The Dark Knight The James Gordon / Gary Oldman Thread

The scene when he points the gun at Batman and screams about how he needs to save Harvey at the end was one of my favorites. Gary Oldman did a great job and I'll really look forward to seeing him again if they make a third movie!

I loved that scene as well, when Gordon says he needs to save Harvey, because you can tell he feels responsible in a big way...

Even though I kinda knew that Gordon had more scenes later in the movie, the death scenes still worked for me and for a while, I really thought that it was over for him...The midnight crowd went nuts when he came back.

I thought Gary Oldman was just fantastic, especially in that final scene when Two Face pointed the gun at his son and he snapped. You could see the tears running down his face. That was such an emotional scene they all did a fantastic job.

I was really pissed when I thought Jim was dead and then I remembered that there was supposed to be the scene of him and Joker in the interrogation room so I felt better and then thought it was even cooler when they revealed who he was in that scene.

People were fooled by his "death"?

I knew he wasn't dead simply because he hadn't made the rank of "commisioner" yet. Until that day came, I pretty much knew that he had to be alive. It's kind of like in Star Wars Prequels where you know that no matter what happens, Obiwan, Yoda, and Anakin are going to surive because they haven't done what we know they are meant to do yet.

If you're not familiar with the character then i can see how you would be fooled. But otherwise...

Let me just say Oldman is really underrated in this movie. I think the story belonged to him and Dent as much as it did to batman and Joker. The last scenes with his work trying to talk Harvey down and final speech is very moving.

mmm..not quiet true. I know these characters/universe inside and out and I pretty much stayed away from any and all spoilers for this flick but I did know Jim would make Commish and that Loebs funeral would be a scene however (and I don't know if anyone would agree but) while watching this it had a sense that ANYTHING could happen and no one was safe so when Gordon was pronounced dead I was like "wow!! wtf?!?" and both angry they would do that but amazed they had the balls to carry it out and then when he came back I was all "F yeah that was an AMAZING twist!!"

As for Oldmans performance :astounding.

Im so glad that he got to actually play Jim Gordon and not comic relief like in BB.

I just wanted to say that Gary Oldman is fantastic in this movie! (He was great in BB too!)
The scene with Batman and SWAT on the rooftop at the end screaming "Dent's in there! We have to save Dent! I have to save Dent!" And pulling a gun on Batman? Oldman's Gordon doesn't take crap from anyone! Then the scene with his family and Two-Face...wow! Just wow.

He is an incredible actor! :applaud

I must say
When he made his return it got such a big reaction from the crowd. I work at a movie theater and it was a packed house today, and I kid you not, when Gordon made his return there was a lady who let out an excited gasp and started clapping. Her reaction generated the same response from the crowd as well.

People were screaming and clapping in all of the viewings that I've seen. That is definately another great moment!

*points gun at Batman* "We have clear shots! We have to save Dent! *Batman theme breaks loose* I have to save Dent!" *Batman jumps off ledge*

That moment always gives me chills. In Batman 3 they need to have a scene where Gordon is forced to put on a scene in front of a few other cops where he has to pull out his gun at Batman.

I honestly say this, as good as Joker was, Jim Gordon is my favorite Batman character! (in The Dark Knight anyway... In Batman Begins it's Batman).

For those of you that have been following the physical progression of age through Batman Begins and TDK, you could probably deduce that Jim Gordon would probably have to be at LEAST in his late 50's in TDK. Isn't kinda weird how his kids are so young? His son looked 8-9 and his daughter around the same age.

I know for storytelling purposes, the kid's age probably worked out better for the movie's dramatic ending, but it's still a little weird, don't you think?

I don't think it's weird: my father was 42 when I was born... He's 58 now. I'm 16. When I was 9 years old he was 49. :oldrazz:

Some people just have children later, my parents weren't able to have children until just suddenly it happened... weird, huh?

I wouldn't consider it to be weird. (Especially now, since people are having kids later and later.)

Well, my dad was 48 when I was born. It's not weird to me, just out of the ordinary, but that's besides the point.

Gordon isn't in his fifties. I'd peg him in his early to mid-forties at the most. During the "Begins" flashback where the Waynes are killed, I always figured Gordon was supposed to be just a rookie cop in his twenties even though he was still portrayed by Gary Oldman.

Then about twenty years had passed from the time Bruce's parents were killed and the time he returned to Gotham. By then Gordon was a seasoned veteran and a sergeant. Of course, during the progression of events during the next year (I think a year passed between the events of BB and TDK) Gordon would be promoted to Lieutenant and finally, Commissioner.

As for the "Begins" flashback, I'm guessing that Nolan didn't want to cast a younger actor to portray the younger Gordon in order to familiarize people with the character.

How come Gordon can't be in his fifties if Gary Oldman himself is 50 now?

and sure, something "weird" IS synonymous with "out-of-the-ordinary". Of course, this was where I was assuming that Gordon was supposed to be in his fifties in TDK, since I still can't "buy into" Gordon supposedly being younger than 30 in the BB flashback.

I think he was supposed to be 32 in the flashback, which would make Gordon around 55 in TDK, which I thought "looked" right for him.

who says gordon has to be in his 50's?

He looks mid forties at best

This is all just going back to his flashback appearance in BB, where I could buy into him looking younger, but not a twentysomething. The youngest age I could buy into him being is 28, but then he'd still be 50-52 in TDK.

Then again, BB is the same movie that has 31 year old christian bale playing bruce wayne at college age...

i just suspend disbelief, as young gordon's more of an easter egg...imo, i wouldnt think about it too much

So a guy can't have eight and nine year old kids if he's in his 50's? What?

I think Oldman did a great job as Gordon...I thought he was a tad bit wasted in Begins, glad he had a substantial role this time around...

...Regarding his age...It doesn't really matter how old he is does it...I think TNC...Might be about right, maybe a tad bit younger...

And anyone else think that there were continuity problems with Gordon's hair colour...At times it was more brownish...At times it was more grayish...Possibly just the lighting?

In those scenes, Bruce was 22 and the gap between Bale's real age wasn't very big, so he really did look 22 to me.

I'm just saying it's a lot harder for me to believe a 47 year old man trying to look 24. :p I COULD believe him to look 30-32 in that scene, though. Hence, the fifties. It's not a big deal...I was just wondering if anyone else was looking at this situation.
