new graphic novel that will give Green Lantern a contemporary make-over and re-imagine his comic book origins.
Next year's Green Lantern: Earth One will reposition Hal Jordan as an astronaut and scientist rather than an Earth-bound test pilot, with him discovering the Green Lantern ring by accident on an asteroid — launching him into an adventure beyond his wildest imagining.
The title will be created by Corinna Bechko and Gabriel Hardman, with colors by Jordan Boyd and lettering by Simon Bowland, the complete creative team behind the critically acclaimed Image Comics series Invisible Republic. Bechko and Hardman have previously collaborated on projects for Marvel and Dark Horse, including a fan-favorite run on Star Wars: Legacy.
"Approaching this as an Earth One story gives us the opportunity to go back to the core concept of Green Lantern and interpret it through the lens of a modern, grounded sci-fi story while still being true to the Silver Age roots of Hal Jordan," Hardman said in a statement to IGN. “Having storyboarded Interstellar, this is an approach I’m comfortable with and have wanted to explore in comics. Realistic sci-fi is only the beginning of this story; we have something much more epic in store."
The title continues DC's Earth One line of original graphic novels, which launched with the first volume of Superman: Earth One in 2010. Since then, the series — which is dedicated to new, outside-of-regular-canon, revisions of core DC properties — has featured new versions of Batman, Wonder Woman and the Teen Titans.

Green Lantern: Earth One Vol. 1 will be released March 20, 2018.

That's fine for the E1 series but... Pass on using that in the movies.

Man of Steel used some E1 elements, maybe this can do the same. I would be interested to see Hal as an astronaut. He could've still started as a test pilot, but moved on to something that could bring him "closer to the stars" as he calls it.

I don't mind Hal being an astronaut but the whole point is that the ring CHOSE him. He didn't stumble into it through dumb luck like Kyle.

Also... The GLC being destroyed part has zero appeal to me. I hate when they have done that in the comics and I don't think it's a good thing to go that route in the movies.

Rather the GLC still be around in the films, just because that's some epic world building. But whatever makes for a great story, I'm down for. Would love for the astronaut Hal thing though. Feel like they could tie that into the larger narrative really well. Maybe he gets stuck on some planet and there's a scene of him hiding from Zod and his crew when they were searching for other habitable planets in MoS.

Eh, that's hardly the point of the GL property. Most of what we consider the "main" lore is revisionist of the Golden Age era.

I'm all for reinventing the series once more. I'd love a hard sci-fi take on it. It may be just what the live-action series needs to be taken seriously.

The more I think about him being an astronaut the more I love it. :funny:
I wouldn't mind If the movie was influenced by that
