The Joker Thread - Part 1

The problem with Jared Leto’s Joker is that he’s a bad actor with poor instincts.

Nah, Dallas Buyers’ Club alone makes him a great actor. Idc what anyone says. He could **** the bed for the rest of his career and I’ll refer to him as great bc of that.

Leto's been fine to good in pretty much everything he's done except Suicide Squad, and the mixed opinions people have of him in Blade Runner 2049.

Agreed. Although I never had a problem with him as an actor until his last couple roles.

How would you guys feel about Joker starting off as leader of the Red Hood Gang, bleached skin and all?

It could work. Although if they were gonna go the Red Hood route, I'd kind of prefer them to do the full classic origin story with Ace Chemicals and the bleaching.

Leto's Dallas Buyers Club performance as a performance isn't terrible or offensive, he just... Shouldn't be playing a transwoman on principle. Obviously they don't speak for everyone (and are likely a minority) but I actually do have trans friends who liked his performance in and of itself.

I reject that argument, personally. Actors should be able to play whatever they're convincing as. If you start placing restrictions and saying actors can't play stuff that they're not in reality, you're diluting the purpose of acting.
I don't disagree in theory but I do think if a community almost universally finds it blackface level offensive you might wanna not.

Eh....it doesn't bother me when straight actors play gay characters, and by that same logic you could argue gay actors shouldn't play straight characters either.
In theory, yes, but our side of the community clearly isn't bothered by it. Not a one-to-one comparison.

I don't want to get bogged down in the political implications of it all (1. because this isn't that kind of subforum, and 2. because life is only so long), but I'll just say I thought he gave a very skilled and worthy performance in Dallas Buyer's Club.

Eh, it varies. I know some gay people who don't like when gay characters are portrayed by straight actors. My college theater professor advocates for gay roles to be played exclusively by gay actors.

As I said, I don't agree with him on that, at least not that strictly.

Part of it is timing, the idea that cis actors probably shouldn't be playing trans people was certainly around when Dallas Buyers Club came out but it wasn't as solidified, but on a performance level I've actually heard Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl get infinitely more ****.

That's fair; I just think that's a very cool image and it would be interesting if they went that route, having him evolve somewhat.
